Middle-lower left corner
Our friends at First Showing having confirmed that Captain America’s red, white and blue shield appears near the 1 hr 30 min mark in Iron Man. I looked for a better screen grab, but haven’t found one clearer than that above. The scene is the one where Pepper Potts/Gwyneth Paltrow walks in on Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr. as he attempts to remove his suit after returning from his showdown with the fighter jets. You may recall the scene more clearly knowing that this is right around when Stark says to Potts,”Let’s face it, this is not the worst thing you’ve caught me doing.”
Apparently, the shield is as “clear as day” in the film complete with red coloring, but my friends and I didn’t notice it during my viewing. Did you? And if you’re wondering, the shield cannot be seen in the trailer when parts of the scene are shown.
As expected, fans are already working the shield’s cameo into the logic of Marvel’s new and ever expanding movie-verse, but I’m going with the “just for fun” theory right now. Without spoiling anything, the scene obviously occurs before Stark encounters Nick Fury/Samuel L. Jackson after the credits, and S.H.I.E.L.D. is not a prominent factor when the shield pops up. However, it still appears that Stark is at work on a prototype of Captain America’s signature weapon, so one can at least imagine a similar, stunning and advanced technology utilized by the character when he appears on screen in 2011’s The First Avenger: Captain America. Where World War II, cryogenics and Matthew McConaughey (ugh) come into play, who knows.
Discuss: Sight gag or is this all part of Marvel’s new franchise design? How do you feel about Stark possibly being the inventor of Captain America’s shield?

May 10th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Definitely part of the design!
BUt still, I can’t seem to find his shield, :(
May 10th, 2008 at 11:48 am
@ Jonathan
Yeah, it took me a second as well. The key is to look for a white star-like shape on the left side of the image, at mid-level. It’s not at the lower left per se, so go left, and then go up. It’s there.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
First time I saw the movie I didn’t notice it at all. Than I read about it online and stuff and than saw the movie again and it sticks out very obviously once you see it. Very cool.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
This proves Iron man is a Masterpiece!!!! Tony starks is a genious. I can’t believe he is building Iron man shield. He is talented like a mug.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
Totally missed it in the theater. Not surprising though since I had to acquire the services of @ big daddy just to find my baseball.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:05 pm
lol I meant to say Captain America
May 10th, 2008 at 12:23 pm
some people around the net are saying its just fanboy hype and that its “clearly the holographic projector” from earlier in the movie…but looking in the trailer, that same scene is there and in 1080p nonetheless…and no shield…which means to mea at least that it was intentionally digitally inserted after the trailer version.
Plus, if you look at what type of desk it is behind Tony in the trailer, its certainly not fit for a holographic projector, its more of a drawing/drafting desk. which makes it much more likely in all aspects that this isn’t just fanboy hype. ITS REAL.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
I call shenanigans!
May 10th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I think they are going to use Tony Stark in the marvel films, that he is creating these items.
Also be interesting to see what tony stark is going to be like in Hulk and if any other tie-ins are used and which.
But I think that they are just defining the fact that there are other characther are in the same film and universe.
May 10th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
Matthe McCounahey is soooooooooooo wrong for Cap.
May 10th, 2008 at 1:07 pm
i saw it at the top right corner
May 10th, 2008 at 1:08 pm
that is so AWESOME!!!!!!! Cant wait for iron man 2 and an avengers movie and yeah matthew is a really really bad choice for the roll he is way to much of a playboy not a soldier defending america
May 10th, 2008 at 1:10 pm
That’s a hubcap
May 10th, 2008 at 1:35 pm
The shield rules! I recall seeing it in the movie, but didn’t put 2+2 together that it would be Capt. America’s. I thought it was just some random thing lying around. Makes complete sense with the Avengers happening soon.
NOW…for Captain America. Casting Director if you see this:
BEAR GRYLSS of Man Vs. Wild would be the perfect Captain America (even though he’s Euro)!!! Please for the love of Stan Lee don’t make ManMeat McGonnaghey Capt. America…he’s already type-casted as a playboy/goofball/womanizer. You need a bad-ass as the Captain.
