It appears that The Weinstein Co has brought director Kyle Newman back on board to make the final cut of Fanboys. The New York Times ran a story a couple weeks back about Microsoft. Newman worked on a short film / advertisement for the Redmond-based software company. Apparently no one in the movie sector read the article because buried somewhere in the advertising section. Thankfully /Film reader Iron Monger spotted it, because hidden inside the article was a one-line quote from Kyle himself:
“I have been brought back into the editing room to work on a final version,” Kyle said. “All the key people are back. That’s all good.”
So there you have it. It appears that Kyle Newman has officially returned to work on a final version of the film. No word on if the movie will get a theatrical release or go direct-to-dvd. Although if I were The Weinstein Co, I’d at least test the waters with a limited theatrical release. A fanbase is certainly there, but can TWC convince them to see it after all the shit they pulled?

The real shame is that they were going to steal the Phantom Menace! Imagine the poor kid who was dying? Having to go out with Phantom as his last SW film, no Clones, or Sith…just Jar-Jar. If I were them I would have lied to the guy, and told him I couldn’t get a copy, and give him the dignity of having Jedi be the last SW film he’d see.

I think this movie may still be enjoyable and should go out to theaters. I mean, ok, TWC has no problem releasing nonsense like Derailed, Doogal, Pulse etc but is balking at a uniqueish idea? Dumb.
On a non-related note, that’s not a very flattering pic of Kyle Newman who falls on the side of good-looking.

I was fairly unimpressed by the Microsoft short, except for the action sequences, which were done well. The rest seemed like a poor execution to me, breaking the line for no apparent reason, things like that.
Newman back in the editing room seems like a PR ploy more than anything else. Hopefully this story will end well!

all this edit and re-edit….it just seems like it would be easier to just release the first cut, no one will see this other then fanboys/star wars fans anyways. It’s not like a re-cut is going to get the non sci/fi/comics crowd in the door.

The fan base will no doubt ALL watch it at some point. Whether they will pay to see it is another question.

GOSH.. Why ppl care so much about this movie?? It’s just another comedy!! Or cuz “Star Wars” is part of the plot??
But still its not like an awaited comic-book adaptation or a touching-well-written-award-worthy drama!!!

I searched all the movie sites…but no reports about Kyle Newman’s earlier movie Gimme Gimme Gumm Gang. What’s up with that?

I was one of the lucky couple of thousand people who saw Kyle Newman’s rough cut of Fanboys at Star Wars Celebration Europe last year. I loved it! It was warm, funny, extremely well done, and undoubtedly would appeal even to non-Star Wars fans. The cancer-plot is vital to the spirit of the film, and the fact that the characters were aiming to see “The Phantom Menace,” and experience the full joy of Jar Jar Binks, served as an enjoyable irony throughout the whole film. The warm applause Kyle received from the entire audience in London following the roughcut premiere testifies that everyone present at that time agrees with me. I am very excited to be able to see this original version again later this year!

I think this movie will rock - all my friends and business partners talked about it after seeing preview. I was Kyle’s roomate in NYU and could tell you the man is a genious and they would be crazy to not let him finish movie - Newman. I’m tired of yelling out Sarah Jessica’s Parker’s name.
