spiderman_3_movie_image_tobey_maguire.jpg

Two days ago, we delved into rumors that the next Peter Parker could be played by the Macguire-esque Patrick Fugit (Almost Famous, Wristcutters) or the younger, spunkish Michael Angarano (Sky High). Well, Sony wants to put some Internet skywriting out there and fast. Their message is: “Tobey Maguire you’re the best, you’re our Spider-Man!…right?” Sony’s head of media relations tells IESB

“No one is being considered for the role but Tobey. Period.”

IESB adds that numerous inside sources and agencies have confirmed that no actor in Hollywood or Bollywood has been contacted for Peter Parker. Prior to this, CHUD caught word from a producer on Fugit’s latest film who said the rumor was totally bunk. Let’s all electric slide back to square one, okay?

This premature casting drama went supernova because a higher-up at Marvel speculated that Sony will have Spider-Man 4 in theaters in 2010, which supported rumors that Sony wants to shoot Spider-Man 4 and Spider-Man 5 back-to-back. Whatever Sony says, there is movement happening with the franchise, so a little interwebs madness is expected, healthier than eating bacon even.

I don’t think Fugit would be (have been) an unwise choice, he’s talented, but he shares Macguire’s sleepy, melancholy style to a fault. Peter wonders why Shia Labeouf is not in the mix—he’s probably my first choice for Parker, and I really hope they bring in a new director as well. What’s interesting is that the fan outrage at these Macguire replacement rumors is not really there, which is odd. And fanboy hindsight on Spider-Man 3 seems to grow dimmer as time passes. More on the next Spidey flick(s) as it develops.

Discuss: Will Tobey Maguire be back you think? Do you think the word is out to other actors? Ideally, what do you want to see happen?

Whew. I can finally sleep at night.

For a second there, I was worried they were going to get another mediocre actor to take the role.

to be honest, i really hope he doesnt come back.
generally, i despise recasts. But i would really like to see a spiderman reboot; i hope they do one in my lifetime.

The third movie was awful. It had some amazing action sequences, but the whole thing was a bastardization of source material. It should have been JUST SANDMAN or JUST VENOM. New Goblin need not Apply.

Multiple Villains is a bad idea in general, unless they do it more like Iron Man, (Mandrin/Obidiah) or Batman Begins (ras/scarecrow) where there is one primary villain, and the other is just an unrelated support character for a subplot.

Anyway, While i absolutely loved Spiderman 1&2, ive always wanted them to recast Peter and Mary Jane.

if you recall, Jake Gyllenhaal was very nearly cast and there were rumors that they again considered casting when Tobey had hurt himself early in filming of the second movie.

he wont be doing it now because of Prince of Persia, but that doesnt mean that Tobey shoulnt be recast.

Tobey’s got like a thousand projects in the works right now. Plus, it would be a wise career move for him to step down or else be typecast for life.

i dont care who Spider-Man is as long as the story is better that Spidey 3.
    that film stunk!
    Venom stunk
    New Goblin Stunk
    Sandman Stunk
    Gwen Stunk
    “hipster” Peter stunk
who cares how good the effects were if the story is lame?

    @Hunter
Don’t you find it weird that Sony actually shot down this little rumor? They seemed panicked by it. Normally studios don’t comment on stupid casting rumors that float around the net.

  6. Gravatar

i don’t see why maguire wouldn’t take it; it’s basically at minimum $40 million in the bank for the two films…plus he already has been typecast as spiderman, so what difference would that make?

since they would be filming back to back, it would also free up future schedule for working on other projects

    @ john

I co-sign everyone one of your statements.

Ugh I have so many mixed feelings. I actually like the cast now, I think you could tell in there interviews they really weren’t into part 3 and it will take a perfect script to get them 2 sign. As long as they take the characters back 2 how they were in spiderman 1 then it might be ok.

i’ll give ya all the outrage you need hunter: GODDAMIT PLEASE KEEP TOBEY!!! seriously, i’d like him & raimi to redeem themselves for sm3. i think 4&5 back to back like that would be perfect. just regain the focus and get a good story. the raindrops song worked in part 2, but no more musicals halfway through. one or two badguys, pathos, jokes, love, action - everything we know spider-man can be. if they did 4&5 then bowed out, i’d be ok, but i really want those guys to remind us all that they are the best at this comic book movie thingy. (though nolan & bale are just as good)

    @ gah

Yeah, hence the “skywriting.” You don’t want to piss off talent with this much power. I don’t think Macguire will be back, and if he does, it will be for the wrong reasons.

    Ok…first of all…

    IS TOBEY MAGUIREEEEE!!!!

    “MAAAAAAAGUIREEE” NO “MCCCCGUIRE..”

    OMFG…LIKE 10 YEARS LATER…AND PEOPLE STILL MAKE THAT MISTAKE…

    Oh…

God for Tobey and Sony…smart move ;)

  12. Gravatar

    good*

  13. Gravatar

Move on… Cast younger and make as little reference to the previous films as possible. The first spider-man story arc is done with, now end it with dignity.

  14. Gravatar

    Of course…..NS!
I’ve only been saying this for months

Tobey isn’t typecast as Spider Man, he’s typecast as a great actor.

    Big fan!
    Go Tobey,!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Gravatar

i just don’t want them to rushanother spider-man film into production because the can…they should wait for a whie, let marvel focus o their other films, andif they’re re-casting they shouldn’t make anytng back to bck in case there’s a george lzenby scenario

Kadeity Said “to be honest, i really hope he doesnt come back.

Oh really, come on as I said in my previous post about the whole if they replace him etc, another reboot of any other re-make of the film is just getting silly, this re-boot crap has goto stop, otherwise we will start seeing Aliens, Blade Runner, and god only knows what else just re-made because they cant think of anything else better to do, theres enough bad guys and plot lines to be taken from the comics to make enough films.

  17. Gravatar

Tobey Maguire is just great for the role
    and a wonderful actor
    I hope they keep him
spiderman 3 was just too silly

  18. Gravatar

    IDEA FOR SPIDER-MAN 5

crossover wiv iron man, tony stark cameo who when talkin to spidey/peter…convinces him to show himself to the public

like in the civil war…gd idea?

  19. Gravatar

    Keep Tobey!

  20. Gravatar

You know what they say, “Garbage in , Garbage out”. No amount of special FX will make the last story better.

They should just move on from Spidey and re-approach when we dont really care about him anymore. Then it will be fresh, not just a redux.

tobey was a poor choice as was Kirsten .

  21. Gravatar

i think tobey magurie should come back for begin spiderman beacase he has been all spiderman movies beacase he’s spiderman. He allways take pictures about spiderman he can’t give up for begin spiderman with great power.Comes great responsibility.
He does look like peter parker so that’s the truth of peter parker.

  22. Gravatar

If kristin Dust is not in spider-man 4,5 and 6 I would be very upset. And I don’t think it would sell very good.If you take a charecter from a well know show it just meses it up.
