Jake Gyllenhaal is the Prince of Persia

Prince of Persia

The Hollywood Reporter has just confirmed a story that was rumored on internet websites last month, Jake Gyllenhaal has been crowned the Prince of Persia in the big screen Disney live-action adaptation of the popular video game series.  Prince of Persia is an action adventure video game which follows an adventurous prince who teams up with a rival princess to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) will play Tamina, a feisty and exotic princess with whom Dastan (Gyllenhaal) must join forces with to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire helmer Mike Newell is directing under Super Producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The Sands of Time game was released in late 2003 and is a continuation to the popular PC game series Prince of Persia, created by Jordan Mechner in 1989. The game was praised for its visual design and finely tuned game mechanics, and won several awards. The game’s success led to a couple sequels.

Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner. Mechner has revealed that the movie will not be a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the videogame, but will instead take “some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as ‘Pirates’ [of the Caribbean] did with the theme park ride.” Production is set to begin in July, and a tenative June 16th 2009 release date was previously announced.

Not to go off on a tangent, but it’s worth noting that The Hollywood Reporter did not source or credit the story to our friends at LatinoReview, who broke the news back in early April. Week after week, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety create story based off of tips that appear on the internet movie websites, yet disrespect the same websites by not giving out proper credit mention. How unprofessional.

Gemma looks really cute, but I'll take a pass on this film.
  • dan
    ...?

    JG is playing a Persian?

    ..okay.
  • It's great casting... coming from someone who's persian himself

I'm still not sold on Mike Newell as director yet though
  • Hector
I think this will be a great film, has all the ingredients to be a blockbuster. Mechner did a great job with the goblet of fire, he can handle action and character development.

The first thing that comes to mind is:

    The Conqueror ( 1956)

Genghis Khan played by JOHN WAYNE
  • starblazer101
so is that the official logo of the film????
  • Captain Awesome
It's interesting that Disney is backing this film. Who made the popular 2d game version of Alladin for the Genesis and the SNES. Which was done by some of the original members of the old PoP games.

A bit of irony in this, I suppose :)
  • Sauce
yeah...a little skeptical of this choice. Not that JG will ruin it with bad acting, that won't happen. I'm just not really sure why we couldn't find one Persian actor that was worth while on this thing. Shrug...It's not really important at the end of the day...but taking the brand name over authentic always kinda rubs me the wrong way.
  • When I first read about JG being cast in this I was skeptical but he's grown on me and I think it could work out well. Gemma Arterton is great too, and she looks very similar to the character.

The only thing I have misgivings about is the straying from the story bit. but they may end up crafting a superior adventure, who knows.

    @ Peter

When are you guys planning on fighting back against the Hollywood plagiarizers or at least trying to get some attention turned on it?
  • Floppy: You will definitely be hearing more about this issue in the coming days.
  • duca
I'm a big fan of the games and I am very interested in seeing how this plays out. It does kinda irk me that JG will the be lead, not because I think he'll do a bad job (I love him personally) but because umm... he's not Persian? I know lame, but still it is the name of the movie after all.

It does make me REALLY happy to hear such pleasant big names and illegitimate companies/directors/whatever backing this though. It's about time a video game movie didn't suck monkey balls. It will be very interesting to see how they handle the action sequences (the main character is a super acrobatic monkey!) as well as the time traveling aspects.

    *illegitimate=legitimate

    stupid spell check... grr
  • We at HeroesARG.com fully support our fellow bloggers who are being ripped off by Variety and the Hollywood Reporter. They're using truely unfair, and unethical practices and it needs to stop! Online bloggers should be taken as serious journalists, just as much as the bigger mags/sites are. They work multiple times harder since they have to research, dig, beg, and work for stories, while Variety and HR are given the info.
  • jonny
    People still buy magazines?
  • Jmoney
    Disney? sweet a PG-13 movie
  • big daddy
naysayers-jake gyllenhaal isnt persian! this is madness!

    me-THIS IS SPARTA!! chestkick!

    @ peter

will you lead us in an attack on hollywood reporter?
  • Ben
I think if you look at the newer games (so the less fun ones) where the Prince becomes more of a anti-hero you can sort of see a resemblance to JG. That's just me though.
  • Jim
Like you said it was rumored on the internet. Not confirmed. I would like to think that Variety and Hollywood reporter have their own sources on things and don't necessarily sit here hitting refresh waiting for something to come up. I agree that should they reference a site if they do indeed get a story from it. But I think whining about not getting credit for a rumor is a little childish. Major publications have been known to sit on stories and not publish every little whisper that comes their way until they get something more substantial. That as well as them having publication timelines with stories leads me to think the "THEY'RE IN OUR BLOGZ STEALIN OUR NEWZ" argument is a little unfounded.

That being said, blogs enjoy a competitive advantage in the 0-day news game and as such are thriving because of it. It is insulting to your readers to suggest that their readership of your site isn't enough for you, since that readership is ultimately what will give you credibility with the major publications. They will only respect you when they fear you, they will only fear you when you are hurting their business and you will only hurt their business by being better than them. So keep up the hard work and the rest will follow.

No child was ever treated like an adult for stamping their feet and yelling "treat me like an adult". ya dig?
  • Well, he looks the part.

The movie has the very broad potential to be semi-decent. However, I can't foresee a creative team behind it that'll provide it with that chance.