Better A-options might include: Daniel Day-Lewis (tho I seriously doubt he’d take the role), Joaquin Phoenix (he could fit the bad-ass mold if he wanted to), Viggo Mortensen could also pull it off. He could use a superhero role. Whomever you pick has to have a typecasted degree of heroic/likeable human character before even going into the film. You gotta have someone with the Capt America chin too. XD
May 10th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
hunter, i know there are worries about mat mc playing cap amer, but there is one good thing to consider: remember how noble and courageous he was in ‘a time to kill’ - if they can recapture that spirit, matt might be just right for the role. of course to that, some are saying it was years ago and why not bring in a younger steve austin - to that i say robert downey jr is about the same age. so keep the hope up, if it happens it could be a perfect fit.
May 10th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
btw, i totally see the star/sheild thing - and if its the sheild thats fucking rad.
May 10th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
can they really pull this off? AVENGERS really?? that would be sick. im just not optmistic that they can be able to do it
May 10th, 2008 at 2:01 pm
@ OC
Really? MM turns a CA flick into an automatic laughing stock. The guy’s a bromance steakhead. The end. Age is the last factor for why he’s completely wrong. While the following actor is a general unknown to fanboys, I think Jon Hamm from Mad Men could pull of the WW2 to present day leap/dissonance fairly well. This guy was meant to play the lead in a comic book film down to the old school facial features. He’s also on the come-up as far as Hollywood films go.
Here’s his imdb: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0358316/
May 10th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Paul Walker would be a awesome Cap. He was great in Pleasantville.
May 10th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
@ Aaron
Paul Walker? What is this, JLA?
May 10th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
hunter
holy shit, i guess my optimism is lost! and i’ll say it again, if rdj is age appropriate for stark, then mm is ok for cap - read the comics, they are close in age in the cannon, so that argument is competely invalid. normally i find you more open-minded, but i do understand what mm has made of his career, i just thought this could be a redeeming point. if travolta can do it after the look who’s talking films, then mm is just fine. there is never a ‘the end’ for an actors career, only a chance to turn a new corner. one or two tarantino/rodriguez films later and we’ve completely forgotten the joke that was mickey rourke. but i hope you rewatch a time to kill, as it was the peak of his career, and showed some of cap’s similar virtues.
May 10th, 2008 at 3:18 pm
Abe Vigoda would be a great Captain America
May 10th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
Not Cap’s shield. People are seeing things…if you look closely the “star shape” is no where near the middle of the “Shield.” Its just a shape caused by lighting from Tony’s Equipment.
May 10th, 2008 at 3:55 pm
@ Hunter
I could see Hamm as a superhero. He has that look to him…
I just want to see what they are going to do with the CA plot. I mean, they probably want to start after they find him unfrozen from that block of ice, but they might want to do a back story…and will they have Bucky in much the same light as Rhodes in IM or as an established sidekick? It’ll be be funny if they have Sharon and Rogers have a bastard kid like the new Superman, even though they actually do in the comic, lol. I just hope they actually give him a villain…I’d like to see what they do with the Red Skull.
May 10th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
Sorry, I went off on a tangent. I think they just want us to go see the movie again on the pretext to see if the shield is actually there :P I’d see it again anyway. The government is supposed to give CAP his shield but since Stark does most of the developmental weaponry I could see how he could be behind its creation.
May 10th, 2008 at 4:11 pm
The shield is there.Christopher Edwards is correct.Stark Industries will be a thread tying the Marvel Universe together.Anyone with the slightest idea of who Jack Kirby was knows that the only hollywood actor capable of this is Matt Damon.
May 10th, 2008 at 4:32 pm
holy shit frunobulax damon would be perfect, absolutely perfect.
May 10th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
It’s a UFO
May 10th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Seems to be in plain sight lying there in that pic.
May 10th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
Sorry folks, but the image it’s fake.
I take this pic from trailer and clearly, only we can see a desk and some papers, nothing more. No shield.
Without zoom:

Also it’s is possible, that the shield was cut from the trailer but i really doubt that. I think that some “genious” use photoshop or paint to win a little of fame.
It’s not very hard, the image was taken from a screener, the quality is very bad, use photoshop was easy.
May 10th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
Ashwilliams: The Shield is in the film, I’ve had friends who have seen it multiple times. The Shield was not in the trailer, and was added afterwards.
May 10th, 2008 at 7:43 pm
Jesus, the shield is in the film and its Capt.’s for sure. I’m staring at a telesync after watching it in theaters no less and its their in all its splendor.
