Yesterday we ran a report about how director Jon Favreau is not yet signed on to Iron Man 2. We noted that most of the stars have contract stipulations which allow up to two-sequels, concluding that Robert Downey Jr. is signed on for the sequel. Well apparently while that is the case, Downey Jr. is not yet a lock.
Marvel Studio chairman David Maisel refused to confirm Downey’s participation in the announced sequel during Wednesday’s rst-quarter financial results conference call. And when Entertainment Weekly asked if Downey was contractually signed to the announced Iron Man sequel and Avengers movie, the star cryptically replied:
“I really don’t know. What I’m on board for right now is the ride home. I don’t want to start talking out of my league, because that would have certainly been my inclination in the past. I kind of know how to keep my teeth together a little better than I used to.”
Apparently since the movie outperformed expectations, THR claims that Marvel will have to sweeten the pot to reward the movie’s star, a common industry practice, before Downey is officially aboard the sequel which he’s already contractually obligated to make. Josh Tyler said it best:
“See, when you or I sign a contract, we are expected to uphold it. But that’s only because we aren’t rich and in demand. When you’re rich and in demand, the rules don’t really apply to you.”
The good news is that Marvel plans on sitting down with Downey and Favreau later this week to talk about a sequel before hiring writers for the project. Apparently Marvel has a general plan for the sequel’s storyline. It’s expected that both Downey and Favreau will return for the sequel.

I don’t understand why everyone is acting like RDJ isn’t coming back or that Faverou isn’t.
The movie made 100 opening. Got amazing reviews wide-spread.
THEY’LL BOTH BE BACK FOR THE SEQUEL.

lol, Peter that Miller person keeps spamming on posts.
But back on topic, It all depends on RDJ’s feelings towards the character. I mean this had to be a cool film to make, and if he cares for the character itself then he will come back. And based on the films success I am sure the studio is aware that if they get a different actor for the sequel that it might be a flop.
I’m pretty sure he will be back, and if not then the trilogy that is known as Iron Man will fall through the cracks and the first one will be the only one that stands out. Bummer

It’s a negotiating ploy. This film is going to make a mint, and Downey & Favreau want a piece of it. You think Favreau wants to be known as Vince Vaughn’s sidekick anymore? He’s big-time now!

Hopefully @ dan.
But then again something could go wrong and it could not happen.

this is the EXACT same stuff we heard about tobey macguire between sm1 & sm2. ‘he wasn’t signed on for sure’ coupled with cryptic quotes from the actor. it’ll be funny to see if these silly rumors go as far as sm2 did - to get ironman it’s own jake gyllenhall/replacement. lets see, how about one of the male leads from grey’s anatomy (i’m sorry, it’s a good show) - that’d be pretty funny. rdj will be back, these kind of stories are just part of the machine.

This is pure bullshit,, Downey was already quoted saying that if they made an avangers movie, he would be the best deal on the bill.. he loved playing stark and would do 12 if he could

Downey Jr. was on Friday Night with Johnathon Ross over her in Britain last week and he said that he was definately signed up for the second film. He said something like, “I had the chance to opt out but enjoyed the first one that much that I signed for the second”.
Of course, he may have just been bullsh!ting!!
