Matthew McConaughey as Captain America

CinemaBlend is reporting that Matthew McConaughey is Marvel Studio’s top choice to play the lead role in Captain America, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th 2011. I’m sure that a contract has not-yet-been-signed, especially considering the project was only officially announced yesterday morning. What this all means is that nothing is set in stone.

McConaughey has been one of the names that have constantly popped up in fan polls over the last few years. He certainly has the physique and look to pull off the role. I’m convinced that Marvel will almost certainly have to update the look of the Captain America costume if they expect the character to be taken seriously.

Discuss: What do you think of Matthew McConaughey as Captain America?

McConaughey would actually be avery good choice for steve Rogers…btw, FIRST! (always wanted to do that, sorry)

  2. Gravatar

Does anyone outside the U.S care about this character?

  3. Gravatar

And Shia LeBouf as Bucky. People outside of the US are going to laugh at this character.

    Marvel needs to stop.

  4. Gravatar

Man thats a terrible choice for Steve Rogers - get the guy that played Stanley in ‘Jericho’

He’s not a big name but I don’t think that would be such an issue.

  5. Gravatar

I think gerard butler would be good, but more importantly, i think the whole comic book movie phenom is starting to get out of control

  6. Gravatar

This movie will be released 2011, so I think things might change. A year before Matt Damon was rumored for the role. We have to wait ’till the official announcement ’bout who’ll be in this role. BTW I think McConaughey would be good for the role.(Downey Jr., Ed Norton and Matthew in the Avengers movie WOOT!)

  7. Gravatar

I think he’s too old. Steve Rogers is supposed to start out as a skinny nineteen year old kid. Even at the end of World War 2 he wouldn’t be older than about twenty-three. They probably shouldn’t go any older than a young looking thirty.

  8. Gravatar

I just can’t imagine what they can do to ground this character in reality in film form. He’d have to go through a complete re-design outfit wise. And we all know devout comic fans will lose their shit if that happened.

Just thinking about some dude running around in a blue costume (with scales), a giant “A” on his forehead and a big round American flag shield is hilarious. It’s such a jingoistic “American” thing that I don’t see this working outside of US waters.

  9. Gravatar

    What about like this?

  10. Gravatar

    OH GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just yelled that outloud and woke up my girlfriend. For the love of GOD, I’m willing to go through her bullshit instead of seeing this douche play Rogers. NO NO NO!

  11. Gravatar

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  12. Gravatar

Wow…a shirtless Captain America. Thats Hot!

  13. Gravatar

the current ‘wolverine origins’ comic series deals precisely with the issue of how silly the costume can appear. the writers used wolvie’s humor to comment on the fact that the costume can look rediculous, but they put a spin on the way it’s observed and it totally worked. it was some really good writing.

i’d be cool with matt mc as cap america, but its still far off and im sure we’ll see some more names.

  14. Gravatar

Seems like a good choice to me, not that a Captain America movie is really up my street……….

  15. Gravatar

    Matthew McConaughey. Sucks.

  16. Gravatar

As long he keeps the WOODERSON accent!!!

  17. Gravatar

I think anyone who has read The Ultimates will tell you there is a way to updated Captain America’s uniform for a modern audience that pays respect to the old and the new. Check it out, of course they’d have to change that a little but it could work. Especially if they made it practical like Batman’s costume in the Nolan movies.

  18. Gravatar

I think Matt could do justice to the role. He’s one of those stars that’s always looks ‘young’ to me, and I think he could pull off Rogers very easily.

As for people outside the US caring about this film - who cares? Most production houses look at domestic sales when deciding on sequels and whatnot. Do you think non-US residents cared about Mr. Truth, Justice, and the American way Superman when it was released? If it’s released and does even close to Iron Man’s domestic performance - I don’t think Marvel will give two cents what non-US moviehouses do.

  19. Gravatar

Matthew Mc. is a huge dope-smoker. Do we really want that playing the role of Captain America. I know I sure as hell don’t!!

  20. Gravatar

Most definitely Yes! My friends and I here at the office were kicking around names just a day ago and he was never consider for Cap. I did mention he would have been a great Matt Murdock for Daredevil. You have my vote for Matt as Cap; this might prove a chance for Matthew to show us more dimension in what he could bring to Steve Rogers first and Captain American second. I wonder what he’ll look like as a dirty blond?

