On June 5th, reshoots are scheduled to begin in Los Angeles on Where the Wild Things Are, director Spike Jonze’s borderline infamous adaptation of the classic, visceral and delightfully weird children’s book by Maurice Sendak. Jonze’s mission? Stop the nation’s emo kids (and parents) from crying and having vewey scary nightmares.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the reshoots, as ordered by Warner Bros., will continue for the duration of June, and casting calls for stand-ins are apparently happening as well. We recently tried to send out a Slashfilm Scanner to read Spike Jonze’s mind at a hip cafe in order to figure out the severity of the reshoots, but alas, the scanner’s head exploded all over Kirsten Dunst’s tank top/dangling cigarette.

Recently, Jonze’s film has received “everything is cool, I’d go see it” endorsements from actor/Wild Thing Tom Noonan and the film’s assistant editor James Haygood. Noonan told Cinematical during Cannes that not only was Jonze “perfect” for the job, but that Sendak was very hands-on and candid…

“Maurice Sendak was involved. We’d do these video conferences with him where he’d be like, ‘if you can’t be children, don’t be in the fucking movie.’ He’d say, ‘I want to see children. I don’t know any adults who are able to be children,’ and he’d give us these pep talks where he’d say, ‘don’t do what you always do, do what you’ve always needed to do.”

We’ll keep you posted as we learn/hear more. At this point, who knows how this will turn out.

I guess it hasn't been a good month creatively for people with the last name Jones. Anyways, that picture is pretty much the most precious thing I've ever seen.

These a bit of info in the latest empire magazine about critics seeing the test screening and that it was all good, apparently the dark feel is about as dark as willy wonka, so its fine, and that the reshoots are for additional photography or something (sounds suss). I'm hoping for the best anyway

At this point, I'll be happy if we at least get an original directors cut with the DVD. Whatever the reshoots are, I just wanna see spike's version someday, it doesnt even have to be in the theater - though it is a bummer to hear about all the drama.

    @ orange cinema

Yeah. Basically, when we're all watching the flick, we'll be thinking the same thing...which sucks.
  • When is this movie going to come out? Seriously? Hasn't Jonze been working on this damn thing for like the last 3 years? Is this going to be the next "Avatar"?

Jonze’s mission? Stop the nation’s emo kids (and parents) from crying and having vewey scary nightmares.

Dude, don't use the word "emo" if you don't know what it means. Don't get me wrong - I hate emo music as much as the next guy - but you should figure out what it means.
  • Wow
You're kind of lame, aren't you? "Dude, like, you don't even know what 'emo' means?" oh, enlighten us. i'd love to hear your perfect and concise definition of the word emo--a word that is used to describe an abstract and ever-shifting scene. Tell us what this prime example of group-think embodies. What are its unchanging, core values? Pretend that 'what is emo' is not geographically contingent. Pretend that its use does not vary according to the speaker's age, his class, his music interests, his job. You're kind of lame, aren't you?

when will studios learn that forcing directors to change their artistic vision never work out for the better?
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ Ryan

I am framing this comment in gold and stapling diamonds to it. Thank you.
  • psst. It's Tom Noonan, not Tim.

While all this forced reshooting is irritating and the perfect example of backward Hollywood test audience driven filmmaking, I still trust Jonze enough to create a great movie, even in spite of studio meddling. Thanks for keeping the updates coming!
  • Emmanuel Munoz
I just want to see the movie that Jonze made, not the studio.
  • edward
the studio wouldn't re configure or cut anything tremendous. i've heard studios have a great amount of respect for jonze's talent, and noonan did say that it was just additional photography.

it surely won't be an alien3, thats for sure. the studios aren't that stupid.
and isn't warner bros. one of the finest creatively respected studios out there?
they let kubrick have his way with anything! haha
  • edward

I just want a "wild thing" suit. It would be much fun in the neighborhood.

Am I the only person that never read these books as a kid?
Call me when they start production on Go, Dog! Go!

    Warner lost one paying moviegoer.

As i recall as kids i used to watch The Dark Crystal, Legend, Watership Down and seeing the puppet Rudolph the red nose reindeer, the abominale snowman. If i spelt that right?

And they are crying over Jones work, but what about what we watch back in the day. Im sorry but this wont be as scary and dark as the Dark Crystal "Im talking Generation wise"
  • Hunter Stephenson
    @ edward

    Will do. Thanks.
  • Joe
Well, I have no desire to see this movie if they reshoot what seems to be a very good cut of the film.

    Fuckers.
