Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

As expected, DreamWorks Animation has released the teaser trailer for Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, and boy is is annoying. It starts with some crappy club music and the characters singing that “You Got To Move It, Movie It” song. As predicted, the penguins look like the only funny thing in the movie. I’m not even sure King Julien, voiced by the hilarious Sacha Baron Cohen, will make you laugh in this one. Hey look, the new James Bond film Quantum of Solace comes out the same weekend. Did I mention how excited I am to see WALL-E?

You can watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa hits theaters on November 7th 2008.

This film is going to need a laugh track.

Ugh. “I Like To Move It” was a mediocre one-off gag in the first movie, and now they’re completely pushing that as the main reason people should see the movie? Not to mention that the animation is exactly the same as the first one was three years ago, which makes it seem dated compared to Wall-E, Panda and even Horton FIVE MONTHS BEFORE RELEASE?

With Quantum of Solace opening the same weekend, I see this as a failure. 80 million domestic, tops.

I hate almost every animated film on the planet that is released nowadays. In fact aside from Monsters Inc., Toy Story, and The Lion King (the best animated film ever, and one of the best films ever) I’ve always hated them. But I found the original Madagascar to be an incredible guilty pleasure.

As for Madagascar 2, it still looks good. I’ll probably go the same route I did with the original, wait ’til hits the movie channels. During its first weekend, I’ll be seeing Quantum of Solace most likely several times.

Man I can’t wait until November 8 2008!!! It’s going to be awesome!!!! I can’t wait to see the sequel…………..to Daniel Craig as James Bond in Quantum of Solace!!!!!!! As for this, I actually saw the first Madagascar and I was extremely disappointed. This looks like a piece of crap. Only the penguins were interesting in the first one and it looks like they are still interesting, but as stated earlier, I am going to the movie theater on November 8, but not to see this.

Get it? It’s so funny because they’re talking animals and they’re singing! Absurd! Remember that song from the first one? God I’m glad they’re reusing that joke(???) because we really didn’t get enough of “move it” last time.

should have just built the movie around the penguins. Every other character sucks.

  7. Gravatar

I’m not even going to watch this as the first movie made me want to cut myself.

  8. Gravatar

    got milk?

  9. Gravatar

Its wort just by the penguins alone :)

Yes it’s a bit irritating, more of the same.. but it is a kids film, there is a little bit of stuff in there to keep the adults entertained (Penguins) but when you take your kids to the cinema to see a kids film you don’t expect a lot for yourself.. for adults.. (Appologies if any of you slating this/animated *kids* films are actually 8 years old)

    :¬p

I’ve never really been able to convince most people to watch Madagascar with me either - all the posted complaints are common. Nobody seems to realize:

    - The animation hasn’t “advanced” because nothing in the movie was ever supposed to pass for real. The design is meant to evoke the feeling of the original Looney Toones cartoons. This is like complaining that Bugs Bunny still looked 2D after three cartoons.

    - Ironically, the Penguins ARE THERE FOR THE KIDS. They are the slapstick relief, not the other way around. The penguins get one-liners and visual humour; the lion writes his own epitaph on a beach while the tide comes in. You don’t get the second joke? The vast majority of the jokes in the script are adult-oriented. Nobody under twenty would likely have gotten the majority of the references. Almost every person here cites the penguins as the saving comedic grace. Such a shame.

    - While I never cared for the “Move It” routine, it was an arbitrary song - it could have been any retro trite cheesesong and it would have fit the required joke. If you don’t like the song, then plug your ears for the entire three minutes it’s in the film. Seriously, your entire problem is built on three minutes from the movie.

    - The opinions of people who say things “make me want to cut myself” are generally dead-on and never skewed, in my experience. Where’s the sarcasm font on this thing?

    - That they’re animals who speak is not the joke. It’s not even part of the…anything. I can’t even understand why someone would assume that the “talking animals” is actually supposed to be funny in itself…oh right, there still exist pompous elitist artists, right?

    - One of the best nonlinear jokes I’ve ever seen in a movie is contained in Madagascar - when the zebra’s bamboo tiki hut door, isolated by itself with no wall, on a beach, inexplicably has a steel latch & clasp lock on it. And “Well, of course we’re going to fling poo at him” is Monty Pythonian in brilliance.

    - Or maybe it’s just because I watch it stoned. Seriously - lighten up people.

Well, i, for one, can’t wait to see it. It looks pretty good to me. And atleast they’re in Africa this time.

^MadagascarWasGenius I totally agree with you. This movie has lot of slapstick comedy, and I doubt many of the kids who are watching this get it.

I think it’s because it makes a lot of jokes about the lifestyle we have in america that no one gets it. What the first movie says is that american lifestyle is kinda like living in a virtual world that we created to best suit us, kind like the zoo’s for animals, totally different from the wild or the real world (similar message as matrix, and what marty the zebra says).

I agree it is hard to understand for people who’s been living in a consumer world filled with ads and who are totally surrounded by tons of media since the day they were born (ex. alex the lion). You have to go to a place where there is no tv, computers, news, etc, aka the wild, to be able to be able to get a sense of what this movie’s message is, but sadly almost no such place exists in the world anymore since everyone is getting westernized.

^madagascarWasGenius, you are so right and I’m so glad to hear that I’m not the only one to know…. :-D
I’m a huge fan myself and been declared nuts several times by friends. it’s difficult to get people to watch the movie and to like it aswell. l guess it’s because they expect to be plainly entertained and not challenged at all and therefore miss the witty humour all together.
I loved the way l felt respected by the makers of madagascar as a consumer, mainly by their attention to the detail. the story is being told in every corner of the screen, not just in the flickery center.
l was so taken with the rousseau-style jungle and also love the whacky loony style they tried to work into the characters. it’s so much nicer to watch an animated movie where the characters are not doomed to be super cute. that’s just like chewing cane sugar. besides, at last a movie that didn’t overemphazise meanings-deprived common sense morales. a real breather.
nevertheless I’m super nervous on what they did in the 2nd one (I stopped believing in trailers) and am preparing for disappointment. but hope dies last!
