Ant,

You must have impeccably high standards if you think that the casts of The Covenant, Gossip Girl, and Twilight are all composed of merely mediocre looking people.

Harry Potter and Twilight are constantly compared simply because they are both best selling supernatural YA novels which have been turned into movies. The comparison irks me as well because they cover very different topics, but what can you do?

Also, I understand why Twilight is reminiscent of The Covenant; the young and upcoming casts, the special affects, using the girl as bait... But I really hope, as do all other fans, that Twilight transcends those superficial similarities and conveys the classic tale of a lovestruck couple doomed to face great adversity due to their potentially insurmountable differences.

Ha, that was a mouthful. Sorry.

To answer why Twilight is being compared to The Covenant and Gossip Girl, it's that they cast a bunch of decent-looking (not hot, no way are any of them hot) nobodies to film CW-ey styled crap.

I can understand why you're pissed at the comparisons. I don't think Twilight and Harry Potter deserve to be compared just as much as Evanescence and Lacuna Coil are nothing the hell alike.

Jenna, what good is Edwin's big "wand" if he can't use it.

(Let's see how many people get mad at me for calling him Edwin. *le snicker*)

Joshmayhood, I couldn't have put it better myself.

Good one, Julia. (<---Blatant sarcasm)

Twilight wouldn't intimidate me if Steph herself came up to me and shoved a burning torch up my a**. So, if we don't agree with the Twilight possession (calling it an obsession strikes me as absurd, ya'll are possesed), we are small minded thinkers? If we are small minded thinkers, you all are worse since you are all compelled to retaliate and attack when someone merely says they don't like the trailer or series.

*makes feeble attempt to throw holy water at people* Begone, Twilight demons! Rid these poor emo angsty teenagers of their insipid Twilight obesession!

No. You can't say I haven't read the books. I'm a teenager and a chick that just happens to dislike the attention these mediocre books are getting. Whoopdee effin' doo.

If you have doubts, read the books! I just picked it up randomly in BJ's book section as light summer reading (Twilight) and I was hooked. I ran out that night to get New Moon and Eclipse!! Each day I check the authors website- she posts really great stuff like chapters that were edited out of each book AND she writes new storylines like "what if Edward was the point of view in Twilight?" which is her next project called Midnight Sun. I am thrilled with this series. I am a teacher and I like to keep in touch with what my students are reading. I encourage those who are doubting this movie to read the books!!

I really don't like the poster for the Twilight movie. I don't find them(the alterations to the photo) attractive at all.. To fakey looking I guess... Like a computer animated movie or something. If I only had the poster to judge the movie on or choose a movie to see from the posters I would not choose Twilight....Sad but it is true....I will see the move tho because I really like the books and the trailer is awesome.

OK, so for those who don't know the books or even the basic plot of the film then here it is.

Meet Isabella Swan, new girl to Forks, Washington. There she meets Edward Cullen, a member of the strange Cullen family whom all have similar appearances despite not being related. They're all devastatingly beautiful, pale and have topaz/black eyes. Vampires. Basically it's all about to begin with Edward fighting off the urges to kill Isabella whom he describes as his favourite "brand of heroin" so basically her blood is his favourite flavour. But Isabella falls in love with him as their friendship grows and she pursues the matter more until Edward too falls in love.

So far it sounds like a typical Vampire//Human love story but there are the subtle differences. Stephenie Meyer's take on Vampire myths are good, such as they can come out in the Sun but if they do they're light diamonds and the sun hits off of them into millions of different directions giving the appearance that they sparkle (but blindingly so). But it's more the way the scenes go. There's one scene in the meadow where they fully take their relationship from friendship to becoming a couple. And during this scene Edward goes a wee bit biserk(SP?) and **almost** kills her. And to read it sends chills through your spine.

And then later on when Edward is willing to admit is love for her openly to all, her life is in danger and not to spoil it too much but he gets to taste her blood - and Meyer makes us strain with him, makes us feel him using all his effort not to kill her.

