Steve Mason is predicting that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will make $162 - $172 Million in it’s first five days of release domestically.
It opens on Thursday, May 22 at Midnight (Wednesday night), so this will make for a huge opening day, which I am projecting in the $41M-$44M range (that includes Wednesday night after midnight screenings). Then Friday should be $32M-$34M, Saturday will likely tick up to $34M-$36M and the Sunday leading into the holiday will be on par with Friday. With a Memorial Day Monday of $22M-$24M, I am calling for a 5-day gross in the $162M-$172M range.
Jones may come close to breaking the highest 5-day opening gross record, which is currently held by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith with $172.8 million.

Well most of my aunts and uncles, and to a lesser degree my parents, rarely go to the movies but they all want to see this film because “it’s indy!” But they don’t want to see it opening weekend/week because of the crowds. So I’m thinking those numbers might be a tad high but it will have extremely long legs.

Yo, Larry you are completely right. The marketing for this film has been pretty flimsy. I don’t think the younger crowds really knows much about, or don’t have any interest in the film. I’m 22 so of course I want to see Indy. If they focused on Shia more in the ads I could have seen it making $170 - $200 million because teenagers and kids know him from Transformers. $115 - $120 million opening weekend.

Am I the only one who thinks this movie is gonna be extremely underwhelming at the box office? I’m sure the movie will be great, but I really feel that people are overestimating Indy’s appeal, IMHO it’s about 15 years too late.

I might be with you. In my opinion this movie could/should go either way, based on what we’ve seen of the actual movie and its marketing. BUT it does have an established rep with the success of its predecessors so the likely hood that it won’t do well at the Box Office isn’t very high. I think it’ll fall into the likes of the new Star War films and not be as great as the originals but profitable nonetheless.

I was sat around a table last night not talking about film which a bunch of people my age (20-25) and the film came up. I really do think it’ll get everybody in a cinema seat. Either way it’s a guaranteed way to make a boat load of cash.

This film will likely be the fastest ever to $200 million… and possibly $300 if it doesn’t stall out around 250 because it is possible the expected audience isn’t entirely there.

Hello movie fans. Yeah, with regards to Indy making 170 million, I just can’t see it happening, more like 120 million. Polls, tracking and all that, I don’t see Harrison Ford and Indy besting Johnny Depp and Capt. Jack. Ford and Indy have lost their relevance the way the matrix and superman did.

The fact that Indy is coming out in theaters for a 4th film trascends all generations at this point. The parents of the children/teenagers that someone said “don’t know who Indy is” are the group that is most anxious to see the movie and it’s spilling over to their children/teenagers. I know my son has seen all the Indy movies on DVD and as a high schooler has been talking about the new movie with great anticipation. $170M is a lot to ask for an opening weekend, but if any movie can do it this summer, Indy can. The only thing that could have made it better for me is if Sean Connery would have come out of retirement for just one scene. Overlooking that, what would you rather do over Memorial Day weekend than see a great action movie to kick your summer into high gear?

This movie will get older audiances that haven’t been to the theater in years buying tickets.
And if its a true crowd/fan pleaser, you can bet all of the fanboys are going to see it over and over again.
This film has been at the top of every ‘most anticipated movie’ ‘highest grossing movie’ poll of the summer, everyone is waiting for this movie, thats why Narnia didn’t do very well opening weekend.