Avengers ftw.
May 10th, 2008 at 7:56 pm
Damon would be awesome, but if a fourth Bourne is in the works I don’t see it happening.
May 10th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
As i say, maybe the shield was cut from trailer or put later, when i saw the movie, i don’t see the shield, that’s no mean that the shield wasn’t there. I have to wait to dvd to see clearly if it’s was the shield or not.
May 10th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
@ ashwilliams
Well said my brother!!!!
May 10th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
being the nerd I am it would stand to reason. Iron man being a hybrid of past, present, cartoon and Ultimate storylines. Why the hell not?
May 10th, 2008 at 10:57 pm
just viewed a pirated copy I have and sure as shit, its right there under his arm. can’t miss it.
May 11th, 2008 at 12:44 am
Spoke with one of my friends from ILM and indeed it was intended to be put there. There is a shield - supposed to be “under construction” for captain america. I guess tony stark builds it.

I totally agree that Damon would do a great job, based on his track record, but if they’ve already signed on McConaughey then it’s pretty much done, right? It’s a shame he’s already type-casted from all the romcom’s he’s been in…then again Damon’s done some comedy as well.
May 11th, 2008 at 3:41 am
Tony Stark…. is… Captain America??
May 11th, 2008 at 9:36 am
aCtDeltAS
I’m assuming your getting that still from the trailer, from which its pretty much been decided that the shield was either erased from the shot for the trailer or added in for the movie. The reason the still slash film shows is slightly blurry with saturated colours is because its a telesync of Iron Man. That is to say a high-quality camera recording of the actual movie synced to a direct stream of the audio. Since the shot is directly FROM the movie and numerous people here are confirming it, I still don’t get how people can debate whether its actually there or not.

It’s a screen cap from a mate’s pirate version. If you want, I’ll upload multiple frames to prove it’s not a PS job.
At the end of the day, it’s only an easter egg.
By the way Hunter (if you’re still reading these comments) check out Jason Lewis from Sex And The City for Captain America: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0507314/
The campaign starts now.
May 11th, 2008 at 4:49 pm
looks like a fucking stretch to me
May 12th, 2008 at 2:31 pm
thanks for giving me a reason to see this masterpiece again. i love this movie
May 12th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
One thing i hate to hear is everyone saying Tony Stark is building the shield, has anyone thought his father may have worked on the super soldier project, it does say in the interview with the reporter from “Brown” that his father helped fight the nazis…” maybe he is taking apart the shield, i mean in the movie, which i saw twice, it was apparent that the shield wasn’t complete, maybe he is going through his fathers things, and that was one of his fathers unfinished projects?
May 19th, 2008 at 1:44 am
What about Colin Ferguson for Captain America. I mean he’s not a major movie star but he’s done more than just television.
AND for Captamerica…”You gotta have someone with the Capt America chin too.”
I think he’s got enough of a chin to pull off the look lol
He’s more over played a lot of roles as likeable caring people: Doctors, police officers, agents, sheriffs etc
May 20th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Definetly not a shield. I have the DL and its not even close
May 27th, 2008 at 8:10 am
Kevin Fiege from Marvel Entertainment has confirmed that it is Cap’s shield.
The idea that Tony’s father built the shield is a good one. “He helped defeat the Nazi’s!”
June 7th, 2008 at 7:47 am
My personal take on it would be that Cap’s shield already existed from the days of WW2. The impossible alloy that comprised the shield is still one of the strongest metals in Marvel’s mythology. So if the shield was found after Cap dissappeared, the government would still own it. A military contractor with Starks pull could probably ask to study it for a classified practical application study (while really using it to investigate the alloys make his own super-armor).
It is either that or he bought it years ago at a Christie’s auction. You know how the super rich can be,
June 11th, 2008 at 2:25 pm
I’m the last person to see Iron Man, which was sweet, but I was anxious to leave and missed the post-credit Fury meeting. Goddammit!
June 13th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
What if Tony’s father built the shield for Cap. America and what if the us gov’t put cap into long term cold storage and now the gov’t is thinking of taking cap OUT of storage and they want Tony to see if he can improve the shield…or merely they are having him take a look at it to better understand it and then improve it if he can???
i am by no means a comic book expert but hey, if marvel is bending story lines here and there already, why not bend it a little more if it means that a good, money-making movie results out of it??
