James Cameron's Next Movie… The Dive?James Cameron told the Hollywood Reporter that he wants “to do something a lot smaller” after Avatar.  It is possible that Cameron’s next project could be The Dive, about the romance between controversial Cuban free diver Francisco “Pipin” Ferreras and Frenchwoman Audrey Mestre. Based on a true story, Mestre became a free diver under his guidance, and went on to break several world records before dying in 2002 while competing. Ferreras was featured in the 2001 Imax documentary Ocean Men: Extreme Dive.

“It’s a drama, a love story,” Cameron said. “This will require underwater photography, which will look gorgeous in 3-D.”

Sounds well and good, but I was kind of hoping that with Avatar Cameron would be making his return to the genre of Sci-Fi/Action. I understand his fascination with the deep,  I have enjoyed what he has done in the educational documentary space, and I respect what he is doing for the technology of 3-D filmmaking, but I think it’s time for Cameron to return to what he’s good at. It’s like when Michael Jordan left Basketball to play Baseball… And look how that turned out. Imagine if Cameron made a supehero flick or a video game adaptation how much he could elevate those genres. I understand he doesnt need to mae those type of films. And I also understand that he probably enjoys working under water and with the new 3D technology, but the world would be better serviced with another T2-caliber sci-fi/action film.

Discuss:  What would you like to see James Cameron make next?

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but… Aqua Man would seem to make sense.

he’d make a wicked awesome Captain America

I like that the man diversifies (just look what an unprecedented success Titanic was; and The Abyss is one of his most ambitious storytelling efforts). I would still so love to see him elevate the sci-fi/action genre from the doldrums it’s settling into now - imagine what would’ve happened if his “Spider-Man” wasn’t turned down by Sony for being too dark and violent? I still say he can eat his cake and have it by dabbling in both, but he better start shooting like Clint Eastwood and wrap-up already! :)

He not doing any more sci fi because theres no one out there who can challenge him. T2 still hasn’t been topped since it came out almost twenty years ago.

Yeah, that free dive movie was already made — it was called Le Grand Bleu (The Big Blue) by Luc Besson and it was a beautiful masterpiece and a worldwide sensation. Way to be original.

WHAT? PLEASE don’t tell me he is going back to doing underwater stuff…Does this mean Battle Angel won’t be made (as this is currently in pre-production…..right?). Please tell me Battle Angel will be made……

for weeks i’ve been saying (on this very site) that cameron is the man who could make JLA or Avengers work. he would absolutely take the genre to a new level, i can only imagine the scope he would bring. cameron was made for these big epic worlds that comic books/vidoe games exist in.

btw…chris nolan is excluded form this, as i feel he competes with cameron on every level, just in a different way.

I can see why he would want to do something smaller and more enclosed. A lot of the epics he did are amazingly draining and are a huge undertaking. He’s not giving up on sci-fi. But I can see why he would want to take a different route after Avatar.

It’s like what Nolan did between the Batman films. You want to reserve some good juice before diving back into what wets your whistle [pun intended].

Am I the only one who is sick of Digital 3-D?

Ok we have two water themed Cameron movies that’s enough. If anyone was serious about making an Aquaman movie it would be Cameron for sure. What the hell happened with Battle Angel? I was really excited to hear about it since it would most likely be a return for Cameron back R rated movies sans water.

He took a 10 year break I think he needs to start thinking like his movies are never going to get made. For a moment it sounded like someone lit a fire under him when he was rumored to be working on the Battle Angel script while in post-production of Avatar. He keeps hinting on these awful sounding projects like this new one along with a drama captured in 3D. Nobody wants a non-epic Cameron film. Hey Jim theres a thing called producing, stick to want fans want.

    Hi folks !
I am absolutely agree with the ones who say that :no one wants a non sci-fi epic from our dear james!!…he is a unique filmmaker in the world of cinema ,so what we want from him is making a unique movie like A V A T A R !
I see why he likes to make a small movie, making something big as this film will make every super director tired…But dear Saint James, Pleeeeease be Unique and make a phenomenal epic such as : AVATAR Trilogy, Battle Angel, Aqua man, capt america, …what about an anime epic like MAZINGER or Robotech!!!??

What happened to Cameron. He went from futuristic robots and Aliens to the abyss of oceanic orgasnic bliss. Shit every film since T2 has been ocean related.
Guy has an untamed boner for the seas.

  14. Gravatar

I fail to see how making movies related to the ocean can be a bad thing. Sure, he’s unbeteable when it comes to the science fiction genre, but if the quality of the work he produces is good, then who cares? I say he can make as many ocean themed films as he wants. Hopefully, the rumors about Battle Angel will actually turn into reality.

Right on Lig, that’s cool. I’m just into films about the ocean. (Not my cup of saltwater).
His next film is a sci-fi epic. Only thing I’m not into his Camerons love for 3D.

    Correction sorry.
