Sometimes I get to write about some really cool films like The Dark Knight, or a small little indie film which I’ve fallen in love with like American Teen, and then every once in a while I have to write about a romantic comedy. And it’s not that I hate romantic comedies, because I’m not that type of guy. I just find it hard to write about them without making some kind of snide remark or negative statement about the type of people who are excited to see these type of movies. This sometimes leads to a statement which could potentially be labled sexist, and eventually leads to the few female readers we have calling me out in the comments. So I’m going to try to stick to the facts on this one.
So what can I say about the movie trailer for He’s Just Not That Into You? Well, the film has a wonderful cast: Jennifer Connelly, Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson, Justin Long, Ben Affleck, Kevin Connolly (Entourage) (notice how I excluded Jennifer Aniston even though she’s clearly one of the leads? That was on purpose. I don’t like her very much. She is the opposite of wonderful). What else? The film was directed by Ken Kwapis, the guy responsible for The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, License to Wed, and Dunston Checks In. And the writers of the book that the film is based on were consultant and story editors on Sex and the City, which might give you a good idea what to expect. That said, enjoy the trailer below (or you could always watch that kick ass Russian Wanted trailer again… yeah, that sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it?).
Watch the trailer in High Definition on AOL.com. He’s Just Not That Into You hits theaters on October 24th 2008.

dont forget that the writer your talking about,
the guy who wrote the book the movie is based on, and is a consultant on Sex&theCity is also the standup comedian Greg Behrendt.
if you get a glance at his standup i think youll be a little more optimisic about the movie. It has the potential to be Hilarious.

Okay, call me a sap but I actually read the book and found it mildly entertaining, which is what this movie looks like. A fun, get your girlfriends and rag on guys kind of movie, lol. Sorry, I know, I just shot my credibility out the window but I am conflicted with that double X chromosome and a good chic flick gets me every time :P Not saying that it will be good, since this is the first I’ve heard of it but I liked the book enough to want to hear/see more about it *shrugs shoulders*.
*shudders* The insanity has passed *chill down my spine* I think I’ll go watch that Russian Wanted trailer now. Thanks for the advice Peter.

Seems to be very anti-romantic comedy bullshit. Count me in.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:06 pm
Love the trailer but not including Jennifer Aniston as one of the leads because the author does not like her? Is this a movie site or what?
May 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Dude, Jennifer Aniston is way more tolerable than Drew Barrymore. At least Aniston doesn’t have a speech impediment.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Women sure are stupid!
May 28th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
It looks decent.

haha gold

C’mon now, Peter. You dislike Jennifer Anniston? Don’t you have any love for “Along Came Polly,” “Bruce Almighty,” “Derailed,” “The Break-Up”, “The Object of My Affection,” “The Thin Pink Line,” “Leprecaun,” or…..hm…..what was my point again?
May 28th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I agree, Drew Barrymore is intolerable. I’ll watch this though, doesn’t look that bad and has a good cast.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:14 pm
I found this statement to be absolutely hysterical, “She is the opposite of wonderful.”
And I have to say that despite my penchant for “dude movies” I have to balance it all out with crap like this.
Thanks for remembering the little people (with boobs), Peter!

I’m not saying Jennifer Aniston should be described as a wonderful actress, but I was taken back that you chose to omit her and include Ben Affleck. I can’t stand that guy, but then again this isn’t a movie I’ll see anyway so I guess it’s fine that he’s in it.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
I consider Peter a filter. Through this filter good movies pass untouched and crummy looking movies get their just desserts. Omit away, Peter. Omit away.
That said I’ll probably end up seeing this.
May 28th, 2008 at 1:50 pm
Awesome. I’ll go see it while you’re at home trying to stay awake through Pathfinder 2.

I’m more of a “Snow Day” kinda guy myself…

Jennifer Aniston>>>Drew Barrymore

i wish peter had read more about the writer of the book before forming an opinion, i think he would actually like the movie.
May 28th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
personally, i’m sick of this over-marketedness of this ‘book’.
BUT maybe it’ll make a great -sit-on-the-couch-and-watch-while- eating-ice-cream- movie…i’ll wait for the DVD.
OH and poor jen…but..yeah.

This looks better than Indy 4.

I’m so going to rent this towards the end of 2009 or the beginning of 2010. Count on it Netflix!

How can anyone hate Jennifer Aniston? She’s in one of the greatest fanboy fan films of all time - uh, Office Space…heard of it? Also “The Good Girl” and “She’s the One”? These are great movies - don’t understand the un-love here.
Also, it’s great to see Kevin Connolly in a real movie.

No mention of Ginnifer Goodwin in the post? That makes me sad.
May 28th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
Funny enough, the title of the movie is a direct like from Sex and the City. I happened to watch this episode during the weekend, not like I had it stored in my mind. Berger says it to Miranda when Carrie takes him to meet the friends for the first time. Had you not mentioned them, I would’ve said someone was stealing!
May 28th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
@Saki - It’s actually the title of a book that was popular several years ago, and did not originate with Sex and the City. Look it up.

@peter
“and then every once in a while I have to write about a romantic comedy”
Have to?
May 28th, 2008 at 8:28 pm
It’s almost like they are remaking St. Elmo’s Fire.
May 29th, 2008 at 12:33 am
that last phone call was hilarious. waiting for.
May 29th, 2008 at 5:19 am
Hey Peter, you forgot to mention Bradley Cooper who’s very cool too. I will see this movie for one reason, the cast is amazing except Jennifer Aniston who i hate too.
May 29th, 2008 at 5:51 am
Looks like a fun film!!! I’ll definitely be there because of Jennifer Aniston-one of my favs…read a few snippets from people who have seen the rough cut. They all said Justin Long is great in it and both Jennifers were excellent. Can’t wait to see all the couples in action!!!Loved the book!

looks like something I can take my wife out too…

please remember this site is about movies, not books.

Romantic Comedies are life draining. I endure them for as long as I can when my wife wants to watch them at home. But most the time I walk away and work on the computer.
Greg Behrendt is not funny. I saw his stand up on Comedy Central and I thought it was not as hip as he thought it was. I also have seen his day time Ricki Lake type show. He looks like a Douche on that show. Using words like “dude” and “bro” does not make you hip. I didn’t read the book, so I have no idea how it translates to others.

I think it’s prejudice that you’re assuming that if you’re a women then you like or get excited about romantic comedies. Or that if women like a film it makes it bad.
Surely a good film is a good film regardless of genre. If you’re going to start being a genre snob then what kind of critic are you?
I think Wanted looks awesome, I think the Dark Knight looks awesome but I also appreciate a fun, upbeat romantic comedy that provides a bit of escapism and makes us think even if it’s just for a few minutes after the film that hey maybe there’s a guy out there who isn’t a complete asshole.
