The Happening

M. Night Shyamalan’s new thriller The Happening is the director’s first rated-R film, and he wants you to know it. 20th Century Fox has released two new Red Band Movie trailers, which you can watch below thanks to JoBlo and IGN. We also have three new television spots which you can check out below that.

  • John
This movie trailer was laughable. It has no punch to it unless you add the rated R stuff in. People burst out laughing with the trailer to Iron Man in my showing. Plus now that I have seen some of the red band stuff it may be a shocking movie.
  • Kurizu
    Whoa!
  • Captain Awesome
Those redband trailers were great. The scene with the lioness was crazy.

    O_o
  • Andrew
I think M. Night has a tendency to write himself into corners. How, exactly, do you get across the idea of evil plants? How do you visualize it? It's a frightening concept, to be sure, but it's sort of passive and anti-climatic. I mean, what happens after everyone starts killing themselves and the main characters figure out what going on? I have a feeling the third act of "The Happening" will be severely deficient.
  • dan
Wow, def. an improvement. that lion scene and the crop cutter was sick.
  • What about the bees!?
  • Chimaera
The new stuff bolstered it up a bit for me...the part where the girl was just stabbing herself was sick. I might actually see this.
  • Captain Awesome
    Andrew,

I brought this up in the other The Happening article:

If he does it right and is actually using something like this? It will be awesome.
  • YoungZe
    Okay, now i'm interested.
  • A. J.
Don't tell me that after watching the trailer it doesn't
    make you interested at all.
  • I'm still in. The new trailer gave me goose bumps.
  • Floppy
Why have they been marketing this as such a soft movie when this shows it as a much more brutally appealing movie?
  • Steve
still gonna be stupid. just because its more graphic don't make it all better
  • TJ
yea shamalan ran out of ideas after sixth sense so his selling point now is that "it's his first r-rated film" ooooooooh
  • ColKurtz
The new Redband definitely raised my eyebrows, but I'm afraid the dialogue is going to be brutal. For example:

Engineer: Sir... (loooooong overly dramatic pause) ....we've lost contact.
    Marky Mark: With who?
Engineer: ...(long dramatic pause #2) Everyone.

GASP! Oh no, not (long dramatic pause) EVERYONE!

And what's with Marky Mark's speech pattern? Raising the pitch in his voice to end every sentence? Gets on my nerves for some reason.
  • Robert
Interesting concepts are a dime a dozen. The only thing that really matters is how well it is executed. And I remain skeptical. He (M.) becomes easily derailed and veers quickly into the realm of cliches and gimmicks. Plus he tries too hard to be Steven Spielberg and WAY over-directs his actors. Contrived is a word that comes to mind.
  • Tom
    Lawnmowers make me go ouch
  • The new trailers bumped up this film a notch for me. Loved the girl on the bench stabbing herself. *MIGHT* go see this......
  • Joe
I'll see it, but I won't be able to contain my laughter. I think I'll have to keep tally of how many times they say happening in the movie.
  • Robert
@ Joe: or take a drink each time they do....
  • The Dude.
Marky mark seems to be acting with his Dirk Diggler lovable idiot voice... I'm really kinda torn, the dialog sounds awful....but the redband scenes look awesome. Its a tough call. Might just go see it for Roberts idea and bring a few beers with me.
  • Aaron
    *Spoiler*

I think it's disturbing to hear how many people will "laugh" at this movie. Personally, I don't think I can chuckle while watching a woman stab herself, people throwing themselves off of a building, or John Leguizamo slit his wrists. The emotionless expressions on their faces betray the fear and desperation in their eyes as they are forced to end their own lives against their will. I'm sorry but I can't laugh at that, no matter how forced the dialogue is.
  • TJ
People will laugh at how ridiculously bad the movie is going to be. not the fact that people are killing themselves
  • dan
People laugh when bad things are happening to escape the reality of it.
  • MrMuggs
    What's going on?
    We lost contact.
    With whom?

Although it's proper English to say "with whom" rather than "with who" you rarely if ever hear it in common spoken English. That line alone seems so corny and wooden that it's laughable.
  • M. Night Shyamalan
There is nothing funny about this movie I assure you. It is my scariest film to date. It's so epic it's going to eat up films like The Godfather and Star Wars. People were so shocked after a special screening that they started vomitting. I even make a special cameo just for you fans. So please please please watch my new movie. Please. There will be a special twist also that I came up with on my own so get excited movie lovers! Sorry kiddies it's rated R this time so you're going to have to wait for the DVD! Oh and please watch my movie.
  • jb
    @ M. Night Shyamalan:

I'll bring the beer. You bring the movie.
  • Joe
The guy laying down in front of the lawnmower thing was laughable. I'll see it; only, I'll wait for Three-Dollar Days at the local second-run movie theater.
  • Last_Airbender
FACT: M. Night Shyamalan is Generation X's best director. Period. The fact that he doesn't have any Oscars by now is a travesty (along with the fact that it took 30 years before the Academy finally recognized Martin Scorsese as Best Director)! Here's a thought; Why don't all of you Shyamalan haters out there actually try going to the see the movie WITHOUT reading the spoilers?! You're like the spoiled brats that couldn't wait for Christmas morning to open your presents. Show some respect!
  • ladridi
Last_Airbender- learn the difference between a fact and an opinion. It is a subtle difference (note the sarcasm) but an important one.
    For example:
FACT: You are ignorant of the definition of the word "fact".
OPINION: (quote) "FACT: M. Night Shyamalan is Generation X’s best director."

Also, I take issue with your opinion of MNS as the best Gen X director. What about Paul Thomas Anderson?
And stepping away from the wikipedia-defined Gen X boundary of 1965, don't forget Guillermo del Toro (1964), Tarantino (1963), Soderbergh (1963), Peter Jackson (1961), etc.

In my opinion, MNS made one great film, The Sixth Sense. That is it. His biggest problem is that he might be a great director, but it is hard to tell since he is such a lousy writer.
  • Ryan
I know the reviewers are going to try and ruin a possibly good movie for everyone, again. They'll bitch and bitch and bitch again. The fact of the matter is that Shymalan is the one creating a film here, with an interesting idea and a lot of blood and guts. The reviewers dont create anything, just a bunch of whiney bitching, trying to force their opinion down the throats of the rest of us, trying to be the Gods of hollywood, deciding who to ruin, taking down 2 years worth of hard work and creativity in 2 worthless paragraphs, giving us nothing but a worthless opinion from a bunch of worthless human beings who create no product or service worth paying for. They ought to get real jobs. Just like the terrorists destroy buildings they could never create, movie reviewers destroy films they could never create.
  • Chalo
I don't see MNS as a great director, but his stories are something to think about. I belive that he's is a good storyteller.
So please, listen to the message behind his movies, and forget about the competition towards "the best", coz we all know, it take us to nowhere.
