Early Buzz: WALL-E Gets Rave Reviews

WALL-E

Pixar screened WALL-E at their wrap party celebration, and it appears a few outsiders got in. Two reviews have leaked onto the interwebs. DoomMunky calls the film “honestly funny, moving and exciting,” refers to Wall-E itself (or is it himself?) as “adorable and endearing.”

“It’s a great, great movie. … I can’t wait to see it again, and I never want to see something again right away.”

A second glowing review showed up briefly before suddenly disappearing over on the TAG Blog. Thankfully our friends at Upcoming Pixar was able to save the text:

“It is about as far from the “same-old” as you can get. I got to see it last night and it is nothing less than astonishing. A love story with robots that is so emotional and touching. Robots who teach humans how to be human again. And it is the best looking film so far this year of any released or on the horizon. The animation is virtually ALL pantomime-and is so entertaining. I can’t wait to see it again! What an amazing risk Pixar took-and it really pays off in spades.”

I can’t explain how extremely excited I am to see this film. I’m pretty sure it will be my favorite of the year (yes, even over Dark Knight… let the comments begin).

But that does sounds like the "same-old". Inanimate objects with feelings teaching humans the meaning of life? You don't say!?!
  • uh
Sorry Awesome, have to disagree with you here. A lot of storytellers try it, and usually fail par ET.

Im with you Petter, Wall-E then Dark Knight =)
  • Bob
well of course wall-e is going to get rave reviews. i have never doubted pixar in my life, but their future projects (minus toy story 3) don't sound that exciting
  • Sauce
Honestly...I don't know what they drink or what they eat...or what kind of fumes they pump into that place, but I'm always amazed at the Top Notch quality that they produce over there.

And Pixar's success? It's not the great Graphics (although they set the bar for that right now), it's not great voice acting (though they get that as well), and it's not big name stars (Even if people line up for parts)...It's the stories and the scripts. More of Hollywood should take a lesson from them and make Original Ideas and take the time to get the best people and the best artists to make something new and exciting.

If I'm a fanboy of anything, it's Pixar. The Absolute Gold Standard in Hollywood right now and for the past ten years.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, I saw over 6 minutes of this (and that's excluding trailers and promo footage) and I was utterly enchanted. I can see how I'll be completely taken with the whole film.

The bit where he gets blasted out of Earth holding onto the spaceship and he looks around him is so beautifully done, that the trailer which hacks that scene up into small sections doesn't convey the power of the whole scene.

Is there anyone that thinks this is lame?
Rusty Lunch bucket that wants your money!!

Every Pixar film is the same in pixar ways.
I will never see this ....

Ok Bring the hate, I didn't get enough at work.....
  • cinemaniac1979
    Dear 790,

Trolls belong under bridges, not on the Interwebs.

    Sincerely,

    Everyone Else on the Interwebs
  • 790
    Haha.
Second time this week I've been called a Troll.

    Thanks for being polite...;-)

Ok come on is that all ya got?
  • gocitizen
At this point, does anyone really expect anything but greatness out of Pixar? They continue to take their time "crafting" original ideas while the rest of Hollywood devours itself.

well....minus that Toy Story glitch. Please, scrap the sequels Pixar.

Wall-e is going to be a pretty big star.
  • Joe
I'm all aboard for Wall-E over DK.

My reasoning? The IMAX footage in front of I Am Legend was great... but seeing the first trailer for Wall-E in front of an exclusive sneak peek of Ratatouille was excellent.
  • brian
    more than the dark knight

    that's blasphemy
  • 790
I have nothing against the WALL-E fans, but over TDK?
Wow we Wow I really feel outnumbered and sometimes like I'm on another planet.

    A planet of kids.....?

    With network access. :-(
  • Joe
TDK and Wall-E hit 2 separate parts of my moviegoing heart so I think its ridiculous to even try and compare the 2 in any way shape or form. Both are going to be awesome and beat (I hope) my extremely lofty expectations.
  • Neil
same here Joe...two totally diff. movies that are both going to be awesome in their own way...