  21. Gravatar

theshieldman2000… are you kidding me? Don’t confuse the “art with the artist.”

I have long felt that by far the most interesting (and least cheesey) Captain America storyline was when Rogers resigned and became The Captain with the black suit, going against the nasty war-machine corporate bureaucrats of the 1980s, who, in turn, get a dumb piece of meat to fill in as the new Captain America.

  22. Gravatar

the only thing I can think of he’s done are Rom Coms. I just dont think he’s a good choice, aside from his age.

  23. Gravatar

Please god no, don’;t ruin what could be a fantastic movie with this man in the suit.

  24. Gravatar

can something be done about his accent…

  25. Gravatar

Dear God, NO! McConaughey plays lightweight himbos. He has no dramatic depth or grit. Can you even imagine this oily male model in WWII?

  26. Gravatar

What’s smoking pot have to do with anything? Using an ex, drunk heroin user didn’t do too bad for Iron Man. Seriously, pot? I laughed out loud at that. We all know smoking pot leads to communism, right?

I think you could start with a 1940’s costume based on the original, and then with some snazzy writing, you could bring him into modern day society, and upgrade the suit. When I say snazzy writing it would have to be 15 times better than that lame Avengers cartoon I watched with my kids the other day.

  27. Gravatar

Not my first choice to say the least… I would say go with Matt Damon if they could. Hell, even go for an unknown as Cap.

  28. Gravatar

No. absolutely not. regardless of looks (which by the way, i don’t think he has for the role), he is not the type of actor for this role. if people are worried about the suit looking ridiculous, imagine how much more so it will be with him behind it. I think an unknown actor would be a better choice, as they have a sort of clean slate, and it worked out pretty well for Star Wars.

if this were the Universe X series, i’d say bruce willis. but as it’s not, i’m not sure who’d be best, just not matthew mcconaughey.

i’ll be very sad if he is the final choice.

  29. Gravatar

As for the guys thinking an unknown actor would be better: Batman, Iron Man and Logan.

Now Captain America is one of the silliest superheroes, do we really want a movie about him? It can surely only please those all-american-types out there.

  30. Gravatar

As for non-romcoms, I guess I liked him in Frailty.

And it’s not like this requires much acting. I think he could be more than adequate in the role, though clearly not a great grab.

And the “clean slate” did not work out for Star Wars. The prequels were horrible and that guy was the biggest reason in front of the camera (though the real blame goes to Lucas).

  31. Gravatar

Whoaaaa that will soooo cool if Matthew is Captain American I would defiantly watch for sure if he’s in it. He freakin’ rocks!!!!

  32. Gravatar

    Matthew McConaughey Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t wait to see him as Captain AMerica. If they decide to choose him. I hope they do!!

  33. Gravatar

    @ Anonymous
i guess i should have specified, i meant the original trilogy, and i agree that the prequels were bad.

Anyway, if they do something with the character of Captain America to make him more believable, i.e. batman, then i think it would be a good movie. i’d just like to see it done with the same care and intelligence of batman begins, and soon the dark knight.

  34. Gravatar

Captain America movie? I agree that the whole superhero movie thing is getting crazy now…. Mcconaughy would be ok I guess. I agree with the person abover me…. he was really good in frailty.

  35. Gravatar

meh he would be alright but i think matt damon would be good too

  36. Gravatar

Captain America likes surfing and the Doobie Brothers?

  37. Gravatar

Y’all are TRIPPING balls on acid or soemthing…..

First off, Captain America is far from silly you unpatriotic Americans. Cap America kicks major ass. I just hope they make his character dark and troubled.

The brighter the uniform the more cheesy it looks, but I hope they don’t make huge changes. And to hell with all of y’all who think a Wolverine costume can’t look cool. Give GDT or someother capable creative team a crack at it and you guys will be eating your shoe in anticipation.

As for McC as Cap America. DOPE. I’m sure these are all the same people who cried foul with they picked Downy Jr. to play Iron Man. Pull your shoes up, and realize you guys know nothing about casting.

  38. Gravatar

NO NO NO NO NO. McConaughy is terrible terrible terrible. capt america is a great character and this douche is one of the worst actors ever. he is a laughing stock. don’t fuck this one up marvel. i have a bad feeling iron man is going to be the only good marvel movie. i refuse to see either a capt america movie, or an avengers movie is this douchebag is cast as the Cap.

