Capcom Characters

Japanese-based video game developer/publisher Capcom has revealed it plans to make a new batch of horrible video game movie adaptations. Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto says he hopes his company will revitalize video game movies just as Marvel has revitalized comic book movies.

“We are in the process of working out contracts for several offers we received at the Cannes Film Festival last week and hope to make an announcement soon,” Tsujimoto told Bloomberg. “If realised, the projects will have a big impact on the game and movie industries.”

Previous Capcom game to movie releases include the Resident Evil Series, Street Fighter, the 1994 Street Fighter movie, and the prequel/reboot Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which is currently in production at Fox. Lets take a look at a few potential franchise titles that Capcom might be looking to bring to the big screen:

Devil May Cry: A movie adaptation of optioned by GAGA Communications in December 2006, but that option may have run out. The story follows Dante, a mercenary dedicated to exterminating demons, a group which was responsible for the death of his mother and corrupting his brother.

More Street Fighter Spin-Offs: Please lets hope not!

Ghouls ‘n Ghosts: The story of the original game followed a knight named Arthur who had defeat a number of undead and demonic creatures in his quest to restore souls stolen by Lucifer. One of the souls is of his bride, Princess Prin Prin. As Arthur advanced through a series of eerie levels, he picked up a variety of weapons and armor to help him in his quest.

Bionic Commando:
Essentially if GI Joe were just about a single soldier. The story follows a super soldier equipped with a bionic arm featuring a grappling gun.

Another Resident Evil Movie:
I’m sure Paul W.S. Anderson is waiting for the phone call.

Dead Rising: Essentially a 80% rip-off of Dawn of the Dead. A photojournalist named Frank West ends up trapped in a shopping mall infested with zombies.

Steel Battalion:
With the success of Transformers, could Hollywood be interested in a Mech movie? Players controlled bipedal walking weapons platforms called vertical tanks (or VTs) in combat, assault, support, and scout missions.

Mega Man: Mega Man has appeared in over 100 games over the past two decades, and is responsible for more sales revenue than both of Capcom’s next leading franchises (Street Fighter and Resident Evil) combined. Set in the year 200X, master designer Dr. Thomas Light  worked to create a humanoid robot who could demonstrate an advanced artificial intelligence program that would allow it to make decisions based on vague commands and directions. With the success of these two test-type robots, Light designed and built six production-type robots. Dr. Albert W. Wily, a colleague at that time and future rival, stole the robots and seized control of the city. Dr. Light converted his current lab assistant into a fighting robot named Mega Man. This story probably has the most potential as a big screen story, but more likely in the computer animated realm.

Discuss: What Capcom video game would you like to see on the big screen?

Ughn please, leave DMC alone. The Anime is so bad i don't even want to know what the movie is like.
  • Schu
    Strider Hiryu.

They already have an interesting looking 3D animated Resident Evil movie coming out that has nothing to do with Anderson thank god.

Ghouls ‘n Ghosts could be a bit like the Princess Bride if they do it right. Campy. Needs boxer shorts.
  • orange cinema
-i know i'm alone here, but my brother and i loved the resident evil series and i'd gladly take another. were they great films? No. were they fun films? Yes!

and as far as the others, i think it's like any film, if it gets the right treatment and care, anything could be great - especially mega man. in the hands of someone like danny boyle, mega man could be a really sick film - and i know it won't happen, but there are people not as big as him who could make a great/unique film out of that story. imagine ghouls and ghosts in peter jacksons hands - and again, i know it'll never happen, but that would be really spectacular.

if that rumor about pt anderson doing metal gear is true, he could open the door for other great directors to want to do video games, the way raimi & others made comic movies cool.
  • charles
We'll just have to wait and see.
  • Tendrillar
You're so negative and Judgmental sometimes Peter. TRUE most if not all comic movies suck, but if you stick with that mentality it might extend to the way to see other films squashing their potential in your eyes. It just doesn't seem healthy to me. Don't become a bitter internet critic guy.

A mega Man movie would be great, I think all these properties could be great if handled sensibly. Especially Street Fighter.

