People who think that religion necessarily has anything to do with God are starting on the wrong premise. It is refreshing to see that Bill Mayer has the balls to stand up to the fundamentalist hate mongering crap that pervades organized religion across the globe. My only critcism of the film is that he should have devoted some time to the mystical practices of all the great Religions, such as yoga, zen, sufi-ism and comtemplative Christianity. The people in these practices strive to see rather than preach god. I think Bill could have related better to these practices since that all place a greater emphasis on the same "doubt" that he sees lacking in religion. All religions get lost in the magical fluff that when looked at closer does not even matter. It's amazing to me that Christians promote the importance of the doctrine of the Virgin Birth at the same time losing the essential message of Christ to "do unto other's as you would have them do unto you."

After all Christ said:
"Split a piece of wood, and I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there." -gospel of St. Thomas
There is no magical fluff in those words, only a deep abiding and love for the world as it is.

It's obvious Mr Maher got most if not all of his 'facts' wrong.
The Bible doesn't say that Mary was still a virgin after she gave birth to Jesus, only the catholics say that.
If you want more e-mail me Bill.

Hell, I loved that movie. We watched it the day it came out and the theater was enjoying the humorous topic called religion from the definitions of men around the world. Hey isn't it great how the Muslims all say that Islam is all about love and peace and such, but then about all the killing...oh, it's just "politics." There must be a freakin' LOT of political Muslims running around as everyone who isn't a Muslim is an infidel and they kill ALL infidels, such as the one who's reading this right now, yes, YOU! I don't go for any of this religious crap. I mean, come on, really! If people have conversations with someone who isn't there today they know what it's called and it's treatable with proper medications. They needed medications back then. I say do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing and not a god's wrath, etc. The bible was never written as religious material, that was the work of men, controlling men, just as we have now in mankind. Duh, absolute power corrupts absolutely. Again, as the kids say DUH....!!! Religious weirdos. Stay out of my business and politics!

This movie and its premise sadden me. God is the Creator of all, including those who choose to deny Him. A wise Christian man once told an atheist, "If your theory is correct and there is no God, I lose nothing, If I am right, you lose everything." Isn't it worth it to find out the truth-to discover if the faith of millions is unfounded? If you search and truly want to find the truth, you will and you will never regret it. Don't you owe it to yourself to discover the truth?

Nothing is surer than death and taxes...well that's true unless you are a church. Churches don't pay taxes.

Why call it the 'so-called' natural world? How can we honestly study the unnatural world? What, by gum, would that consist of? Why should we give credence to folks who claim to be the experts of the unnatural world or the spiritual realm? Do palm and tea leaf readers get a say too?

It is a historical fact the church burned heretics and non-believers. Was it not the church, when it controlled the government that said the earth was flat, that the earth was the center of the universe and that prohibited study of cadavers? If anything our understanding of physics, mathematics, biology and astronomy were seriously compromised when the church controlled the government and education. C'mon, the church, during the dark ages, went out of its way to maintain absolute control for its own ends, not for the advancement of humanity or the planet. A brief review of church history would reveal that violence and cruelty that is so often alluded to by theists as being solely the law of the natural world. One has to wonder why a loving god would create a dog eat dog kind of world to begin with.

No, if the western world seems saner, we can thank the Enlightenment and the subsequent progressive movements for that.

There is so much in the holy books that are counter to anything even remotley resemblung ethical. We can do better than what they offer. And we can argue, debate and revise the soundness of our conclusions as we learn more about the world we find ourselves in.

Personally I think it is reason, and faith grounded in all knowledge, is what should govern our secular society, as well as the spiritual side of society.

We are either free to ignore both politics, and the pulpits, or to be involved in all aspects of society.

Nothing is surer than taxes and death regardless of one’s affiliations.

It is a historical fact that it was religion that original subsidized our universities and schools, and in many cases still even today, and that all belief systems demand more.

A brief review of natural history and the so-called natural world concurs that the laws of the jungle have bred only violence, and cruelty, and the pigheadedness of a dog eat, dog world, of which should give the unbeliever an epoch of interpretation.

Any holy book has ethical and philosophical principles which can enrich society, and in which all reasonable societies were originally founded upon.

Bill Maher claims he's 50% Jewish and %50 Catholic in the film. It's a safe bet that he's got the circumcision thing covered (or uncovered that is). Some Philistine he's turning out to be!

Reason, not faith grounded in holy books, should govern our secular society. Pontificate as much as you would like in your pulpits but leave the rest of society alone. You get a tax-free pass to talk as much holytalk as you'd like and we, the unchurched subsidize your lack of contribution to our schools and public revenues. Think about it. How dare the theists demand more.

A brief review of the history of religious bigotry, violence and wrongheadedness about the workings of the natural world, should give the theist a moment's pause, at the very least, for using any holy text as the principle basis for governing society. Who's holy book? Who's interpretation?

