No NPH? No rental. Perhaps the makers of Starship Troopers 3: Marauder should have thrown a good portion of that $20 million budget (yes, it’s direct-to-DVD) at Neil Patrick Harris, the token star of Paul Verhoeven’s campy, nihilistic 1997 original. The Japanese trailer has arrived and while it looks much better than anything I may have accidentally gleamed from the first home-market sequel, so does a half-eaten, six-day old meatball sub and Lost Boys 2. Do you think the Japanese subtitles here make everything seem that much more happy-joy? I do.

The SST franchise should really consider a move into the TV ether or webisodes. Casper Van Dien is back (from the dead?) as trooper Johnny Rico, the bugs are abundant and don’t look too disagreeable (Tremors 9 eat your Kevin Bacon stand-in’s heart out), and marking his debut as a director, Robocop writer Edward Neumeier has clearly found a canon to expand for a certain loyal fanbase (greetings). But I’m not sure the original film’s satirical B-movie propaganda works in the context of an actual B-movie. Almost meta, but not. There are shades of Battlestar Galactica here and shades of…okay, I’m just going to be nice.

Starship Troopers 3: Marauder will be released on DVD on August 5th, 2008.

Discuss: What did you think of the trailer for SST3? Who is the coolest exterminator character in film history?

-coolest exterminator ever is john goodman in ‘arachniphobia’.

-imo, this trailer looks fun & campy, just what i’d expect from this series.

-nph would make it alot cooler.

-any theories why casper vd had no real career? i thought when he first started making films we’d see him in bigger roles…man o man was i wrong.

Looks the same to me…the trailer looked like a video game :P

Hunter got it right when he said the franchise should move on to television.
The first movie got it right, ultra camp and gory fun. The second movie… not so much. This one seems to be a step in the right direction but still seems to lack that intangible magic that the first one had (has) for me.

Starship Troopers was a classic, everyone I know loves the movie, which is what surprised me when the second one was direct to DVD. ST3 definitely looks better than 2, but there’s just something about the first one that’s so good. It’s a real shame, I liked the storyline a lot, I wish they would have done something other than the total piece that was ST2. Perhaps that revelation about the “brain bug” will make a reappearance?

wait, there was a part II? The best exterminator has to be THE CROW, i guess. bronson was lame (they def need to remake that. its a no brainer). WE REALLY NEED AN OVER THE TOP SEQUEL. LETS GO PEOPLE LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN. thanks

Looks as good as Indy 4

    @Gajonka

Yeah, there was a part two, but Ive heard it was so bad, that I never really watched it.

  8. Gravatar

I still can’t believe how horribly they butchered the book….

    @ Captain Awesome
r u trying to say its gonna be good or not cuz its mixed feelings about indy 4 on the net, i say it rock (apart from nuke the fride and aliens)

back on topic this better be better the st2, i fell asleep though that movie twice and had to keep rewatching it

  10. Gravatar

    @ nick

    Please fix your grammar.

looks kinda nifty for a direct to dvd product, nice touch bringing back casper for the main lead, and some new bug creatures look sweet -

    im in

  13. Gravatar

they should let me direct the next one, i have some ideas on how to capture that campy feel again

  14. Gravatar

Yeah. It looks neat. I like how they stuck with miniatures (as far as I can tell), instead of trying to do everything with crappy CGI. I really liked that about the first movie.

  15. Gravatar

    Hold On…was there a part 2?

  16. Gravatar

    @ Jr. Said Monkey:

Apparently yes, but it was so bad that I wouldnt even bother downloading it.

  17. Gravatar

what’s not to like? now if they can just get bring back the Dina Meyers character as a naked, DNA enhanced, cyborg-clone-zombie supersoldier, this would be unchartable.

  18. Gravatar

All 3 Starship Troopers films will be coming out on Blu this Aug in the US (box set and separate) btw.

  19. Gravatar

hello I live in Mexico and have a question, this third film was direct to DVD? or some countries in cinema?

  20. Gravatar

I downloaded and watched the HD version, but I needed to delete because it was so crappy. IMDB 2/10.

  21. Gravatar

I’m not sure who is reporting the budget of STARSHIP TROOPERS 3 as 20 million. In fact it was less than 9million. Many of us who worked on this worked on our own time to help make it as good as possible under the circumstances.

We do appreciate hearing from those who enjoyed the film, after all that work.

    thanks,

    robert s.