You usually bring the goods on movie news so thanks for that. But, sometimes it's too much negativity for me.
  • Pudmuffin
That seems to be a new theme at slashfilm -- peppering articles with a suffocating and unnecessary negativity. It's the new CHUD!
  • Ghost
Seriously how do you know they'll be crappy? I mean these are some great games. And yeah I hated the RE series, and SF, but there's a slew of good games out there to be made well it just depends on the writers, directors, and of course actors they choose. We want informative blogs not biased ones...
  • Sauce
Bionic Commando would be fun if for nothing else it was an R rated Rambo/Spiderman hybrid. But...There's no story there so...

    MEGAMAN!!!!!!!
    STAY AWAY FROM THIS ONE,
    WACHOWSKIS!!!!!!!
  • Tendrillar: It's my job to be judgemental. And the fact of the matter is that I havent enjoyed one video game adaptation released to date (that might change with Bioshock). Not only that, but Capcom has a bad track record with the 1990's Street Fighter, and some of those Resident Evil films. But Even I admit, a Mega Man movie would be cool. Unfoutunately I don't think Hollywood would greenlight it live action, and a computer animated film would still be good, but not nearly as cool as a live action film could be.
  • UltraOralox
Just make a Marvel vs. Capcom movie!!!
  • Ghost: Again, we make judgements based on past history. To date, 90% (100% if you ask me) of video game adaptations have sucked. If I learned anything from school it is that history repeats itself. Could things change? Maybe eventually. It will only change when video game adaptations are taken more seriously than another genre film, and attact a-list filmmaker talent. And as I've said in the past, Bioshock and Prince of Persia have the potential to be really cool. Capcom looking for foreign money at Cannes is not a good sign towards quality.
  • Chimaera
I, like Orange Cinema, enjoyed the RE movies but was somewhat disappointed with the last one. I have no problem with them doing movies as long as they do it right but if they are just doing it for the money and not for the love of the product....DON'T DO IT!
  • Only two video game adaptations NEED made, Metal Gear Solid and BioShock.
  • Jojo
All these video games are classics compared to Michael Bays flicks.

    Yes even fucking transshitters.
  • Rob
the problem with most of these movies is that those responsible dont look at the actual quality of content, only the money the game made. There are probably alot of well written games that would work as movies, but they didn't do well so its never gonna happen, but as for those suggested, i would say mega man has the best chance of being successful.
  • Floppy
I'm still pulling for Custer's Revenge to get the big screen treatment. I'm sure Hollywood can get the rights for around 18 cents.
  • M&Co
Oh man - and yet we can't get a Monkey Island or a King's Quest movie? At least those games had stories...
  • 790
I'm pretty sure there doing it for the Yen,, Chimaera

I kinda wish Capcom would stick to video games.
Darkwatch might be a cool film but they would prob get sued by the Ghost Rider folks at Marvel.

If they make a Steel Battalion movie, are the theaters going to provide the massive controllers and foot controls?
And if the film sucks will the Eject button light up?

    Your doing just fine Peter!
Come on people feel the angst!

Haha, awesome! I personally love Mega Man and have been waiting for an adaption, animated or not, Wachowski-mated or not, for some time now. I think it would be both fun for the original fans and could restart the franchise.

Outsold more than Street Fighter AND Resident Evil COMBINED! Now that's a popular guy.
  • dofpp
    Castlevania!
    1. Simon Belmont would be a great lead character,
    2. You can never have too many vampire movies.
    3. If the movie was faithful to the games you could easily turn it into a long running franchise.
  • Tendrillar
It's one thing to be judgmental, but another to be outright negative in my opinion. but it's just that, my opinion. It may be too much for me at times, but who am I to rob you of your fun? The site is great and the updates are more frequent than most others I go to, due mostly to your articles. I'm not trying to tell you how to do your job, I just personally felt I needed to comment. Your candor can be somewhat polarizing.

I love movies and am often very judgmental, but I do try to look at what good might come from the really bad.

The Capcom guys seem to be in it mostly for the money and fame, I doubt they care what kind of films are made from mostly, story-less, game properties.