...and i def. agree w/ sauce. hollywood needs more original stories...and by original i don't mean "inspired by a true story" either...brand new, plucked purely from the screenwriters fuzzy little brains...

thats exciting for me, when an ORIGINAL script works, its amazing!
  • Sausage
OMG Wall-E for president!!! Wall-E looks so good and I am very excited to see it!!!
  • big daddy
    @ 790

i have respect for you, so i will not be rude.. do not fuck with Wall-E.

i still fight back tears at the end of monsters inc. pixar is awesome, and i would give both of my balls to work for them.
  • 790
Well when you put it that way Big Daddy, ok no prob. ;-)

Don't castrate! Its just a bad idea....
  • Dan
Yes, Peter! I've been telling people that, as much as I loved Batman Begins and am excited seeing Ledger play Joker, WALL-E has been my number one most anticipated movie of '08 since I saw the first trailer. Go Pixar!
  • pixar sucks
wall e is a shear rip off of johny 5 ( and storylineof short circut ) and rob the robot just goes to show hollywood is running out of ideas
  • hogarth
The movie is fine - saw it last weekend at the Disney studio during a screening for the animation staff (and their families).
There ARE problems with it, however. Most small children will be left wondering what is going on, since nothing is explained on their level. The movie is full of characters who LOOK appealing to children, but do things for adult reasons that are unexplained.
There is also a critical moment near the end (which I will not spoil) that is unbelievable period, and is unexplained even on an adult level.
Visually - as one expects from Pixar - the movie raises the bar yet again. Story-wise, it is a bit thin, and there are one or two major plot holes. Not Pixar's best effort on that front. Nemo remains Pixar's most compelling story.
  • yeah
Would it really be so horrible if kids don't really get it. There's plenty of kids animations with slap stick funny humor that appeals to kids on their level. However, I'd love to see an animated film that happens to be told on a more adult level. It's about time, and if this is the case, then bravo pixar for inventing a new level of animated films.
  • NotBuyingit
I saw it Monday evening June 23 and thought it was too heavy handed with a Political agenda. The romance between WALL-E & EVE is really cute but gets buried under the preaching about obesity and the Planet Earth being abused. It was 45 minutes before ANY dialog was given. A LOT of young people were getting very antsy by the all but 2 hour time of the film.
It's gonna have a HUGE weekend, but I don't think it has legs.
  • Miguel
I have been waiting for The Dark Knight since 2005 but somewhere in that time Wall-E came in and grabbed my attention. I still want to see The Dark Knight more but Wall-E is right up there man. Plus it's a movie that even my 2 year old son is excited about. As cool as The Dark Knight looks and is going to be, there's just nothing that compares to sharing a movie with your children. Wall-E will be a very special film, while The Dark Knight will be a mind blowing one.
  • Marvelous M
I just saw a midnight showing of the movie, and I think I'm in love. It met and exceeded all my expectations. How does Pixar do it?!?! Absolutely incredible...
  • FairTaxGator
Now, having not seen the film, I cannot speak of its power or story line, but I do know I am extremely excited about it and I will make time to see it, guaranteed.
I wanted to say, however, that the lack of dialog is not necessarily a negative trait. Has anyone seen The Tripplets of Belleville? FANTASTIC and hilarious movie! And as far as dialog, you can practially count the words said on one hand. Dialog isn't necessary to portray emotion or stir feelings. If Wall E is as powerful as people say without a word in the first 45 minutes, I say Pixar deserves even more credit, not less.

