2008 MTV Movie Awards Winners

MTV Movie Awards 2008Here is a listing of the winners from tonight’s 2008 MTV Movie Awards. I would comment but I’m not sure anyone really takes this award show seriously. I mean, “Best Movie of the Summer So Far”? Seriously!

Breakthrough Performance: Zac Efron in Hairspray
Best Female Performance:
Ellen Page in Juno
Best Comedic Performance:
Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End
Best Fight: Sean Faris and Cam Gigandet in Never Back Down
Best Villain: Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Best Summer Movie So Far: Iron Man
Tom Cruise presented Adam Sandler with the MTV Generation Award

  • The last time I enjoyed the MTV Movie Awards was when Sean William Scott and Justin Timerblake were the hosts.

Is Johnny Depp always so weird when he accepts awards?
  • Casey
Their credibility went out the window with the first award on the list. Transformer, best anything? Really?
  • Afro
    Transformers? Seriously?
I was thinking Juno had a chance at that, since it seems thats what the MTV crowd was going for.

Either way the faith in my generation is squat low now.
On Top of that, No Country for Old men was actually recognized and nominated for Best villain, why really bother?
  • Emmanuel Munoz
Anything that gives "Step up 2: The streets" an award has lost all credibility. i wont even comment on how all of those awards are the biggest crap i have ever seen.

    I fear for my generation.
  • Hunter Stephenson
    What is MTV?
  • Joe
sweeney todd wasn't a villain he was a hero wtf
  • dvq
as much as i loved Iron Man, im pretty sure TDK will destroy it, so that "best summer movie so far" is bullshit (obviously).
  • ev
i agree.. complete crap.. step up and never back down... i had to leave half way through because i was so disappointed that people applaud pathetic movies like that. they should go ahead and stop making mtv awards because i for one will never watch it again
  • ev
i was hoping for some sort of the dark knight special or heath tribute. but just didnt enjoy anyhting
  • september11th
    lol
  • Captain Awesome
Anyone who even thinks MTV has any credibility left is delusional. Just like music, they're the last place I would take music, much less film advice from.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End" should have been voted comedy of the year.
  • @Captain Awesome - I'm gonna have to disagree with the last part of your statement. Rambo should have been voted comedy of the Century (sorry, I just saw it on DVD last night and laughed my ass off)

Anyway, I lost my faith in MTV a long time ago, so I'm not suprised that the awards turned out the way they did.

I love when a film is awarded or pimped accordingly right after the commercial for that film. Was it last year that the show was sponsored by Transformers and, believe it or not, Transformers won the award for "most anticipated Summer movie" or some such crap? It would seem that MTV is still paying on that deal, huh?
  • Ryan
Say what you will, it was a funny time.
    That's all I watched for.
  • jfive
Ill admit when i was in highschool i wacthed a few mtv award shows but seriously people actually watch this crap now? Step up two? Transformers? lol
  • 790
Hunter, Mtv is a network of tv hacks that think they have a grip on our reality when in fact their completly out of touch.
They suck and anyone that's ever worked for them will tell you there the biggest group of amitures out there.
  • Tom
People are acting as if this is something new. Since when has MTV movie awards, or anything MTV for that matter had any credibility?
  • 790
    Thank you Tom!
  • duca
What I find great about the MTV awards is that the nominations were announced BEFORE a lot of the movies even hit theatres. What's up with that? Do they have a magic 8 ball? Because pay to be on the list and that's the end of the story.

...On that note there have been some pretty damn good sketches throughout the years. Jack Black Spiderman anyone? LOL
  • GregoryV
jackie chan and jet li lost best fight or were they even nominated?
  • YoungZe
@Matty H-C: What was so funny about Rambo?
  • Rob
Transformers was distributed by Paramount. It isn't surprising it won Best Picture. The MTV Movie awards is a long comercial for Viacom products.

On a side note, the show itself was the most entertaining in years (of what I saw of it), but that isn't really setting the bar high.
  • chromey
I'm with Ryan. I only watch, and have ever watched, this show for the comedy segments and this year they delivered on that front. Mike Myers is a genius and the "viral video" was hilarious. This is what Tivo was invented for people. I fast forwarded through %80 of the show.

And to the people bitching these awards lack credibility... what weird universe do you live in where the MTV movie awards has ever had this "credibility" you speak of? Seriously, complaining about that just makes you look ridiculous.
  • This is the biggest BS ever. And to everyone that says MTV has no credibility, true, in the world of adults and film lovers. But unfortunately it has INCREDIBLE sway on the younger generation. This really is dismal. No Country, 3:10 to Yuma, Blood, Once, Zodiac, American Gangster, etc etc. Transformers is near the bottom of the barrel. Even for MTV this is bad. I would have thought Juno would be more up their alley, what with the hipster soundtrack and all. How do those people live with themselves.
  • Tom
I refuse to believe that even teens can swallow the MTV awards up. I think MTV has no idea what the hell they are doing
  • Chimaera
About that credibility...here's a bit from Larry Carroll over at MTV reporting from the after party.

"I'm taking it in stride," "Twilight" star Robert Pattinson said, somewhat amazed that his still-seven-months-away movie unveiled an action clip that overshadowed many of the evening's biggest stars.

Yeah, that's right. That clip overshadowed bigger stars. I want what he is smoking.