I would only like to say that I will be in prayer for all of you who especially Mr. Maher that poke fun of the Lord God Almighty. This movie looks to be so disgusting that even the name is horrible. I will just refer to it as Bill Maher's movie on religion. In one scene I viewed on slashfilm.com, he addresses an actor dressed as Jesus, questioning Who He is. Mr. Maher has the audacity to joke about the only human whom ever lived whom was without sin became a sacrifice for us all who were full of sin.

Apostle Kim Daniels stated on her website that God's awesomeness is about to be released to the world like never before. The hands of the fists that shake at God will soon open up and call Him Lord! Every tongue WILL confess and every knee WILL bow and yell, JESUS IS LORD!
Mr. Maher, like Goliath is standing in the valley of America mocking God. Goliath defied the armies of God and called them cowards. When Saul and Israel heard the words of the giant, they were AFRAID! David heard the mockery of Goliath and responded, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the Lord?" David's brother was mad at him. He asked him why he left his sheep to fight Goliath. Many pastors may feel the same way. They cannot understand doing anything outside of being with the sheep. Just plain pasturing! Do not fight any battles outside of your sanctuary! Well if we do not deal with the things going on outside the sanctuary, soon they will infiltrate out pulpits. It is the responsibility of the pastors to be community leaders. We must teach the people that there is 'a cause' to deal with what is going on in America outside of the comfort zones of our churches. David asked his brother; "Is there not a cause?" I ask you the same question today.
Many saints are so busy in their "calling" they forget about the "cause"! I prophesy that just as Goliath was dealt with, the Philistines of America will be openly dealt with for mocking God! In the meantime love God and hate what He hates! If you do this, YOU WILL VOTE RIGHT (righteous)!
but we have the authority given to us by Christ Jesus to command them on what to do." Nuff said, be transformed by the renewing of your mind in Christ Jesus and have a blessed day (!!!)

The theme park where Maher interviews Jesus isn't Catholic.
We went there over the summer. It's a Christian theme park; however, not Catholic. Thanks.

Maybe Maher should change his attack on religion as an assault on disorganised religion, and not forget opportunely that Bush is out of it so to speak very shortly. As for Bin Laden I can't see his style of religion progressing.

And in closing, peace starts with a smile, not a smirk or a jerk;-)

I think most ministers imagine that they are actually messengers of God. They become furious when someone like Maher comes along and contradicts what they stand for. Religion is used as a cover by many criminals because it helps them to get inside the heads of their victims. We see all kinds of crackpots who use religion as a reason for their bizarre behaviour. I could go on and on, but few people will ever change their views on religion.

Who has influenced more of the world than any other figure in history? What book has sold more copies than any other book?
How many atheists are there on their death bed? Very very few. Why is that, because there is self-evident Truth inside every person that they will live forever AND they will be judged for their deeds.

Unfortunately Bill is an example of a fool. Sad but true. Bill has pissed in the face of His Creator and He will pay one day unless He repents.

One more note for people who believe in the Big Bang and evolution....It is a much more leap of faith to believe in the big bang then in a Creator God. But then, the bible says, God will not allow prideful people to see the Truth.

Unfortunately Bill is an example of a fool. Sad but true. Bill has pissed in the face of His Creator and He will pay one day unless He repents.

One more note for people who believe in the Big Bang and evolution….It is a much more leap of faith to believe in the big bang then in a Creator God. But then, the bible says, God will not allow prideful people to see the Truth.

Maher doesnt believe in a Messiah but he believes Obama will end the war in 2 weeks and lower taxes thereby providing universal healthcare which will create jobs for greener fuel and a cleaner Earth and then through saying nice things to the Iranians, Obama will convince them not to develop nukes and to love Jews and that will make our economy stronger because he was a great community organizer as evidenced by the foundation William Ayres set him up to run while Palin was only a governor.

Then Obama will visit the lepers and boy will they be happy to see him!

I just look forward to the day Bill will come to know the freedom, love, joy, self control and peace found in Christ (Gal. 5:22) that beleivers have.
Some thoughts about the organized religion of Christianity, it is probably good that someone keeps asking the tough questions like would Jesus live in a place like the Vatican... however, it might be helpful for Bill and friends to take another look at the incredible good that has been done in the name of Jesus in Western Civilization -orphanages, hospitals, universities, and so on-. Our ideas regarding forgiveness and generosity, treating others the way we want to be treated all come from Jesus and his followers. Speaking of which, I'd have a hard time sleeping at night if I spoke about Bill and his friends the way they are speaking me and my friends. I guess Jesus still loves them too though :)

Bill Maher is a mental midget. He takes the classic liberal stance of throwing out nonsensical trash, then claiming "victory" when those he trashes can't defend their side. Not unlike "Have you stopped beating your wife yet."
He always surrounds himself with like-minded individuals to give the impression he's in the marjority, but in the end it's clear he's just a sad, lonely individual who isn't happy unless he feels superior to others.