I think Street Fighter could be a great series and I really hope the new movie is at least decent. I may be going out on a limb here, but the non-Capcom related Doom was pretty fun, although I don't remember a lot of it.

I'm trying to think of more video game movies.....Silent Hill wasn't bad. Well, up till the ending.

Anyway, thanks for the talk back. Look forward to the next debate.

    Word.

    Dofpp, yeah you can,,,
    BloodRayne 2.
  • jimmyjoe
What about Onimusha? I heard they are making that into a movie. a Rival Schools: United By Fate movie would be funny or Saturday Night Slam Masters
  • J. Luna
Mega Man. I was talking about a Mega Man X movie this week! It has a very wide dramatic scope. Two Hundred years after the age of the first mega man the final creation of Dr Light, is uncovered during an archeological dig, Mega Man X. Before the diagnostic is finished (the reason for him being in the capsule) scientist begin to dissect his technology, this leads to a new age of peace for humanity. But as always happens in these movies, all good things must come to an end. Turns out that The inferior replication of X's technology leads to an outbreak of maverick robots. X must stop them and their leaders. On top of this X carries the guilt of his technology being the cause of so much death. It's only when he accepts his inevitable role (good or bad) in the future of Humanity, that he is able to win peace for the the people, and for him self.

Man this story could be so cool. I see so much potential for this story, and of the themes it could explore. It's been a dream of mine to get this one on screen. But sadly I agree with peter. These things tend to suck because of the way these movies treated. Only when the filmmakers, and producers choose to treat the material with respect will we begin to see the same renaissance the super hero films have been enjoying.
  • Adam Ruining
Oddly, Kotaku just discussed Capcom's top franchises today, and the "Resident Evil" series topping the "Mega Man" and "Street Fighter" series. That said, "Final Fight" could be a thing of glory.
  • Chimaera
    @ 790

I knew it was too good to be true! It's like finding out Santa Clause isn't real all over again.

And thus quantity continues to reign over quality...and people keep swallowing the shit they continue to poop out. But what can you do, right?
  • Hendo
A motion capture Mega Man movie would be awesome!
  • Captain Awesome
I'm still holding out hope for a proper Pong movie. Brad Pitt as paddle 1 and Bruce Willis as Paddle 2.

They should get either Fincher or Aranofsky to direct it.
  • 790
    LOL, Captain!
  • Sam
How about a brand new better scripted more mushroomy Super Mario Bros Movie...

    DARKSTALKERS THE MOVIE.

Capcom should produce the movie version of their game Darkstalkers with Mortal Kombat producer Lawrence Kasanoff and his production company Threshold Entertainment to work on the rights in the future,
Darkstalkers story will follow the plot to the first game with a screenplay written by Sean Catherine Derek.
Threshold will work on the live action Darkstalkers series which it will be set 400 years ago,the show will center around Kenji a Red Earth warrior who joins forces with Darris a knight and Lucill a assassin.
This is what Capcom will work on this projects in the future.
    Thank You.
    BRUCE ACOSTA

Actually the New Resident Evil is CGI so it looks wicked but other then that hopefully nothing else comes out, lol
  • kenny
    another SILENT HILL please !
  • kenny
i wish we could erase all of the RESIDENT EVIL movies and start over with movies based on the actual RESIDENT EVIL games , why does Hollywood feel the need to make there version of our games , stick with the original story lines and you'll make more people happy and probably make more money as well .
  • Luna
as much as moves-stolen-from-video-games disgust me; it IS capcom we're talking about so i'm not surprised.

capcom is known for its whoring (mostly of its female characters) for profitz
soon they'll be selling capcom pornos

    just wait >__>
  • JayDee
RIVAL SCHOOLS THE MOVIE!!!!!!!! (Project Justice) With Batsu as the main character...OH MAN!!! That would be amazing!!! I would give a kidney to see that come out!! =D =D
  • Kevin
JayDee, Capcom has to get the Street Fighter film projects done correctly before they can decide on doing a Rival Schools film series and Darkstalkers which, will be good if taken from the video games and Udon comics. I felt cheated after what they did to Street Fighter and SFD deserves another chance with a different directors Zack Snyder or Ridley Scott.
