Well, it looks like Guy Ritchie (right) and Joel Silver’s Sgt. Rock will have to wait. Ritchie will direct Sherlock Holmes for Warner Bros., an adaptation of producer Lionel Wigram’s upcoming comic book. Neil Marshall was previously attached to helm, and WB has said that the film will have the same realism and seriousness as Batman Begins. Mirroring our modern man (yeah, right), this iteration of Holmes will focus more on the character’s formidable pugilism, swordsmanship (hello, ladies) and an appetite for, yep, adventure. Dan Lin (The Departed, 10,000 BC, Terminator 4) will co-produce.

Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in the 19th Century, some of the British detective’s “Victorian stuffiness” will be nixed for the 2010 film. Whether this means no appearance by Holmes’s silly hat, monocled fashion, or his signature pipe was not specified. Dr. John H. Watson will remain Holmes’s affable sidekick. Let’s hope Watson’s not reenvisioned as a bitchin’ kite-surfer with an addiction to narcotics Red Bull.

Ritchie is clearly untested when it comes to studio blockbusters, and I wonder how much of his frenetic style will transfer over. But it sounds like a cool project for him and I’m glad it’s a Brit in the director’s chair. And a cool movie for audiences too, as long as the dizzying sleuth-dom isn’t overshadowed by madcap stunts a la a Brosnan Bond or with rapper actors. I’ve always wanted to see DDL play Holmes (who wouldn’t), and I’m really curious to see who lands the two main roles here. Sounds like WB will be “casting up,” which always brightens the day at Slashfilm.

Discuss: Who for Holmes? Who for Watson? Do you see Ritchie making a cool film?

He hasn't made a cool film since Snatch. Probably because his wife has owned his testicles for years now.

Not sure about Sherlock Holmes, I guess it depends how it's done. Maybe if it's like "Young Sherlock Holmes"? or "From Hell"? Even though From Hell it didn't have Sherlock Holmes in it, I loved the vibe and style the Hughes Brothers went for in that film.

holmes doesn't need a reinvention he just needs a smart movie. if this were chris nolan that's what we could expect but i think ritchie will emphasise the wrong elements.
  • Davezilla
I hope that it's period piece not a MODERN movie

    @ Davezilla

Yeah, I hope it goes the direction of The Prestige, another Nolan film (go, figure).
  • Captain Awesome
Sherlock Holmes will be investigating crimes involving guns that fire shot.
  • Antibodies
I hope Jason Statham is Sherlock.
  • VegaBro
M Night Shyamalan is probably a better filmmaker than Guy Ritchie. I have little interest in any of his movies.

ddl - holmes (excellent idea hunter, i LOL it was so perfect!)
    bob hoskins - watson
    gary oldman - moriarty

that rivals even bale & ledgers face off. i too hope the sluething is the focus, not the action. ritchie is not my first pick for director, as nolan would be absolutely perfect for the type of story & style that the holmes universe requires. but as you said, ritchie is untested here, so i'm up for it.

Being a Sherlock Holmes fan im not going to be sure about this, until I see a teaser trailer. Thats if this ever gets made. I remember years ago when There was the script for Sherlock Holmes and the Vengeance of Dracula. Which got good reviews from IGN but sill is in development hell.
  • matthew
    David Tennant for Holmes.

Be kinda cool if Holmes goes after Jack the Ripper, maybe throw in some timetravel?
Maybe Malcom McDowell could play Sherlock?
Throw in a love interest, whal-la instant classic!

If it gets a smart Script and good pacing brought on by good editing, then sure, this could work just fine. Am I worried about Guy directing? Nah, he knows how to make a real film, he just chooses to make Guy Richie films. Remember, it's all about the script.

    Maddonna cameo????? ;-p

I really love most of what guy ritchie is doing. He's clearly best at doing semicomedian/crime movies from what i've seen, so i'm personally not so sure on how he would do with a crimesolving movie like Sherlock Holmes. After all, this genre, if you will, has a lot less action than regular action movies. Still, it could be pretty interesting..
  • Vega Bro
If only Hitchcock were still alive and poor enought to be willing to do this. He is the only one that could make it actually interesting.
  • Mugato3000
How about Hugh Jackman. He's already played Victorian cool in The Prestige.
  • His movies are a shame. I don't want him to make this movie.
  • Ralph Fiennes for Sherlock Holmes and Ray Winstone for Watson
  • Karmakin
    DDL would be great.

But if you're going to update it, especially Ritchie style, you can also go with something offbeat, you need a Holmes and Watson who banter in an absurdly intelligent manner (almost over the top). Preferably two intelligent British actors with a history together, the ability to throw a subtle but hiliarious line and fits the Holmes/Watson iconography (Lanky for Holmes, a bit shorter and heavy set for Watson)

Yes, I'm saying cast Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.

I have thought this over for a long time, since before the concept of Richtea doing the do. How about David Walliams for Sherlock and Matt Lucas for Doc W?
Don't dismiss it immediately, Walliams has proven himself as a worthy actor, and if Lucas seems a bit too far fetched there is always Timothy Spall.
I'm afraid though, no one will replace Jeremy Brett. It needs a touch of eccentricity or it will fail.
  • Adam
Oh, I agree entirely with Kieran Wars: Jeremy Brett is unbeatable.

But if there's any hope of actually making this film even slightly good, David Tennant needs to be cast as Holmes. He's tall, slim, can act better than any actor I've ever seen, has a hawkish face, is quirky, and is actually British (I'm sorry, but no American is playing Holmes). It would also give him a chance to demonstrate his incredible versatility.

For Watson . . . Perhaps Sam Troughton. (Yes, I do think they should go for a younger Holmes and Watson, especially if they want to concentrate on the more physical side of Holmes, which is a bad move, in my opinion).

Also, I hope they don't put Holmes in a deerstalker hat and shove a pipe in his mouth, because that WOULD ruin it.
  • Kieran Wars
Rumours abound that Jason Statham (Transporter) is Sherlock Holmes, Dexter Fletcher is Dr Watson.
    Poo!
Aparently Madge might make a cameo appearance too.