So there. =]
Still not impressed, then go out and buy the book, and then buy the next two too!

Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics, even if you win you're still retarded.

I personally am very excited about the teaser trailer...pretty good for just having wrapped FILMING the movie like a week and half ago :-) And have you seen how many places people can watch this trailer? Myspace, the official twilight website, IMDB, this site, firstshowing.net, a random article in the las angeles times (I suppose because they finished filming the last few scenes there??), youtube, two different places on mtv.com, probably countless other movie sites... and have you noticed how many times it has been watched in ALL of those places?? I'd love it if someone would visit all the sites that show the trailer and count the 'hits' it has just so we can see how many times it has been watched in less than a week :-)

And to some Twilight fans... of course things will be different, it's a movie!!

Um..wow. This is so interesting. Jim has really got me thinking. Usually I get really frustrated by negative comments, but Jim's are so articulate, I cant really dissagree with him. And the Twilighters going head to head with him are great too. (But maybe I am just transfering my feelings for Jim Halpert on to /fim's Jim, like we all do with edward and Robert) :) Great debate!

Hi Duca,

Hmmm okay I guess I see why the Convenant comparison has been made, thought I still stress that the stories are a lot more different then you think, provided that the movie even attempts to keep to the book's story-line.

I agree with you whole heartedly that movie adaptations are never as good as the books they come from. I don't expect Twilight to be any different. I also agree that I cannot comment on the acting until I actually see the movie. I won't base my opinons off of that short trailer (though I was happy with Kristen and Rob, not so much with Kellan Lutz's one-line...but hopefully he'll change my mind)

Having said that... the Convenant was a horrible movie(I do agreee, I suppose, that it wasn't the worst movie I'd ever seen...but it was close, for me), especially when it came to acting. There was a loud call from the fans to put the main character in Twilight as the role of Jacob Black...mostly because of how he looked. I'm so happy they did not, after seeing the movie. He was a horrible actor. (So, no there are none of the same actors from The Convenant in Twilight)

I know you said he had to use his powers to protect his 'love' in that movie, but the whole love story was so shallow and superficial, the actors had no chemistry, and there was no backstory at all to explain why they connected. From interviews I've read from the screen writer, actors, extras, and Twilight lexicon reporters who have been on set, it seems they at least TRY very hard to fit all the essential back-story into the film adaptation. Though, of course, you are right that most of them are invested in the movie and want us to go see it, therefore telling us anything to get our butts in the theater. However, I feel like from all the things I have seen and read that you will be surprised at how deeper the story goes than The Convenant was allowed to go... And the story is much more suspenseful and thrilling towards the end, and from what I've seen of the movie 'footage' of that, it should translate well to the big screen. Have you seen this?

There are some clips from the end fight scenes...

One thing that also separates The Convenant from Twilight is the added demension to the love story that Edward has a HUGE pull to kill Bella. This isn't like Buffy the Vampire Slayer where it seems the close-proximity is not difficult for the Vampires on the show... In this story, there are multiple moments where Edward has to hold his breath or simply run away from Bella because his urges are so powerful. There is not a lot of 'making out' moments, and when they do kiss it is almost scary for them...can they do it without Edward suddenly killing her? So this is definitely a different type of love story then we are used to seeing in movies these days..

So I guess I understand a bit better the whole comparison to The Convenant, but I am hoping and praying and crossing my fingers that the people making Twilight will do it better justice than that. There is so much story to go off of that they should be able to pull it off, but that is in the hands of the movie-makers now. All we fans can do is hope they can at least get it part-way right. :-)

Hi Duca,

Hmmm okay I guess I see why the Convenant comparison has been made, thought I still stress that the stories are a lot more different then you think, provided that the movie even attempts to keep to the book’s story-line.

