When all is said and done, will The Incredible Hulk take the spot on our Fave Movies of Summer ‘08 listicles previously reserved for Indy and Spielberg? For months, the redo’s marketing, CGI, behind the scenes differences, and purpose have been scrutinized beneath formidable anticipation for The Dark Knight, Iron Man and Hellboy 2. Early reviews are hitting the Net and it appears that the latest Marvel tale, from director Louis Leterrier and star Ed Norton, is a worthy contender and then some. I’ve compiled excerpts from what’s currently being said on the Net. If you’ve attended an early screening, let us hear all about it in the comments, or email/Twitter us. This entire post is spoiler-free.

First off, The Incredible Hulk recently screened at the championed Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, Texas and the locals and spies over at AICN report the following…

“I was afraid going into this movie that the CGI would take me out of the movie, but it never did. The cinematography and CGI were beautifully shot. I loved the Hulk as much in this movie as I did in the comic books. …Ed Norton was incredible as Bruce Banner. But the Hulk? The Hulk truly came to life for me for the first time on film. …Is it as wonderful as Iron Man? No, but it is still a pretty damn good superhero film that continues to give me hope for the future Marvel films in the works.” - CheriBomb

The following guy nitpicks at Liv Tyler’s performance (”she’s always out of breath…”), but he’s even more excited. Given his alias, I can only imagine where and in what circumstance he typed the following…

“Really, let’s not even worry about the thin plot, the point of anything Hulk is SMASH! …In short, the geekiest comparison I can make is to Star Trek:consider Ang Lee’s Hulk to be Star Trek:The Motion Picture, a long drawn out effects heavy cerebral film clearly crafted with a fetishistic love; and consider The Incredible Hulk to be The Wrath Of Khan:shorter, faster, pure ass kicking all the way through.” - The Human Burrito

Yes mom, I went to J-school to quote a spy named The Human Burrito. And if said spy is actually a plant dressed up like my favorite food, I have to say his Star Trek comparison still makes me want to check it out. Other spy reports: This next guy admits that the CGI Hulk is pretty, uh, CGI-y and yet the effects do not “distract” from the overall badassery. He also says that the film is chockful of Easter Eggs and gushing with geek references, something we keep hearing over and over…

“The real surprise for me was Tim Roth - he’s not been this good for years and he’s great as special forces soldier Emil Blonsky, even if his character does get lost a bit towards the end and he does look a bit like Harry Potter’s Dobby at one point. There’s one sequence in particular that has me drooling at the prospect of Marvel’s upcoming Captain America movie.” - rjl1138, NYC

Yeah, but what about Professor Dark and Serious Movies Only, will that chief like it? Probably not and who cares, but Massawyrm says…

“The Incredible Hulk fucking rules. …Every bit as good as Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk takes the material we all love, gets at the heart of what makes it tick and then puts it on the screen FOR ADULTS. It’s dark. It’s heavy.”

Oh, and what about AICN’s Harry Knowles?

“OH HELL YEAH!” - Harry Knowles [includes animation of himself turning into Hulk, makes token allusion to "creaming"]

Elsewhere, reactions are equally elated, like this one…

“Except for one or two quiet moments shared by Banner and his girlfriend while on the lam, Incredible Hulk doesn’t waste a single frame on dull talky exposition. It is all plot-driven and action-filled. In fact, unlike the much-hyped Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Incredible Hulk never runs out of steam.” - Sci-Fi Movie Page

Gives yet another new meaning to “Nuke the Fridge.” Here’s an exclusive mini-reaction via txt/Twitter to Slashfilm just seconds ago…

“I was not expecting great things. I knew there was a lot of hype surrounding The Hulk, but I figured it might be just as disappointing as the first one. I am not a huge fan of fantasy/superhero movies because they can fail miserably if there’s poor CGI. But The Hulk was great! Not only was Edward Norton really convincing, but the action was on top of its game. I was pumped the whole time and waiting to see what happened next. Plus, after seeing Iron Man… I couldn’t help but feel anticipation and excitement during the last moments of the movie.” - Alana Taylor, Journalist, NYC

If a negative review(s) pops up, we’ll include it here, but for now, the buzz is on high. And we might as well tell you to stick around for the end credits. Also, the film’s ending is said to be a mega-highlight.

Discuss: HULK (not Ang Lee’s)! Look out for possible spoilers in the comments.

  • OH BLAIR
LIARS THIS MOVIE WILL BE TERRIBLE AND SUCK

SORRY BUT ITS A LAME SUPERHERO.
  • SuperDan
Good I can't wait to see this.

OH BLAIR: How is Hulk a lame superhero?
  • september11th

the movie will suck because its almost impossible to give a shit about a cgi character.

    also,

that scene posted last week with tim roth matrixing around hulk is so full of stupid, i refuse to believe these positive reviews just yet.

i agree with blair, this movie will be an epic fail, and only appeal to children.

