First Look: The Cast of GI Joe [High Res]

Update: We’ve updated this story with high resolution photos that Paramount sent us.

Paramount has released photos of the cast of Stephen Sommer’s live-action G.I. Joe movie.

Destro

Chris Eccleston as James McCullen Destro XXIV. McCullen’s Military Armaments Research System is the largest manufacturer of state-of-the-art weaponry, providing high-tech arms to any side able to meet his price and will incite war where it does not exist. Unfortunately the character photo was taken before McCullen’s face was disfigured, and covered by A swarm of nano-mites, giving him the iconic metallic mask, which allows the Cobra Commamder to control his mind. I think it would have been much cooler to show what Destro looks like in the mask. This photo is just a lame photo of a business man standing in-front of a vault that reads “MARS”.

Storm Shadow

Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow, the white ninja a henchman and adversary for Snake Eyes. Throughout their history, the duo have been everything to one another from the bitterest of enemies, to the most loyal of friends (and blood brothers) who would fight and die for one another. He is the only member of the team to change sides several times, conflicted in loyalties between Cobra, G.I. Joe and his long relationship with his swordbrother Snake-Eyes.

Heavy Duty

Former Lost star Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Heavy Duty, who serves as the G.I. Joe Team’s heavy ordnance specialist with a passion for classical guitars and Bach. He is described as being unafraid of any situation despite heavy enemy fire.

Breaker

Saïd Taghmaoui as Breaker, the team’s original communications officer who has a habit of chewing bubblegum in any situation. He is also familiar with practically every bit of communication gear on the planet.

The Baroness

Sienna Miller as The Baroness. Baroness serves as the COBRA Organization’s intelligence officer and lieutenant to Cobra Commander. In both comic and cartoon incarnations, the ruthless femme fatale has had romantic relationships with Destro.

General Hawk

Dennis Quaid as General Hawk. He looks anything but tough, and the opposite of cool.

Duke

Channing Tatum as Duke, a First Sergeant and field commander who is second-in-command of the G.I. Joe Team after Hawk. At least his body armor looks cool.

Ripcord

Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, ranked Sergeant, an Airborne and demolition specialist of the G.I. Joe Team.

Snake Eyes

Snake Eyes

Ray Park as Snake Eyes, one of the original members of the GI Joe series. Hasbro has released over 30 figures of the character since his debut in 1982. Not much is known about the ninja master’s real identity, as it has remained classified throughout the series. The U.S. Army Sergeant First Class (E-7) is known for his stealth like movements and extensive knowledge of multiple forms of martial arts. Snake-Eyes is romantically involved with fellow G.I. Joe member Master Sergeant Shana M. O’Hara, a.k.a. Scarlett.

Scarlett

Rachel Nichols as Scarlett. Ranked Master Sergeant, red-headed Scarlett is the first female character in the GI Joe action figure line. Her weapon of choice is the crossbow (pictured in the promo photo), and her specialty is counter intelligence.

G.I. Joe hits theaters on August 7th 2009.

Discuss: What do you think?

  • Pete
I guess they don't want ot reveal Destro's look just yet. Maybe they're still working on the design?
  • SUe
Didn't that dude have a silver face and a big collar? Anyway, who cares. this movie and the cartoon both suck.
  • big daddy
"This photo is just a lame photo of a business man standing in-front of a vault that reads MARS" -Peter

    indeed, it is.
  • IronMonger
GI Joe movie = MAJOR FAIL
  • Jeremy
I had to check to see if it was April 1st, because surely this is a joke. This movie looks incredibly lame.
  • Floppy
Okay, Mr. Eko has actually slightly increased my interest in seeing this movie from "pay me and i will go" to "just buy my ticket".
  • Anthony Stark
The headline to this post says it all: L A M E
  • Christopher Marc
I think this project looks a lot better than I was expecting...couldn't be any worse than Transformers...and by the looks of things and from the set reports it won't be the awful CGI orgy Van Helsing was...

G.I. Joe seems to look as faithful it could be to the comic and cartoon for a movie...without it looking too outrageous and silly...

