Star Tours 2.0 Confirmed

Star Tours

The rumors appear to be true afterall, Disney is giving Star Tours an overhaul. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull computer graphics artist Hayden Landis told CNet that he has moved onto “another nostalgia-oriented project – a redo of the Star Tours ride at Disneyland.”

I remember when the Star Tours ride first opened in 1987 (am I old?) they had a ABC Magical World of Disney special which focused on the attraction. I remember them promising at the time that the ride and film set-up would allow them to add new destinations , basically entirely new rides. And rumor had it that they would keep all the films in rotation on the various space crafts on the attraction. The flight information board utilized in the line area promises “forthcoming adventures to Hoth, Tatooine, and Dagobah” and displays the text “Soon Endor Won’t Be The End-All”. Twenty years have passed, and everything is pretty much the same as it was when the opened the attraction in 1987.

Star Tours

Last year Anthony Daniels, the actor who plays C3PO in the series, let it slip that he recorded some voice tracks for a new version of Star Tours. And since nothing ever came of it, people assumed that Daniels may have just recorded some updated voice tracks for the animatronic character in the pre-boarding sequence of the line. But with a new ride being worked on one must wonder how much of the old attraction will actually be changed. It is unknown if they will update the technology employed in the ride, although you would assume that they would. Digital displays could allow for a 3D experience. But what I’m worried about most is the story of the ride itself.

Supposedly at Star Wars Celebration III, George Lucas made mention of a Star Tours sequel which would be prequel-oriented. And early concept was supposedly based on the Pod Racer sequence in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, featuring a glasses-free 3-D High Definition screen and improved motion simulator. But until this day that has remained strictly a rumor. I’m not really interested in going to Naboo, Mos Espa, Coruscant or any of the locations from the prequel trilogy. I want to visit the locations and characters from the original trilogy. Plus its much more interesting with the Empire involved. Either way, I’m sure we won’t find out details on the new ride for a good while.

Discuss: Where would you want Star Tours to take you?

I hope this is true, this would be totally awesome. If they could keep the same Star Tours feel, and just update it, it would be incredible...all we need now is the return of Captain EO and then we are all set.
  • About fricken time!!! I've been saying that for years. You can only sit through the same video so many times.

Of course, all of this will happen after I decide to not renew my annual passport with my kids, right? I always thought, "how hard would it be (with today's technology) to creat one or two new travels for this ride?" Guess it was harder than I thought. Even though the ride is a bit dull, it's the only ride in the park that is consistently 15 minute wait time and the fastest ride to get on. I really only ride it as a time pass to get to the SW gift shop.

They should take the ride in a new direction. Perhaps it starts on Jabba's barge. But mid way thru, falls into the Sarlacc pit. Once inside, it fights its way to the center where it activates a few thermal detonators and distroys the thing. Finally escaping at the end, with the help of the bounty hunter Dengar, the ride continues thru the galaxy in search of Han Solo.

Sounds good to me. Better that than any garbage lucas can come up with for a prequel ride.

A better screen would be great. Last time I was there, it just looked too much like an old projection screen one would find in their grandma's basement.

    3-D WOULD BE AWESOME.

I think Coruscant would be fun as would Endor.

Racing the Anakin go-pod, not so much.

"I remember when the Star Tours ride first opened in 1987 (am I old?)"

Um, I remember when Star Wars came out. Saw it in the drive-in with my parents. So, no, you're not old...yet. LOL!

Geeze...its about time. I remember that ride BLOWING MY MIND when I it came out (keep in mind I was 10 years old). I've been on the ride dozens of times since then and am bewildered as to why the original film for the ride hasn't been transferred to digital and souped up a bit. I mean, it wouldn't cost too much other than the rights from Lucasfilm to make the modifications. A new Star Tours ride would be sweet, but I hope they update the original and keep it in rotation. It still holds its weight and would be even nicer with a good update.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull computer graphics artist Hayden Landis told CNet that he has moved onto... a redo of the Star Tours ride at Disneyland.”

So...it's going to look really fake and ridiculous?

*pulls on hair* I remember when Yoda was born, so yeah...a little bit older...a little longer. *stares around, pulls on hair*

    re: "Indiana Jones graphics artist."

Actually, I think that means we're going to see digi-Gophers on Star Tours....

Oh man! I went to Disneyland once when I was a kid and this was my favorite ride! I would love to go back to Disneyland just to ride the sequel!

I think Coruscant could be interesting if it took advantage of flying down vertically through layers of traffic. I think for that destination the story should revolve around some kind of chase. I hope it focuses more on the original trilogy though. I think podracing was a given, it just wouldn't make much sense for a shuttle full of passengers to partake in a podrace. They could go Return of the Jedi on one of them and fly through a death star, then escape it just as it explodes.

I would hate to see Star Tours changed...I don't care how many times Captain Rex accidentally steers that leisurely flight to Endor into a combat zone, it will never get old. The ride is exceptionally well done and continues to be a classic. It would be an absolute travesty to revamp the attraction with a prequel trilogy storyline.

I think that they should have this thing but also keep the old one. Now what I am worried about is what is to become of the thing that had the people mover and rocket rods ride? you know the huge thing like between star tours and astro blasters? what is to become of that?
  • Matt A
What's wrong with all of you? The original ride is classic. Why not keep the original with the other three simulators being different locales. If they update the first one with graphics and nonsense, it'll be the same fiasco as with the Special Edition Star Wars movies. Yes, they looked cool, but stuff was added that just looked stupid and completely unnecessary. Why not keep one simulator running the classic ride, with maybe an updated projection screen and restored graphics or something, forget 3-D. It's a ride in a space ship. I don't know about you, but when Luke is flying his X-wing through the Death Star Trench, laser blasts and TIE fighters weren't jumping into his cockpit at him. They were seen through the glass. You don't need 3-D to have an entertaining experience, all you need is some variety. I think a trip to the Battle of Hoth would be awesome, or a trip to Tatooine and going through Begar's Canyon or taking on the 2nd Death Star with Landom, you could even fly to Geonosia to fight on Geonosis or above Coruscant while Anaking and Obi-wan rescue Chancellor Palpatine or something. But forget 3-D, it's not Star Wars. The old ride is a classic, it shouldn't be completely tossed. Stick to the spaceship feel. It's still awesome to imagine being in a Star Ship and going through Hyperspace, no matter how old you are.

Hey Chris, you know what would be awesome? Is if that old People mover/rocket rods ride was made into a speederbike type of ride, now that would be a cool idea in my opinion, or hey, even a podracing ride. Although, Disney would probably never make two star wars rides in the same park, but hey, it'd be cool.
  • Chris
Yeah that would be awesome but I just want to know what will become of that matt. will that actually happen what you say or will there be something else. I mean the speederbike Idea sounds cool but have you seen a speederbike with like 20 seats. I dont know it could or it couldnt. we will never know.

I also hope they will be able to have it were the wheelchair can be lock into place with out getting out of it. I stop riding it because they (Cast Members) started to have wheelchair users transfer twice in order to get on the ride.