I agree with you whole heartedly that movie adaptations are never as good as the books they come from. I don’t expect Twilight to be any different. I also agree that I cannot comment on the acting until I actually see the movie. I won’t base my opinons off of that short trailer (though I was happy with Kristen and Rob, not so much with Kellan Lutz’s one-line…but hopefully he’ll change my mind)

Having said that… the Convenant was a horrible movie(I do agreee, I suppose, that it wasn’t the worst movie I’d ever seen…but it was close, for me), especially when it came to acting. There was a loud call from the fans to put the main character in Twilight as the role of Jacob Black…mostly because of how he looked. I’m so happy they did not, after seeing the movie. He was a horrible actor. (So, no there are none of the same actors from The Convenant in Twilight)

I know you said he had to use his powers to protect his ‘love’ in that movie, but the whole love story was so shallow and superficial, the actors had no chemistry, and there was no backstory at all to explain why they connected. There are multiple reasons why I personally have compared the Twilight film to the Covenant. The main reason is that it looks like it. The basic feel of the cinematography, the young cast of actors (I believe one of the males was actually in it), and the school setting. Seeing production photos/footage makes me think of the Convenant in turns of the general look and 'feel' of the film. Also, at the heart of the Covenant was a love story. The one boy has to protect the girl he loves by using his powers and becoming something he never wanted to be. Switch the "magic powers" for "vampire" and the plot (of the movie at least as they are advertising it currently) looks very similar, if executed differently.

The Covenant was not the worst movie in the world, but it is a good example of the state of the genre it's in. Supernatural films/tv shows just aren't what they used to be and fantasy/supernatural films as a whole have been seriously under performing at the box office, but due to the popularity as such shows as Buffy and Heroes there is obviously a audience for it. It would make sense that a company might take a product like Twilight and make it into a movie. Unfortunately it also makes a lot of sense that they would try to... make it more appealing to a mass audience which lately means dumbing everything down so a fifth grader could understand it. When I saw the original trailers for The Covenant I was very excited about it but when I watched it I found it extremely disappointing. Even though it had the potential to be very entertaining because it targeted a 'teen' audience it ended up catering to the lowest common denominator. It wasn't the worst movie I'd ever seen but it would have been nice if they had assumed I had a brain while watching it.

I know you all would like to believe that the movie will be a literal translation of the novel but it's not going to be. With adaptation comes changes, it's how it works, you know? And just because the author says it's awesome doesn't mean it is. Right now she's selling a product, and she's selling it to you. Thus, positivity. All you can do is wait and see.

Can I just ask how such a strong opinion of the movie can be based on ONE MINUTE of footage. Literally. 57 seconds. When I watched the teaser for Speed Racer I was blown away and thought the movie would be phenomenal and look at how it's been critically panned. So you can never know. If one wants to say the teaser looks dumb, fair game. But to say the movie is shitty is ridiculous especially if you call yourself a lover of films. Because any lover of film will reserve judgment until they see the full movie. I just think those that are not into tween films are pre-disposed to automatically hate it and that's just too bad because whether you like it or not, this movie has some sick potential. And not because it will make HP numbers but because the budget of the film was 30M and even Step it Up 2 made more than that at the box office.

I agree with those that argue to leave the books out of it. You're right the success of the books does not translate to success at the movies but you can't ignore numbers. This TEASER had 2M hits in 3 days. This doesn't even account for youtube and other venues. Also, you have /Film covering it bregrudingly. If the movie didn't have potential they wouldn't cover it. Period.

All that matters really is that Robert Pattinson is hot. That alone makes the trailer good. He can bust in my window anytime.

I have an honest question.. for estrus and a lot of others..

Why is Twilight being compared to The Convenant? Seriously? I actually rented it awhile back because of comparisons being made, and was incredibly confused. They have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in common.... That book is about a group of boys who have secret hidden powers but the more they use it the faster they age...

Sooo why are you comparing Twilight to that?? I honestly want to know because this isn't the first time I've seen that comparison made.

Twilight is about a girl who moves to a new town and falls in love with a strange boy... who you later find out is a vampire who is incredibly drawn to the scent of her blood and wants to kill her like he's never wanted to kill someone before... but he resists because he "doesn't want to be a monster" and because she intrigues him.

Soo um where does the Convenant fit into that?