I know a lot of people are writing off Sommers and I have to admit I loathed the director after the Mummy Returns and Van Helsing....yet I'm going to give this one a chance, I hope other people at least wait for the footage/trailers to be released before making judgments....of course thats my opinion...bash away if you want...lol
  • joshmayhood
This looks about as good as Twilight.
  • orange cinema
i just dont understand how the suits who hired sommers to helm this, can look at these photos + the liberties taken with the characters/story, and think that this looks good and that it will be successful. i'm really struggling with their thought process. it's getting close to being as bad as JLA was, maybe even worse. cheers to the reboot in 5 to 10 years.
  • Meli
What is up with Storm Shadow's white PJs? Come on! I know it might not be as easy to redesign in white, but they can do better than this.

Destro - sigh- if they're not ready to show him with his chrome dome
    then I'm not interested.

Heavy Duty - He looks fine.

I still have little hope for this flick even judging it as a popcorn piece
I have little faith in Sommers.
  • Jevon
Storm Shadow looks stupid, which is silly since his costume shouldn't be that hard at all to copy from the comics, i'm a die hard fan of the comic but i'll reserve judgement on the movie for a while
  • Tabor
Umm.. I'll reserve judgement of the whole until I see it, but Stormshadow looks like a low rent badguy from an eighties ninja movie. Also, why do they keep using black rubber jumpsuits to make comic and cartoon characters "serious"?
  • A.J.
Every still shot I've seen has been pretty bad. The
ones of Dennis Quaid and company that released
weeks ago were awful but let's face it, if you saw a
pic of a guy in an Alien costume just walking in a
mall you'd think it looked dumb. I'm not going to
judge this until I see the final product.
  • Captain Awesome
    hahahahaha
  • Storm Shadow looks like a Power Ranger, that could really use some ironing.
  • Floppy
Okay, I read these through RSS and the original post I received didn't have the photo of Breaker (a second one did I thought it was just a double post) so now let me just redact my former post because not even Mr. Eko can get me to see this. EPIC FAIL!!!! (and yes I understand we haven't even seen footage but come on is this a kindergarten play?)
  • Jenbot
they're making this look like some sort of overblown matrix mainstream action piece of shit, how dare they? I would have taken a much more old school american propaganda approach to this, if they fuck up the Cobra organization, I am going to be genuinely pissed. It's so easy to take an amazing original concept like G.I Joe to the bigscreen, but it's even easier to fuck it up, do it haphazardly and just want to make money out of it. F*** this, it's lame, baroness is way sexier and Cobra is B-A-D, it should look way cooler!
  • clarence somerset
im fine with everyone cept storm shadow. looks too cheap a costume
  • Azure Trayl
Destro, could've waited to see him with the mask on; I already know what the guy looks like. Heavy Duty looks amazing! As for Breaker, I don't know what he originally looks like so I can't say anything at all. Storm Shadow....hmmm, how can I put this delicately? Versace called, they want to know where to send the money for their product endorsement (doesn't exactly yell out evil ninja). Baroness....ahhhh, forgive my nitpicking but isn't she suppose to look sultury yet dominating with Raven Black hair? I think that lady from L.A Ink could look more like the Baroness than Ms. Miller here.
  • These are just bad publicity photos, no doubt about that. But honestly, seriously, does anyone have any hope that this movie will be anything other than totally lame? It's GI Joe for goodness sake, how good could it be?
  • pat
"who has a habit of chewing bubblegum in any situation"
great character development to look forward to, "You know what I haven't had in a while? Big League Chew."
  • Bob
    Dear Hollywood,

Please stop taking my treasured and beloved childhood memories and turning them into embarrassingly crappy movie remakes that lose money.