My Wife and I took our two grandchildren to see the film today. We were all very disappointed by the political agenda of the film. I am sure it was way over the heads of anyone under the age of 12 in the theater. This film was in all likelihood funded by environmentalist groups. The story line is that man has polluted the earth to the point of it becoming uninhabitable. The love connection between the two robots is only there to attempt to cover up the true message of the film. Al Gore will love this film. All this came at a cost to me of $52.00 (tickets, soda, and popcorn)
  • Mom-of-four
With so little dialogue, I thought my kids would be bored. I also wondered what they would think of the heavy message. Turns out, they loved the movie and seemed to miss the message entirely. Watching the film, I wondered about all the obese people that will see this with their children and the embarrassment that will cause. While we all know obesity is not a good thing and not something to be praised, the movie was so clearly saying America is on a long, straight path to becoming a nation of lazy fat people sitting in Lazy-Boy chairs sipping giant soft drinks. Okay, so maybe they are not far off. But I happen to have some very nice overweight friends who are likely to take their kids to see this and be mortified. They will want to sneak out of the theater is my guess. I just think they should be warned. Otherwise, I thought the movie was clever. No shock coming from Pixar.
  • I went to see "Wall-E" today and expected to get my money's worth -- but did not. I was gravely disappointed and appalled at its content. It does not measure up to previous Pixar movies. Within 5 minutes, I felt sick to my stomach. It seemed as though I was watching an unrealistic version, even though it was computer animated, of Al Gore's global warming hoax, "An Unfortunate Truth". Throughout the entire film, I felt I was being barraged by a propaganda tool as I sat among many families with young children in the theatre. "Wall-E" depicts a dead, life-deprived world of the near future, machines in control of people, and portrays all people as fat, stupid, and irresponsible with no idea of outside issues. It has a very unpatriotic theme designed toward creating an atmosphere of despair, fear, and uncertainty. Pixar should remember that it is a family-geared entertainment company. This film openly and shamelessly presents the desire to be politically correct and passes it off as appropriate entertainment for children.

Well put Cora, I'm hearing this again and again.
  • big daddy
so you guys dont like to take your kids to a movie and get slapped in the face with reality? thats what im hearing. its not a secret that we are all getting fatter, causing more pollution, and creating more trash. its also no secret that no one gives a phuck, especially judging by these comments.

you people actually confirm the reality of the message, im sure the obese people in this movie would have reacted the same way if they saw the movie. 'god forbid fat people get offended by this' ..... 'omg that would never happen, we dont have to change our ways, thats just propaganda'... unfortunately, it isnt hard to believe that you 'adults' would react this way to seeing a vision of the future that you yourselves are propagating. thats why the message is given to children, hopefully they are smarter and get the picture.
  • Cora...go on keep thinking it's AL Gore's Hoax...see where that gets us.

But as a all out Pixar Fan I was sorely disappointed.

First, Pixar's strength has been the script...no dialog...no script...ack. "EEEEVVVVE, WALLLEEEE, EVVEEEEEEE, WALLLLLEEEE, EVVEEEEE, EALLLLEEE" ENNNOUGHGGGGGGHHH ALREADDDDDDYYYY.

Second, it's not the GARBAGE that is the problem...it's the CO2!

Third, we know, we know, being fat is not a good thing...but humiliating people is worse, far worse. I work hard at staying in good shpe and I do it mainly to show my kids it's the way to live you life, but I don't go around pointing and laughing at fat people either. Shameful.
  • Reality in “Wall-E” is blown completely out of proportion. Honest adults discern the difference between true facts about our environment and the storyline, while kids readily believe such a despairing world will be our future. Kids are impressionable. Blowing up the facts like this gives them completely the wrong message. This movie’s message should be reserved until they are older and can discern for themselves the true status of our environment instead of the dire predictions of some Hollywood liberals. It is possible for anyone to litter the earth and/or get fat: people have been doing it since time began. Our culture has found many ways to dispose of waste and maintain sanitation. Why should people feel guilty for existing and discarding waste as all of Earth's creatures have always done? Children can learn the true reality from their parents. Dire environmental predictions preached by politicians should be kept out of family entertainment. Such exaggeration of the truth for younger, impressionable audiences foreshadows Bolshevik propaganda tactics. Also consider past propaganda from Hollywood: Disney’s anti-Hitler cartoons and Frank Capra films, to mention a few. As to obesity, it is a matter of choice for most people – each person is responsible for everything that goes into their mouth. There are many people who choose to keep their bodies healthy. The film suggests that all people are mindless bingers and refuse to take care of themselves. Both obese and skinny people will be offended, the obese because they are the only ones who put themselves in that state of health, and the skinny because they do not see themselves in such a wrong, collective view of one facet of society. Thoughtful adults with children will understand this. Disney/Pixar hopes that its viewers are gullible. Looking at the numerous positive reviews, it is evident that many are.

