IESB speculates that director Peter Segal, currently attached to helm a Shazam feature for Warner Bros., might also be the man who brings the studio’s planned tentpole, Jonny Quest, to the world as well for Summer ‘09. Apparently the script by Dan Mazeau is quite strong and in better shooting condition than Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam. Moroever, the site spoke to Segal recently, who was enthusiastic about the latest screenplay, noted his involvement with getting a Quest flick off the ground in the past, and even discussed casting preferences (The Rock for special agent Roger “Race” Bannon). As you might recall, for over a year now Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play Shazam’s Black Adam.

At the center of the Jonny Quest franchise is the Hanna-Barbera cartoon, about the titular young boy, his scientist father, his adopted Indian brother, a spastic bulldog, and a snowy haired special agent/bodyguard who hop around the globe pursuing epic cryptozoological and sci-fi adventures. Quest is one of several retro tentpole projects on Hollywood’s burner, including Buck Rogers, Spielberg/Jackson’s Tintin, the now filming Transformers 2, and another live-action He-Man flick (also buzzing loudly at Warner Bros.). Of course, the recent wipe-out of the similarly cheeky/mothballed Speed Racer is no doubt being taken into consideration when updating Quest.

Also of note: David Goyer’s Supermax, which now looks to have broader box office potential after the success of Iron Man, has been retitled Green Arrow. The well-reviewed script, which sees Green Arrow facing off in a high security prison with DC villains like The Riddler, is by Justin Marks, who wrote the aforemenioned He-Man script that’s driving the Internet nuts right now.

Discuss: Is Jonny Quest the next Speed Racer or the next Transformers/Harry Potter? Is Segal a smart choice? Could Green Arrow be the next Iron Man?

I'd rather see a Venture Brothers movie.

Hell yeah bring back Jonny Quest! It'll be better than Crystal Skull, for sure....

...but wait. This might compete with the Mutt Williams/Indy Jr. movies...

I read the article and realisticly, if pre-production hasn't started on any of these projects, i can't see a 2009 for any of them.
  • Matt H
Iron Man 2 will be the next Iron Man. Silly Peter...

the plot of Green Arrow sounds amazing! But it sounds like a movie that only the fans could enjoy. Unless they just make a good movie and assume that people will be able to figure out who Oliver Queen is and who all these super villians are....
  • It sounded cooler as Supermax, just titling it Green Arrow takes away from it.

no offense, but that third question is kind of silly, Green Arrow is DC and Iron Man is Marvel. its taken Marvel long enough to crossover within its own universe (tony stark in upcomming iron man) i dont see Green Arrow in Iron Man any time soon.

aren't most straight boys pretty titular? im an assular man myself.

    @ Rob F.

I'm not offended, just don't try flying out of London with this thought in your head.

The comparison has nothing to do with Marvel/DC loyalties. Green Arrow is a B-character, just like Iron Man. Studios now see the sky as the limit for characters on this rung of the comicverse's totem pole. Not in those ridic words exactly, but see my point?

    @ big daddy

I have no idea what Jonny Quest's sexual preference is, but there are those rumors about Bandit.

Yes, I really liked Supermax as well. Combining any word with Super usually evokes '80s rock out imagery with me. However, the title change was inevitable. You have to think about what looks better on a Big Gulp to John Public.

I think creating the Green Arrow me is a step in the wrong direction. It's like stepping past the A listers like Flash, Green Lantern and Wonder Woman to the B listers. I don't have a distaste for Green Arrow, but he doesn't exactly yell Summer Action Hero! I personally like the direction Marvel is going in bringing in the big guns to tie with the release of the Avengers, so we get to see their A + lineup. DC could learn something from this if they ever want their movies to lift off the ground with the one exception being Batman Begins and TDK.

Matt Damon still qued to be Green Arrow? I know those were the rumors a while back! I think he would make a great Green Arrow!

Eh, the answer is C) cannot be determined from the info provided.

    Not at all
This production should be entirely in the hands of Doc Hammer and Jackson publik

Thank God, I've been waiting for a Johnny Quest film for some time now. Gosh , I haven't even seen the cartoon in about a decade. Damn I pray they don't screw it up.
  • Glad to see some other TVB fans weighing in. Think I'd have a tough time taking a Jonny Q movie seriously after his descent into addiction on THE VENTURE BROS!
  • MuMa
NO SEGAL IS NOT THE RIGHT CHOICE. and i hope they include the jessie bannon character. this is so upsetting. i really hope they don't screw it up if it does in fact become a film. and i also wonder whether they'll opt to incorporate both the old and new versions of the cartoon. i recall the new adventures of johnny quest having dabbled in virtual reality. that could either be very cool or incredibly stupid. i really hope they hold off for someone better to direct it though.