    Thanks!
  • clarence somerset
They should re-design storm shadow. Everyone else is pretty kickass but only SS looks like he's from a b-grade movie. I'd shed that coat and don him a proper ninja attire. Lee Byung-Hyun is a very cool actor. Surely they can make better use of him?
  • Meli
What is with that belt buckle over the Baroness' crotch?? It
looks like a modern day chasity belt! And I'm sorry, but
Sienna does not have the sultry look or body to play this
    character.
  • Floppy
    @ Meli

While that is true, she did have the DSLs that I'm sure didn't hurt her during her "casting".
  • Goobity
...So what's the next 80's toy due for a big budget crap-fest?

I'm sure He-Man is in the works, somewhere.
  • Whats with the Slashfilm snub? Wheres the exclusive?
  • SUe
    @ Peter
Do you really want to see more? I mean, I think we've all had our fill for the day.
  • Captain Awesome
I hope for a Carebears movie where they paint real Grizzly bears in bright colors and have them go around attacking and killing people.

Also, a Thundercats movie would be a furries wet dream.
  • David
Baroness is wearing glasses, I'm back in.

I'm glad they saved some money with borrowing the XMen outfits, but she's wearing glasses. Does she have an accent?

Plus, Captain Awesome's comment about a Carebears movie: brilliant.
  • Chimaera
    @ Goobity

lol, He-Man. Now, THAT would be something. Add in She-Ra with her sword of protection and there's a blockbuster in the making, hahaha.
  • SUe
Also, Peter I think it might have something to do with the fact you typed LAME in capital letters after the headline. Just sayin.
  • Sue: I loved GI Joe as a kid, and was hoping this movie would be good, bu.. well.. these photos are very disappointing. I thought that the leaked batch were just unfinished, but clearly this is just bad. That said, we cover the big geek movies, and this is one of them. So if any new character photos are released, we'll post em for the few people that do care. And oh, so we can make fun of them, which I've actually tried not to do in this posting, because it just seems too easy.
  • SUe
I agree with you. I'm just saying it's probably the reason they didn't send you your 'exlusive'.
  • Captain Awesome
    Update: hahahahahahaha!
  • Me, I'm holding out for Rainbow Brite The Movie!
  • Sue: Very true. But I'm not going to pretend something looks cool to get an exclusive. Truth be told, I was on the fence about this movie. I could have gone either way. But so far everything I've seen from official channels has been disappointing.
  • zachy Legend
Is it really this August? or do you mean 2009?
  • MARS = DOOM = FAIL.
  • Larry Leonardoo
Transformers, GI JOE, what's next? a ninja turtles movie??

    ...oh wait
  • Goobity
This is a disappointment. GI JOE could've been really cool, if they'd have...gasp! Stayed true to the source material. What a concept, I know. Why does the idea of 'update' always mean black pleather?
Speed Racer may turn out to be a let-down, but at least some attempt was made to translate the vibrant look and feel of the original anime.
Have there been any shots of the dread enemy Cobra? Let me guess...black pleather.

    *Sigh*
  • some_dude
Why does everyone think that everything has to have an acronym? WTF is MARS why cant they just come up with an original name and go with that. Outside of the ridiculous look of most of these characters its all the other cheese that will turn this flick into one giant cheddar wheel
  • Hana
I don't like G.I. Joe that much, but I would have gone to see this if looked cool. So far, however I give it a resounding 'blech.' I'll save my money for adaptations that don't blow and are able to remain interesting without completely ignoring their base material.
  • dan
    Fucking serious?
  • Goobity
Hang on, I forgot the Baroness was Evil, and I didn't recognize Destro, what with the purple tie. They were in black, so I assumed they were the heroes.
I rest my case, I guess.
  • some_dude
ohh and do they realize that this is a military unit ... camouflage would have worked much better than another black rubber suit movie
  • wow, peter, i am kind of surprised. didn't really know you were a fairweather fan.

whatever happened to your 5 reasons why gi joe could actually be cool???

    http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/04/22/nontechnolo...

the only cool thing this movie ever did was leak the snake eyes photos. everything else fails.
  • Captain Awesome
    FARMHOUSE.,

The main word in Peter's article there is "could".
  • Joe
Overall pretty dull, but I actually like the look of the Baroness...