me and the rest of my family all agree. this movie was possibly the worst movie we've ever seen. it was absolutely horrendous. do not waste your money on this garbage film. it was horrible. i couldnt even believe my eyes. sorry but thats the truth.
  • big daddy
    @ cora
you arent wrong in what you are saying, but i dont totally agree with you. i cant say much, i havent seen the movie myself yet, but i keep hearing about the message. the image of the earth covered in trash wouldnt happen unless we left the earth. we wouldnt have to leave the earth unless it was dead or inhospitable, which can be caused by excessive pollution. That is what i was getting at with the vision of the future. i dont see trash and obesity as a danger, because like you said, its a fact of life as old as time.

the danger of pollution is a real danger though. this message is not about good guys or bad guys, or politics. it is about the preservation of the planet, the only place we can call home (at this point). Why would anyone take sides in an arguement about keeping the earth alive?

also, it is important to teach kids to clean up and get some excersize as well, because its healthy, but i dont know how far it is pushed in the movie, which i am dying to see.
  • John
It was really, really good! My daughter who is five, loved it.

She commented on how the societal interactions of human beings were slowly being deteriorated by technology. Also, she thought EVE was really pretty. However, she especially liked how the lethargy of the current generation of Americans was amplified to extraneous volumes in order to pass a message. A message, which according to these comments, is being heard loud and clear.

So honestly, if a five year-old can appreciate the movie and it's message, why can't we all do the same?
  • I am glad others share my view. Such activities as cleaning up after ourselves and keeping healthy are things our families should teach us; not the movies. Political issues should be kept in the debate halls. After seeing the movie, I do not think I exaggerate Disney/Pixar's political involvement. To big daddy,
when you see the movie, let me know what you think.
  • 790
    Disney has an adgenda...........
Now Pixar is part of that.

They don't waste much time do they?
  • Angelica
I'm sorry but these comments are disgusting. I can't believe that people are so horrified to see what the Earth is becoming. No matter what the cause is, the Earth is dying, and Pixar was brave enough to show it.
  • Sharlene
I took my 5 year old daughter to see this movie and I wasn't impressed by it, to tell you the truth. It was very dreary and hard to understand from a child's point of view. I understand that Pixar was trying to demonstrate what earth would look like, but I really think it should have been made for an older audience. I was really quite disappointed and wouldn't recommend this film to younger children.
  • alisa
I went to see this movie with my overweight mom, and 6 year old sister. Guess what? All three of us loved it, understood it, and recognized it for what it is: a story. If your child can't understand that a story about robots falling in love is make-believe, then either (s)he is too young, or you are not doing a very good job of teaching your child about the line between the real and the unreal. Also, since when is Anti-Hitler propoganda a BAD thing? Really. That doesn't seem to help your argument. Just because a film or any other work of art displays an opinion, does not mean that it is a propoganda piece. No, Pixar is not funded by environmentalists, and no, the government had nothing to do with the making of this film (and considering the agenda of our current administration, if they had had any input, people like you would be praising this film to the heavens).

Besides, what the movie was saying was not "fat people are bad, and consumption on any level is bad" but that "this little robot here is in touch with what gives humans their humanity (namely, love, but also a joy in working, dancing, thinking, and taking part in the world around us, and a love of nature). These humans, by contrast, stuck in a spaceship for 700 years, no longer are. This little robot can help the people LIVE their lives by showing them the way to do all those things, to grow into that kind of humanity."

Tell me, what is wrong with that? And if my six year old sister, and my overweight mom could see that, why can't you?
  • Jay
I have to agree with 790 - the trailers just don't do a thing for me and I have no desire to see it.
  • Mari
Beautiful film. Adorable characters. Pixar's BEST so far.
Went to see it with a couple of overweight friends, & their younger brothers & sisters. We all got it & we all loved it. Every single second of it. I would go & see it again! that's how much it was gr8.
Recommend it to anyone who is up for a good time.
Im 18 & i would go buy the DVD, the WALL-E toys haha,,,if i c them in store. Totally AH-MAi-ZinG.
FYI, the movie is a great work,,,design & everything is totally awesome. SuperB. & the lack of dialogue adds so much to the movie. Even though there was no dialogue,,, (apart from 'eve' & 'wall-e'), the movie was still very interesting,,,u know? that's how gr8 it was.
