Lionsgate has revealed new details about the future of the SAW franchise. The fifth installment, follows Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), who has been carrying Jigsaw’s (Tobin Bell) legacy, goes on a man hunt after the secret is threatened.
“People escape one trap, just to get caught in another; it’s closer in feel to the original SAW as thematically it’s about teamwork. I am far and away convinced that these are the best traps we have ever had,” Producer Marc Berg told Bloody-Disgusting. “This film is far less confusing and more linear, and there are TWO great twists. Just when you thought you figured it out, we twist again.”
The film features six different traps and they shot three different endings, which will be included on the eventual DVD release. The full supporting announce was also announced, and includes: Scott Patterson, Betsy Russell, Mark Rolston, Carlo Rota, Julie Benz, Greg Bryk, Laura Gordon and Meagan Good. David Hackl directed the fifth film but will not be returning for the sixth installment after all. I wonder if the studio replaced him or if this was his own choice. SAW series editor Kevin Greutert will be making his feature directorial debut on Saw VI. Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton are back to pen the screenplay.
Also announced is a SAW video game which was written by franchise creators Leigh Whannell and James Wan, featuring all of the original cast members, and will take place in the timeline of the original film. Saw V is scheduled to hit theaters on October 24th, 2008.

I’m actually a fan of this series, and I think it’s storytelling has been underestimated or completely ignored. If you follow the Jigsaw mythology, it goes through all 4 films to date, with each adding more to the overall story. Granted, we’re not talking Oscar by any stretch, but because of the whole “torture-porn” thing, people overlook the story because of the gruesome traps and sometimes bad acting. At any rate, they’re smarter than the Hostel films, and the slew of similar movies that have come out over the past few years (I’m looking at you, Captivity).
With that said, I agree it’s time to move on, especially if they’re getting away from Jigsaw and the writer’s are focusing more on the traps than the story.

i thought saw iv was great story wise. they really got intricate with it.

They will stop making Saw “films” when they stop making a decent profit. Blame all the retards that will pay to see trash (there’s much worse than Saw), and unfortunately there’s a lot of them in the States. The horror genre needs some new blood.

The first “Saw” was terrible. The story was lame, and the acting was terrible. I love it when Danny Glover discovers some guy tied up in the lair of the bad guy, and instead of freeing him he hides to see what the bad guy is going to do. Priceless-ly bad. The days of great fiction are over thanks to the droves of people who are getting dumber by the minute.

A SAW Video game!?!?
Uh oh. I hear Jack Johnson coming

I have this friend, who I shall from here on out call “Andrew”. Andrew is not a very smart person and spends a lot of his time watching movies. Everytime a movie comes out I ask him, “Hey Andrew, have you watched this? Is it any good?” The more he likes the movie, the less I want to see it. He likes Uwe Boll movies. I mean, LIKES them a lot. And defends them. He is the perfect example of the mass stupidity and brain deadness of todays citizens. He is very excited to see Zombie Strippers. The media tells him “Hey, this is cool!” and he believes them. So whenever I’m not sure about a movie I just ask him, and then I know. :)
He would be totally stocked for this.

There’s plenty of great storytelling left in Hollywood, in all genres. Horror movies generally take a beating among “serious” film fans, but there’s plenty of great horror films too. The Descent comes to mind as a really good recent example.
Have they gotten carried away with sequels? Well, yeah, but I’m officially calling out all of you that claim to be smarter than everyone else. Saw had a really great and original premise, and Jigsaw is one of the best slasher horror villains to have come along in years. Are there moments in these films that are poorly executed? Absolutely. But no more so than the highly geek-praised Hostel films, which have about three good scenes between the two. Another good premise, but completely lame execution.
What I was trying to say is that the Jigsaw scenes in the 4 movies that have been released so far contain a really great character and story. This gets overlooked by the ridiculous gore and dumb victims. Which is pretty standard for most horror movies.
I suspect that some of you are just not horror fans. And if you don’t like them, then don’t go see them. There are tons of indie and art films that are worth watching as well. Different films for different times and moods, right?
And please don’t insult my intelligence because I like some horror movies you think are stupid, especially when some of you missed my point entirely.

Saw 5 and 6?…I’ve only seen the first 2 and that was enough for me.

Nice to hear of these movies.Thought the SAW series is pretty decent

I think the series is great and it keeps gettin better. I do like some horror but most are laughable. Agony says it all and if ya do not like the movie do not watch but that is not your cue to attack…To each their own….
July 2nd, 2008 at 3:16 pm
this is just my thoughts but…
i think the saw films are the only ever horror/suspense film ever to pull off sequals. i love these movies. everytime i see one i cant wait for the next. but thats just me
July 5th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
I Like All The Saws and I’m not stupid actually I have a 4.2 gpa but anyways I like them okay blood and guts yes but that’s a horror film…beginning with Freddie and Jayson until now with Saw they have an overal good message shown through a sick and twisted way but its true most people dnt cherish their lives so that’s the moral I’m not condoning or telling people hey go make a trap and kill people cuz its not right..but maybe this movies was not made for the simple minding if you dnt get the message oh well you like what you like your all entitled to your own opinions

I’m a horror fan!As in big!But the problem right now is that all the horrors are the same!We have, your usual victim/s,killer and survivors.I havent been scared by any slasher for lyk 12 yrz.I’m bored!!Now Saw,is on another level! It aint your usual kill and laugh situation. Its,to put it simply,MIND-BLOWING!Keep up the excellent work!