    Such is modern cinema.
  • big daddy
    @ jim

i highly doubt that these blog sites would claim this without some kind of reasonable evidence, or indicator that the information is being copied. The sad thing is that the first instinct of many people is: they are just a blog, these more credible publications wouldnt copy their information. the truth is that its easy to do it because they arent as credible, at least not yet. not to say what you said isnt true though, obviously you gave some pretty good constructive ideas. either way, if /film or the other sites have some evidence, i think we would all love to hear about it, and do something too
  • LOTNorm
Not really my first choice, but I'm sure he'll pull it off.

Not sure about Newell, though. He is a good director, don't get me wrong, but I would just like to see the take on this from someone like Alfonso Cuaron or even Stephen Sommers or the emerging Zack Snyder.

This will be worth watching and has a chance to be really good.
  • YoungZe
Oh man, i love Jake but this just doesn't work. :? However i hope the movie can prove that i'm wrong.
  • Jim
    @big daddy

I know for a fact that lazy mainstream reporters rip off blogs. I see it all the time. I also see how blogs do a lot of there business, writing 2-3 sentences and block quoting all the juicy tidbits out of an article. I'm not making a judgment since I am the one who benefits from this. It allows me to consume far more news than I normally could.

I guess I have two main points: a) this isn't really the infraction to drawl your line in the sand on, since I think the argument that you need to credit the source and existence of a rumor when you post concrete news, is fragile at best. Otherwise I have my own rumor to report. I've heard from a well placed source that zach an miri is loosing its date. If it actually comes to pass everyone must give Jim @ the slashfilm comments props.

b)That it doesn't really matter if they give them credit or not. I mean sure it might hurt the long tail. But how much does that really matter in the 0-day news game. Perhaps peter could share some traffic data. Like by percent how much is frontpage traffic how much is older stuff? Its my assumption that people in his position can't really rest on the laurels of the back catalog. The blogs will live and die by their content and quality. Not on respect from the msm. People who read blogs don't care if the main stream press consider bloggers real journalists. They must have decided the blog has enough credibility for them to be reading it in the first place. People who read blogs don't read the msm, they just read what the blogs say about what is written by the msm. Blogs found their audience without the help of the msm and they will continue to find greater audience in the same ways.

As an aside I would also like to suggest that if peter continues to feel slighted by variety and hollywood reporters sourcing. He should also look at his own. I mean a link and via (ala boing boing) at the bottom of the post would be a nice. Some things like the cool stuff and votd, I often wonder who found them first. Also if someone emails a tip they should probably get credit if they want it.
  • Brendan
    To quote Darth Vader... "NOoooOooOOoooOoooooooo....."
  • Jim
    @peter

I take back the last part. You're sourcing is gold. I can't find the thing I was thinking about when I wrote that and looking at the recent postings. You give fair credit.
  • sari
    No one will see this...
  • Patrick
I think it's an all right choice. They could have done a lot worse. I would have preferred that guy that was actually of Persian royalty that looked identical to the PoP.

I'm more worried about the film itself though. Didn't Jerry say that it isn't a video game movie, and they were thinking about not even having it set during the Babylon era? Also, Mike Newell said he had never played the games.

Throw another title into the video game movie trash heap.

Let's pray Sony gets it right with Metal Gear Solid. Not holding my breath though.
  • haaaahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Casting WHITE people in "ethnic" roles.

    Typical.
  • with or without jake gyllenhall, i'm pretty much guaranteeing you that this is going to suck so much ass.
  • MaK
"Gemma Arterton will play Tamina, a feisty and exotic princess"

Exotic!!!?? she is sooo pale to be exotic
  • Jonas
Ahhhh, something good turned into a steaming pile of Hollywood bile.
  • Alex
Why Tamina? I like the name Farah 10x better.
  • Ross
Ok, some I'm psyched for the movie but come on! Jake Gyllenhaal?
There are so many people that could do this role better, and I don't think it even should have been Orlando Bloom. Colin Farrell has the look and the acting ability to pull it off. Even an unknown would be better in this situation. After Brokeback Mountain no one is gonna take this seriously.
  • Amanda
David Zandi the real Prince of Persia should've been hired. Disney and Jerry really screwed up this great franchise.
  • Mac
How about they get someone who "IS" "Persian".

Man... Hollywood is just going to new lows.
  • SilentShadoW
i am middle eastre and i think that this man .....
    Jake........!!!!!!!!!!!!

he sux 4 this one man

nooooo way he can be the prince f persia

u know i am a big fan of this game i finished it all

    sands of time.......warior within.......the 2 thrones...and i loove it soo much as a game
it is my favoirite game ever

they cant make this cute blonde here do the role

    nooooooooooooooooooooooooo way

he is soooooooo white 4 it
no fance i am white 2 but he is not the suitable face

and he must have a face of a serious man
i mean this one looks soo innocent like a child

naaaaah he can make romance it is ok but not this one

so sa'eed jarrah might be good 4 this role

but there is more people who can do it better

arab actors who acts arab movies or tv shows
maybe they didnt act in hollywood yet
but this dont mean the wont love to
    or they cant do it

it is just that they didnt have the chance

so i recommend that the director starts to thin seriously
its time 4 him 2 cut the craaap

    thnx