  • OH BLAIR
The Hulk is a lame superhero... Nobody is very interested in a guy with superpowers that can turn him into a monster that is big and green...

Gah. I just thought the other hulk movie was so terrible that there is now chance that this one will be good, even in this new "marvel universe" but i Guess we will see.

I will see it and report back to you SuperDan, but believe me, I dont expect anything good....
  • Scott
hey, I'm all for a good movie.
I'll go see the Hulk if its as good
    as the reviews claim...
otherwise I'll go see "The Fall"
    instead.
  • Liz
All superheroes are pretty ridiculous, but the Hulk has interesting motivations and such. I think this will be cool, although I doubt I'll like it as much as Iron Man. And as someone who regularly quotes AICN, I also feel Hunter on "The Human Burrito" thing.
  • starblazer101
Im still not sure if i should go watch this or The Happening
  • Diego
"The Hulk is a lame superhero… Nobody is very interested in a guy with superpowers that can turn him into a monster that is big and green…"

I guess that explains why he's one of the most iconic, well known superheroes in history who's spawned countless stories and Christ knows how much revenue. Really, don't be so ignorant.
  • Chimaera
For realz. Who doesn't know the Hulk? Count me in ;)
  • patrizia
this movie will be ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do you understand!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • maremagnum
Yes, it will be ROCK. Yes.
  • Jojo
Those saying that this will suck or hulk sucks can go fuck themselves. FUCKERS

    HULK RULES! HULK SMASH!
  • Steelo
cats like the first one just want airplay. See it for yourself.
  • SUe
It'll be great. Everyone will be pleasantly suprised, trust me.
  • Kyle
It's hard to think of Ed Norton in a terrible film. That man is class.
But then again, I thought good things of Ang Lee before the first Hulk and he gave me Hulk's Elemental Father made of rock and the essence of life itself. They did lynch Ang Lee for that, didn't they? If not for that, then at least for hulk poodle right?
  • Meli
I'm taking these early reviews with a grain of salt, but
it does give me some hope that there is another comic
    hit waiting in the wings.
  • Robert
Man you sure can tell the kids from the grown-ups on this board. Can we set up a separate discussion forum for adults?
  • Jerry I can't believe it's not
This is going to be the greatest movie ever. period.
  • Walt
I seem to recall Harry Knowles was crazy about Godzilla and Charlie's Angels, also. But I will go see the Hulk. It looks better than the last one.
  • Brian
I'm sure this one will be quite good. Edward Norton is a way better actor than Eric Bana and Nick Nolte. Besides, they're just setting us up for the Avengers movies. There's going to be at least 2 more Ironman films (Gwyneth signed on for 3) and it looks like Captain America is going to hit the big screen again at some point. Makes me wonder about the rest of the Avengers.. a Thor movie perhaps?

But go see it and be sure to watch for a teaser after the credits again.. just judge for yourself.
  • dan
holy shit! harry knowles liked something!
  • Joe
Ed Norton and these positive reviews have convinced me.

I'll go see it the next time it rains around here.
  • All I am going to say is that people owe Ed Norton an apology for the nasty reports that went around about him being a diva for butting heads with the Marvel people. Ed Norton has yet to make a bad movie. He himself is a comic book fan, writer, producer, editor, and director. I am quite sure he has a lot to do with the movie not sucking. He said he would only do the movie if he could have creative direction with the movie. And people wrote such stupid and uncharacteristic remarks about him.
  • Propane
The Hulk isn't a superhero. He doesn't save babies from trees or pull old ladies from drains. He eats babies and rapes old ladies, if he's in the mood.

Seriously, the only way the Hulk is a hero is when someone tricks him into annihilating the bad guys.

'Hey, Hulk, see that guy there? He said Betty was amazing in bed, but she's uglier than you. He also said you're stupid'
HULK SMASSH! You think you so smart? *BAM* WHAT IS CAPITAL OF COCACOLA?! *CRASH*

The Hulk is one of the greatest anti-heros ever. His near invincibility, adaptive strength and utter lack of intelligence make him such a fun character.

    This movie's going to rock!

How the hell is this post spoiler free?

I didnt know there would be something related to Captain America in this movie like the Iron Man movie

    You F***ING idiot
  • seanovan
You can have all the wild speculation, screen grabs and trailers in the world, but its stuff like this post that make me want to see a movie.
  • Samwise
    HULK IS GONNA ROCK. PERIOD.
  • Johnson
I feel like I've been waiting for this movie to be made my entire life.

The best comic films are always the ones that add an entirely new dimension to the characters, revealing latent qualities not even explored in the Books.

Just skimming over Ed Norton's script, it's completely apparent that he's injected that kind of commitment to this project.

