Oh dear. Just saw the film last night. Nicole's acting has finally improved. Hugh J was awesomely hot. But the comment about the film "telling" instead of engaging was absolutely right. The in your face obviousness of the dialogue and patronising voice over was almost too much. It was full of cinematic cliches and if I hear the word
"drongo" again I may have to chew my own leg off.

The story is lifted almost down to the last character from the HBO series Deadwood. Baz has obviously seen it and said to himself; "wow lets do that only modify it for Australia". Oh and then there's the naff references to Oz/Aus. Don't forget Hugh Jackman played Peter Allen, The Boy from Oz.

The best aspect of the film was that it highlighted the treatment of indigenous Australians by the whites. Hats off for that. Too bad about the theft of the plot though.

This will be awsome. I am so excited to see it and cannot wait. I am an Aussie form Perth Western Australia. My pop was in Darwin when the post office got bombed there in the war. He is now 92. My dearest nana who died about 12 years ago told me all about it. She would have loved this movie if she were alive today. I don't see how anyone can knock it. The cast is extremely talented and professional. All us Aussies should be proud of them. Credit, where it's due. The work and effort that has been put into it. To have the opportunity to see this spectacular piece of entertainment in my life time is awesome. If you think it is boring. That is because you are having boring thoughts. Come on, it's about time we praised the talent of our
Aussies. There is nothing wrong with gushing or positive statements. Thank you to Baz and cast for making this in my lifetime. We are 'The Lucky Country". This movie is going to show that to the rest of the world. Then maybe you negative types just want to keep that a secret. Now that. I can understand.

It looks to me like it's going to be brilliant. I've been waiting for this movie since I first saw the trailer months ago. I love Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet. I think Luhrmann has a real talent for touching the emotions and I'm really looking forward to it.

Being an American, i really think this will shed some light on what role Australians had in WW2. Looks like they got a bit of a beating...looking forward to seeing this.

ArDo you honestly think this is a going to be a good film?Looks like a wanna be Gone With the wind .Then they touch on the stolen generation, what a joke...They didnt go into detail about the slaughtered natives of the nation. One thing I do respect about American films dealing with points in thier history they tell the truth how they raped the people of the land. This is a weak attempt to bring the the most popular Aussie stars to the big screen and half arse tell such a huge portion of what really went on during those days.Im Australian and I think its sad that they are creating a historic film, selling it to the world yet not being honest about how we screwed the aboriginal people during that time and had the ALL WHITE AUSTRALIA POLICY.As far a Darwin goes another false hood they dont mention how the prime minister of Australia begged the president of the U.S to assist us of what was basically going to be a take over of the country by the Japs. That was what the ANZAC treaty was based on.We continue to falsify and doshonestly potray Australia as this place where the orginal people of this land never had real struggles and hardships brought to them by european settelers

what's wrong with botox? Is it a crime or a reprehensible offence?: I don't know that Nic uses Botox, but I do, as do a few others whom I know. And it's wrong and evil, because.......?

I saw her not so long ago in Sydney and she looked perfectly fine and beautiful, as usual, to me.

And nothing which Baz does is ever cheesy!

Maybe it should just be called "BOTOX".

What the the hell is up with Kidman's lips - I missed the whole preview as I was transfixed by her blown up lips that seem to act independently to the rest of her face - not that it seems to move either.

I may be wrong but I don't think BOTOX or lip plumping was available in the era the film is set, LOL.

Kindman's plastic face makes the whole thing laughable. What a complete joke.

It's gunna be a HUGE flop - cheesy and terrible.

One correction: Pearl Harbour was bombed before Darwin was, not t'other way around.

I can't believe that some Australians here say that they didn't know that Darwin had been bombed in ww2. Incredible! Darwin was bombed about 60 times in total.

At the very least, it looks like Baz will be educating some people. As for the film's title and compass - it's a fictional entertainment, drawing on some mythical assumptions of The Great Southern Land. It's not meant as a complete political commentary, but a reflection of some aspects of life in 1940s. Even great epic films like Lawrence of Arabia didn't have time to delve too deeply into the real politics of that time and place, which trouble the world to this day.

Dean, you're a tool. How hypocritical of you and Sad Aussie to say "as foreigners come in and set up their own cultures"... blah blah. What the hell do you think the English did? Study some history.

Movie looks excellent from a cinematography point of view and deals with some great material that a lot of "Aussies" (see above) probably aren't that familiar with. Bombing of Darwin was a MAJOR and crucial event close to a turning point in WWII. I think this looks like it's going to be HUGE, especially overseas, though I think it will surprise some at home. As someone said, think Titanic. (esp as far as getting the girls back for multiple viewings)

Cringe inducing - like singing Waltzing Matilda at the rugby - which is a national embarrasment. And calling it Australia will almost certainly reconcile it to the same fate...

Ok, so your statement took it too far. I don't agree with hanging anyone and I don't think it's any one persons fault.... Anyways, I'm interested to see if this movie flops or does really well. Time will tell.

I have to say that I agree with your statement Sad Aussie:

"To those proudly chanting how great Australia is you are kidding yourselves and living in the past. The citys have been flooded with VERY FOREIGN foreigners. Our masters and social engineers have destroyed this country and should be hung for treason. Was not Englands example enough?"

However I think Australia is still a great country and the nicest place to live in all the world. On the other hand, political correctness is eating away at our country as foreigners come in and setup there own cultures and way of living and Australian's do nothing about it!

I think that the trailer doesn't do the feel justice, the trailer is very slow paced, however i believe the film will have both a mixture of fast paced and slow scenes, a contrast always adds to a film.

Australia is such a beautiful country, and to those who have actually been to the outback, the land hasn't changed at all, except for maybe the different fashions.

Im a big fan of nicole kiddman, and even though some of her films may have been flops, she has never let the film down in terms of acting......EVER. She is a wonderful actor. BAz Lurmans work on this film, telling from the trailer alone, is superb, professional and couldn't be better, the cinematography just looks like each scene has had so much work put into it.

I think it will be a moving and enlightening piece....can't wait to see it.

This will earn more at the box office in Australia than any other previous Aussie film and may outdo most of the overseas films. The pre-release hype has been big to say the least, you have two of our favourite people starring and its about a time when as most people here are now realising Australia was bombed by the Japanese. It will only be boring because you have made up your mind for it to be that way. For most of us it will be a look at the past, two wonderful actors and some scenery that most Australians themselves have never seen before.

Yeh tourism australia has got those adds running on tv around the world to try and increase the tourism industry in australia. If anyone is interested in visiting some of the places in the movie you can go to http://www.territorydiscoveries.com/campaigns/AustraliaMovie and get some pretty good deals.

It's funny how this is the first time the focus for tourism to australia has been on the outback and the northern territory and not our beaches. I wonder if it will work? Any thoughts?

and add to which after the raid,.. australia went on to build its own fighter from scratch to flight inside 120 days. granted the first wern't great and by the time the gear was available to make them match the japanese zero, the UK/USA had enough Spitfires and Kittyhawks to give us to continue the fight. Best part is it was designed by a german jew refugee from the japanese, who'd helped design the zero.

I hope they got the history right this time. Yes its true there were Japanese airraids on Darwin in late 42 & early 43 , there were however RAAF Spitfire fighters stationed there in 43, #1 Wing RAAF, consisting 452 & 453 Squadrons RAAF and 54 Squadron RAF under the command of Group Captain Clive Caldwell RAAF.

The Japs had it all their way after the first raid, when they came back for seconds they got shot up by the RAAF Spitfires rather badly.

Lets hope they took this little nugget of history and managed to put it on film, instead of filling the film with irrelevant mush.
