Lawrence Kasdan’s Robotech?

According to CHUD’s sources, screenwriting legend Lawrence Kasdan is writing the big screen live-action adaptation of Robotech. For those of you who don’t know, Kasdan is the guy who wrote Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark. What we do know for sure, Warner Bros and Maguire Entertainment are developing the project as a starring vehicle for Tobey Maguire. When the project was first announced back in September, Craig Zahler, a virtual unknown, was attached to pen the screenplay. Kasdan is an epic screenwriter for this epic sci-fi adaptation.

Robotech refers to the scientific advances discovered in an alien starship that crashed on a South Pacific island. With this technology, Earth developed giant robotic machines or mecha (many of which were capable of transforming into vehicles) to fight three successive extraterrestrial invasions. At the time of its broadcast, Harmony Gold also launched Robotech through a popular line of comics to be followed by novels, role-playing games, video games, comic books, toys, and other consumer products.

I like that Lawrence Kasdan is writing it. I don't like that crybaby Tobey will be in the lead. But I'm leaving this up to Kasdan to do an amazing job on this great universe.

And to really make it an "epic".
  • GregoryV
all i know, im going ape shit with this new development.
  • Captain Awesome
I'm with Gregory. I really hope this has a budget that will really bring the style and designs found in this franchise.

I want amazing dogfights against alien ships. I also hope to see a cameo by the Cyclones :)
  • GregoryV
tobey is doing it right with kasdan. thank goodness!

i cant wait to see the final scene with veritechs swarming around the SDF-1 space fighting above the earth.

honestly, i cant think of one actor to play rick hunter. i mean, rick hunter is kinda of a nerd...nerd air circus performer turned zentradi ass kicker. maybe Emile Hirsch or Joseph Gordon-Levitt?
  • Captain Awesome
What about Skull Leader? I think Guy Pearce would be perfect for the role

    :D

I hope this is good. Yo Peter, I recommend you check out Macross Plus anime movies. Trust me , they'll blow your mind.
  • Phred
I hope they get Jerri Ryan to play Miriya if she's included in the movie.
  • Chokinzoku
If this ever gets made, it won't feature the original Macross cast that many fans are hoping it will. This film will likely feature characters from Mospeada and Shadow Chronicles...which means you get Scott Bernard and Alpha fighters not Rick Hunter and Valkyries (Veritechs)....remember--Warners has a deal with Harmony Gold--not with Big West.
  • GregoryV
i dont dont think the harmony gold and big west would have a problem.

since robotech is an entirely different series than macross, im sure they could pull if off as long its not using macross property. it can only be made it its in the context of the robotech series. big west doesnt own robotech and the rick hunter character, they own hikaru.

knowing warner brothers, theyll probably twist it with differnet planes and different transformations. WB will probably screw everything and call the main character MICK PUNTER.

honestly, i really dont know all these legal mumbo jumbo, as long theyre making the damn movie. lol.

Excellent choice for the screenplay, but right now I am conspiring
with a couple of friends to make a sacrifice to the movies gods
in effort to keep Toby from taking on the role of Rick Hunter.

As long as Kasdan isn't pegged to DIRECT, this is good news. lol

I love Kasdan having written Raiders and Empire and one of my all time favorites...The Big Chill. Where has he been????
Looking forward to this even though I never watched the cartoon.

this would be the greatest thing ever done if done right i just hope they dont try to cram one saga into a movie i think this could go for a six part movie series with 2 telling the story of a saga.

this deserves something like the lord of the rings treatment because to me its epicdom exceeds even that of TLOTR
  • Rena
    Tobey Mcguire? Really?
  • Captain Awesome
    razor1000,

I'd be happy with a solid trilogy. I don't want 6 films to be honest. They could span the original Harmony Gold saga through 3 films I think. I mean if they were able to do LOTR in 3 films really well. Then this can be done.

But it also comes downt o who ends up being director for this project. And that's what worries me the most.

    OMG This is like woah...
  • TopGunMacross
Aah... to see the F-14 on the big screen again... I mean VF1... :P
  • Maikan
Another movie website has gotten its hands on WB's Robotech script and may post a review this week...a little birdy told me.
  • Jenbot
    OH WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!!?
    Im totally screwed!
    hahaha
oh well I hope someone makes it better than I would have
  • dbunker
Tobey Mcguire being in it will be enough to make it like Spiderman (which is not a compliment)

I am excited about Robotech but only if they do it right. They need to stick with the Macross version as it has the coolest machines and story lines. The Robotech Masters story arc is stupid and the Invid is ok. I think if you use some of the technology from the other versions and stick with only Macross, that will be cool. The Shadow Chronicles as a start point will piss of the loyal Robotech fan base, and new Robotech fans will not understand the story from the end point. Robotech is about Rick Hunter so start from their. I think the first movie should involve the Zentradi the second the Invid and the third Shadow Chronicles. This franchise with a Blu-Ray extended cut like LOTR and you have a money making machine. 2010 is the year Robotech becomes an icon for another generation:)

I just only have something to say, I want a movie of Robotech very realistic, not a kiddy movie. See a realistic drama like Battlestar Galactica TV Series 2003. I hope the directors and producers may count with Robotech fans that are expecting the best from them. Also it is very important analize each detail like transformation from Varytech to Gearwalk mode and to Guardian mode in slow speed the public may appreciate that transformation. Oh my ! but don’t forget to place a panoramic sight of the inner city onboard of SDF-1. That should be expectacular view where you can see vehicles transit the highway ceiling like the anime movie.

unfortunately, the "robotech masters" is pivotal to the story arc. if you wish for macross portion alone, you will not get R-O-B-O-T-E-C-H; you get S-D-F:M-A-C-R-O-S-S!:) why would you waste money and energy reinventing the wheel? a live action adaptation WILL NOT make robotech any more real than its animation counterpart. the very sdf:macross, army of the southern cross, and genesis climber mospeada contain the qualities which may not necessarily be surpassed by a live motion picture. the underlying constituents(namely sdf:macross, army of the southern cross and genesis climber mospeada) which made up robotech are already equivalent to live tv drama simply because they deployed dramatization whilst carrying a serialized story unlike most western(especially american) animations of their time. unless the movie robotech presents a fresh story then there is nothing to be excited about. i suggest you spend your time on something more worthwhile. in my opinion, a robotech movie is a waste!:)

how much more realistic than the animation do you hope to be? battlestar galactica is NEVER realistic; it was dramatized to provide (occasionally) excessive dramatic effect ever! would you say that the characters and stories of the classic airwolf, streethawk, knight rider, 6 million dollar man, bionic woman and even the allegedly cheesy original galactica were not realistic? they were portrayed by real persons. and their cheesiness reflects the demeanour and attitude as well as courtesy of the society of the time. by comparison, today's society lacks courtesy and favourable/commendable behaviour; this is very shameful because it shows degradation/deculturisation of our civilisation! if you just wish for action packed plus romantic drama, the animated macross universe is plentiful of those!:)