Hulk as Hero. Anger channelled into Courage.

    HELL'S YEAH.

SEEIN THIS MONDAY. AND AGAIN NEXT FRIDAY.
  • Djozer
    Starblazer101:

YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY SEE THE HULK.

The Happening sounds like the biggest downer of a movie, where people everywhere are killing themselves as Dirk Diggler looks constipatedly on. The payoff? It's M. Night's ridiculous take on Global Warming: Mother earths revenge is to make people kill themselves.

    Oh. Spoiler. My bad.

See the Incredible Hulk! It's sizing up to the be the Roller Coaster Ride everyone was expecting from Indy, but w/ FAR better acting and much, much more action!

Plus, we all need our Monster Showdown in New YORK fix for the summer, don't we?

    ;)

    HULK SMASH BOX OFFICE EXPECTATIONS!!!

(*& OH BLAIR is the officially the BIGGEST Sour-Puss in HISTORY! LIGHTEN UP! It's FICTION! ! !)
  • I just want to say, i've seen the screener on friday at washington dc. My girlfreind won a contest to see an early screener for incredible hulk. You guys can babble all you want but this hulk film will make up for the last one. I promise you that this movie is as good as iron man, if not better. Iron man was very good but it did have some slow parts to it and incredible hulk has much less, and the story gets real deep. Iron man is is at 270 million, you can expect hulk to do about that. Lets see how it goes,

Ending Teaser Spoiler!!!!!! Its Tony Stark coming to Bruce Banner (like Nick Furry did with Tony Stark) to tell him about the Avenger Mission.
  • evan
I wasn't a huge fan of Iron Man. I've always had high hopes for this new Hulk movie. I even rented the original Hulk tv series pilot from Netflix just get into the mood. You know what made the series so good? Yeah, Bill Bixby was great. But you know what? It was Ferrigno as the Hulk that actually made you feel sorry for him every time he was on screen. The Hulk is that big baby inside of all of us that gets out every once in a while and brings us back to our childhood. I really hope this movie lives up to my expectations.
  • Target
    Hey,

I saw a screener this morning!! The movie was VERY GOOD!! It has a deep and compelling story, some of the most realistic CGI in any movie that I have seen, and the actors did a fantastic job!! Edward Norton is outstanding, as is William Hurt!

I am thoroughly enjoying the web that Marvel is weaving in tying their superheroes together. We are all in for quite a ride!!

    Love the cameos too!!

    Target...

Ok, for the people who say this movie is going to suck, think about. MARVEL, the people who have been making the comic for the past 4-5 decades, are making the movie. They just hired the director, actor, etc.. Look what they did with Iron Man. I think Marvel will be able to handle another movie (aka The Incredible Hulk). They even thought the first one was horrible and that is why they are making this one. I think Marvel knows what they are doing.
  • evan
Just came back from watching the movie. Let me report: HULK SMASH! They hit it out of the park with this one. Maybe it's because I'm a huge hulk fan (pun definitely intended), but this movie was way better than Iron Man. I predict big time box office numbers. People in the theater were loving this!!! Wait, I need to calm down a bit. Don't want my pulse rising too quickly!
  • Ian
This really was a fantastic movie, completely packed with action. I LOVED Iron man, and Hulk gives it a fun for its money. The only way to describe the fight scenes between Abomination and Hulk is...EPIC! The final battle is how it should have been in both Iron man (too short ending fight), and Transformers (optimus getting his trash kicked). I couldn't help but smile and literally laugh because of its sheer awesome badassery!
  • orlando warren
I saw the movie today, all i can say is, HULK SMASH!!!!!!! Marvel is doing a great job of handling its own movies with marvel Studios instead of going to others. they taken Hulk to where the hulk should been the first time around and then added more kick ass on top. The movie made me ( a 34) year old man wanna go to the gym and pump up just so i can smash some cinder blocks..errr or try, LOL!!! He is iconic and if you dont know who the hulk is you aint from earth. Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk have definetly shown Marvels true abilities to bring you the comics to life!
  • HULKSUCC
THIS MOVIE SUCKED FOR THE FIRST 2 HOURS. THEY FORGOT TO PUT IN THE ACTION AND SPECIAL EFFECTS. THE LAST TEN MINUTES WERE GOOD, BUT WAS TO BORED FOR 2 HOURS TO CARE. NOT EVEN IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS IRONMAN. DISAPPOINTED BIG TIME! WE WANTED ACTION NOT BAD ACTING!
  • Anothercoilgun
This is the sequel but there is no indication of this. Nothing in the movie title nor even in the movie tells you whats going on or where they left off from in part 1.

Part 1 is far better. Part 2 had 0 plot and was vague. Only the military father had some likeness from part 1 and only by his tenacity to get new weapons. Neither the Hulk or the DR were like the people from part 1.
