The PG-13 Effect: Brett Ratner’s officially “blowing ‘em where the pampers is.” The Miami-born maverick tells MTV that his Beverly Hills Kindergarten Cop 4 will be out to impress kids who can’t get into PG-13 movies. Is there another franchise that has ever consisted of three R-rated films (two of which are really good) and then had a PG sequel?

“Ten-year-old kids, 12-year-old kids don’t really know the old Beverly Hills Cop. So it’s an opportunity to make it new for kids,” Ratner said. “The same way it felt for me watching Beverly Hills Cop when I was a kid, that’s what I want to do for kids today.”

The youth have gone wild on Avenue Crazy. Ratner doesn’t go out and say it will be PG, no, but he didn’t include 13-year-old kids in that above quote either. But let’s say it’s PG-13. What is going on? Terminators blow smaller bullet holes into revolting humans, John McClane can’t say his signature line anymore because it will corrupt Justin Long, and now Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley, a DETROIT COP/wiseass won’t ratatat purpled language?

This trend of teening down makes me appreciate Rambo even more, and that’s not even possible. It’s silly to get mad about ratings, I agree with some of you in the comments, but damn, this is not what Ol’ Dirty Bastard meant when he said he did it “for the children.” Seth Rogen and a bag of weed can only do so much for moviegoers of rollercoaster height. Don’t worry, though, Ratner knows Foley…

“We’re trying to revitalize the franchise. He was one of my favorite movie characters of all-time, Axel Foley, by far the coolest movie character,” he said. “It’s an honor to be able to direct another Beverly Hills Cop film.”

At least he didn’t bring up The Dark Knight. Some people have emailed to say he might have been kidding, to which I replied, so he’s not Brett Ratner afterall?

Discuss: Will this be worse than Cop and 1/2? This is not really applicable in this situation, but who cares: Nuke the Fridge.

Brett Ratner should die in a fire. Seriously? Who in Hollywood is giving this guy money? Is it the same people who keep funding Uwe Boll's movies cause it seems that way.
  • cinemaniac1979
$10 says this is partly Murphy's fault. Having kids was the worst thing that ever happened to that man's career.

Ratner will be the second worst.
  • This just sounds so funny, like he intentionally said it to get people riled up. His statement begs for hate and he knows it. XD
  • If Murphy can't get Delirious or Raw for a new Beverly Hills Cop movie then what's the point!? I'm surprised Ratner isn't just replacing him with Chris Tucker....and a special appearance by Jackie Chan. Oh, and thanks for ending the X-Men trilogy on a sour note, Brett with too many t's.
  • I just vomited...
BHC 1 & 2 were great... obviously 3 could have been better, but it
still had the same vulgar feel...
The thought of a rated PG BHC is just sickening!!

Dont get me wrong i hate brett ratner as much as the management. But I do think you are misreading the quote a bit. He was compairing the situation to when he was a kid watching rated R movies.

So if anything he is advocating that 8 year olds go see BHC4 with their parents.

    That being said ratner sucks.

    God Help Us.

    Devil Kill Ratner.

    The End.

It should be Axel Foley meets Buddy Love meets Pluto Nash meets Norbit. Sounds like a winner to me, Brett Ratner is a movie GOD.

"Is there another franchise that has ever consisted of three R-rated films (two of which are really good) and then had a PG sequel?"

Just to play devil's advocate - Die Hard actually pulled this off somewhat. That being said, BHC4 will be terrible.

i was done with anything ratner touched after the x-men 3 abortion, and now sadly, i can no longer wait for eddie murphy to pull his head out of his kids asses. this is disappointing news, but not really surprising.

    @ Ian

Compare McG's recent defense of Terminator 4's PG-13 rating. Usually directors play up the "we're with the fanboys" schtick when an R-rated franchise takes the plunge into teen territory. Here, Ratner is explicitly saying he's "doing it for the kids" and by kids he mentions 10-12 year olds. This is something we never heard from Nolan about Batman, for instance, and no, that is not a comparison between these directors.

    @ Bill

Die Hard 4 was rated PG-13. It didn't target 10-12 year olds. And I hate that movie, Peter liked it. It has a 30/50/20 hate/okay/love ratio imo.

    I am absolutely disgusted!
Can Brett Ratner, Michael Bay and Uwe Boll both be catapulted out of this universe?!
  • Tyler
this really makes me angry, ir they are gonna make another BHC movie, why bother if you are gonna make it PG. i mean its pointless!
  • Captain Awesome
MCG and Ratner are the Turner & Hooch of movie directors.
  • Captain Awesome
We all watched R rated movies because there was such a gulf between "kids movies" and everything else. Unlike us, kids these days are pandered to, marketed to, and because we don't want to upset "mommy". We put up with this bland watered-down bullshit.

DH4 was pretty much the beginning of this MTV-ing of film franchises. I'm sure Batman Begins was cited for that stupid film too.

"Is there another franchise that has ever consisted of three R-rated films (two of which are really good) and then had a PG sequel?"

Yes. Die Hard. And I think part 4 suffered from being watered down.

Can we just get some new movies, franchises, and opportunities for nostalgia please? Who in their right mind has given a flying fig about Eddie Murphy in the past 10 years? Old franchise + new updated edition for audience to young to remember the original = poop. BH4. Poop. Die Hard 4. Poop. Terminator 4. Poop. Indiana Jones 4. Nuked the fridge and poop. Who cares? God I wish there was just one original idea out there that wasn't based on a book or a video game or an old movie that Hollywood would just hold up and go, "Look, we remembered that this art form could be used to make some really good stuff too." That I could get excited for.
  • Dan
At least we know Back to the Future 3 and Ghostbusters 3 will never be made!!! Yes!!!
  • jfive
What 11 or 12 year old kid would give a crap about a BH4? How many of those kids do u think even know who Eddy Murphy is? Very bad idea IMO make BH4 R and raw or dont even make it at all the end!
  • 790
(Nuke the fridge) a new term for JTS has now been invented! Yeah!!!!

    That's all I got.

    My (give-a-shit-factor) for BHC4 is -4.
  • 790
    Lol on that Pampers photo!!!
  • Joe Newman
wait there only two Beverly hills cop movies! what is he talking about
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Joe Newman

Um, I wish there were, but no, there is a third movie. Your world sounds nice, how much are tickets?
  • thomas040
if he can't say "fuck" he is not axel foley.. simple as that.
  • willmoorexcore
    ... holy shit.
  • “Is there another franchise that has ever consisted of three R-rated films (two of which are really good) and then had a PG sequel?”

How about four R-rated films in one series, two R-rated films in another series, then a crossover sequel that is rated PG-13? Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, Predator, Predator 2........ then Alien vs. Predator.
  • ...en ese caso, Axex Foley ha muerto....
...in this case, Axel Foley has die...
  • ANGRY BROOMSTICK!!!
    KILL BRET RATNER NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • charles
I love Beverly Hills Cop, the entire trilogy. Now with that said, if this movie is nothing but R I won't see it. B.H.C. was about adult themed comedy. I just can't see Eddie not saying "Fuck" here or a "shit" there
ten times. Brett is seriously out of touch with youth of today and yesterday. When I was a kid I wanted to see bigg titties and here fuck 40 times. I didn't want to watch Barney. I hope this is a fucking joke.
  • Brooklyn
i hope this is a joke, common on. all these 80's movies remade
indiana jones, rambo, die hard 4, at least let one good 80's classic movie be just as good. i bet that none of these 10 or 12 year olds
would even want to see BHC 4,they probaly don't even no what BHC is, but the adults who remeber the smart ass Axel Foley from the 80's will. Don't water this great classic movie down