Amanda ‘designed’ the gun trap
NOW we are to believe Hoffman can design TRAPS too? It takes the mind of an ENGINEER to do what these people CLAIM to have done. THAT is probably the part of the films *I* have a problem with. I have an Assoc Degree in Mech Engineering. You do NOT JUST WANT TO BE an Engineer. If it isn’t in your blood you are wasting your time…just like the LAMEO Army commercial that a kid THINKS he will be an Engineer. GIVE ME A F**G BREAK!

Saw have a great premise and there is a lot of thought put into them to keep them original. It takes some hard work to use a low budget and some unknown actors and make a great franchise that keeps delivering excellence, keep up the good work Saw. As for a videogame, I do not believe it will be any good the way they describe it. “pick up weapons throught the game”??? that is not what saw is about. Make it a survival horror like condemned 2, assume the role of a new detective who goes to the after results of a crimescene (cue the condemned forensics game element), then have a flashback where you go into a 1st person POV and replay the events of the trap. That would make a truly successful game. Please dont ruin the Saw game!!!
July 24th, 2008 at 12:43 am
oh, and go to bloody-disgusting.com, and go to where betsy russel talks about saw V, down at the user comments, about half way down you’ll find a couple of websites at photo bucket. These are supposedly the first parts of the script for Saw 5. I dont know if they are legit, but I enjoyed reading them, got me excited if it were true. I mean, how else would Hoffmans secret be threatened unless Amanda lived???
July 28th, 2008 at 7:32 am
I really like all SAW films that have been released, the twists are exciting and most of them unpredictable (Which is nice) I think what’s been written already is true… Why watch it then moan about it? How about watch Saw 1, if you don’t like it… don’t watch the next 3 & write about how bad it is. C’mon, I’m sure if you had better idea’s then you’d be earnin A LOT more £ and be producing a movie to hit our screens right now. Wow I sound like a right moany old bitch. ;-) Enjoy Saw 5 & 6 for those of you waiting & for those who watch it & then moan about them all… I Look forward to seein your movie on youtube.

All I have to say is they better f888in explain what is going on with the little girl!!!!!
August 24th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
i agree with heather. there are to many questions left unanswered liKe:
*whatever happened to the little girl
*did Dr.lawrence ever die?!
*did that one chick in saw 4 the dective ever die 2
*how does jigsaw know what’s gonna happen exactly, what would happen if something went wrong?!
*whatever happened to Dr.lawrence wife and kid?!!!!!!
its like every saw film has to have a weird ending so that they can make another one.
OH!!! and actually since saw 3 they havent done anything new because saw 3 ends with that dude, jigsaw, amanda and that other doctor. then amanda shoots dr.denlyon or wtf. then her husband shoots her and she dies. then its just jigsaw and him.he kills jigsaw, that thing goes off and shoots that girl in the face. that dude hears the tape, his duaghter is where?!?!? dont know. then it ends.
saw 4 starts with autopsy.they open jigsaw and thats it. what happens later already happened because towards the end of saw 4 they’re all in the same buling as saw 3 when the movie was over. so saw 5 will have to show everything that REALLY happened after the autopsy.if they dont my love for saw will be OVER! hope you can all understand this..its hard to explain. but questions e-mail me at loco_0913@yahoo.ocm
August 30th, 2008 at 7:32 pm
The saw movies r amazing i hope they never stop makin them well i hope that they go out wit a bang like all of the movies so far…. nd to all the haters u can hav ur own opinion but just because u dont enjoy the pure genius of these movies, it dont mean that hundreds of thousands of other people agree with u we all hav r own taste in movies nd the saw movies arnt for u nd if u dnt like them then y even bother watching them nd just let the other people enjoy them… Saw rocks my socks so ha!!!! lol
September 19th, 2008 at 8:24 am
Don’t understand all those negative comments.
Folks, if you are not interested or don’t like the franchise why read the topic in the first place?
I m a big fan of Saw.
And to point out - it’s not really a horror movie - the genre has long since died. Saw is absolutely different genre yet to be defined.
September 30th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
They should stop moving forward really in the saw films, as there making it shit and leaving 2 many un answered questions, if they never reveal what happened to doctor Gordon then that will be quite shit. I thought Saw 4 was quite shocking as it just left you confused and even more ancious to watch the nxt film, tho n#5 looks like a good film, reminds me of saw 2, tho i hope they end it at Saw 6 having all the questions answered