  39. Gravatar

all right all right all right, I am going to throw this here shield at yall. No disrespect meant, ya know it’s just my thing. Ha ha, ya let’s do this okay I hope your ready for it.

    FAIL

  40. Gravatar

    HELLS TO THE NO!!!!

    I REPEAT, HELL Fckn NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

don’t do this marvel. It would destroy all the new found respect that you’ve earned. This would be the worst casting decision since Clooney as Batman.

For the Love of god please don’t ruin Cap. And to anyone who would dare compare Downey’s acting ability to that of McConaughey I can only say this: Downey was Chaplin, McC has been in 2 movies with Kate Hudson.

    nuff said

  41. Gravatar

Alright alright alright…this is craptastic news!

  42. Gravatar

As super heroes go Cap does not really have a silly look.

I think what most have a problem with in reality is his very silly name.

I like Gerard Butler for this much much more. Gerard has already proved he can bring extra dimensions to a comic hero. I think if McConaughey played this role he’d actually sap dimension/scope from the Captain.

But you know, his name on a marquee is nearly all their thinking about at Marvel…

  43. Gravatar

    no way!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Gravatar

Maybe the proposed title gives us a hint to the storyline.

Calling it Captain America the “FIRST” Avenger may mean it’s set (at least partially) during WW2. ‘First Avenger” may imply he was around along time ago fighting the bad guys and not the literal first member of a modern day team of super heroes called the Avengers.

Something could happen either at the end or maybe even in the middle of the movie where we see how he comes back in the present day setting up the Avengers movie later that year. Kind of like Austin Powers.

Casting???….I would still prefer Matt Damon…or maybe even Mark Wahlberg.

  45. Gravatar

Matt is a great actor. Hard to picture him in the tights. He could be any worst than Ben Afleck as the Red Devil

  46. Gravatar

Captain America is going to be a hard sell, and a difficult movie to make. The realism of Iron Man and Batman would be hard to duplicate. Captain America as a character would have to be what he started off being - a soldier. His “costume” would have to be somewhat functional. The red/white/blue costume would have to go. The shield would have to be some hi-tech weapon. It could be done, but it would have to be different in some respects from the comics.

Matthew McConaughey could pull off a gritty, soldier/hero character. I like the suggestion of Mark Wahlberg too.

  47. Gravatar

People were pissed when Heath Ledger was cast as Joker…

McConaughey MAY have some dramatic acting skill somewhere that we’ve never seen yet. I hope so. Because he does at least LOOK the part.

  48. Gravatar

Ok, First, I love some superhero movies. Now, I know alot of you all are going to get mad about what I am going to say. But honestly, if Iron Man didnt have Downey, you think it would have been as appealing to outside people that dont know much or care about comics or superheroes? Same goes with Hulk, especially after the failure that was the first, without Norton no one cares. Now there are some die hard comic fans but unfortunately there are not as many as you think. Without big names for these movies, Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, X-Men, Spiderman, these movies wouldnt succeed. Sure they would sell some tickets but not enough to keep the string going of Comic flicks. Unfortunately some of Marvel superheroes, outside of say X-Men, Spiderman, and Hulk, no one really cares about except for die hard fans. So in order to attract new people to the stories or franchises they have to use well known names. In America people know Mathew. He will attract more people to the fold to watch outside of the regular fans. I know what you are thinking, he is not that good of an actor, but I think if you give him the right director, which will be the most important part of Captain America, then he will do a good job. Don’t get scared people. Cap is one of Marvels favorite characters, they will do him right. But in order for Avengers to happen, which alot of people want, or for more Comic flicks to be made, and there alot more some people want to see, you need a known name like a Mathew to be in it. I think he is a pretty good choice. He has the athletic build, and could pull off the hardcore action we need. He has also shown brilliance in acting at times. Just wrong movies and directors have plagued him in the past. Give it a chance. Avengers with him, Norton, Downey, and Jackson as Nick Fury would be pretty cool. All top names, will sell tickets and bring more fans to the stories. In the end, everyone wins, Marvel and fans who want to see more movies. Now if they can only get Thor straightened out with someone with an actor with as big a name as others then they will be straight. Remember, this is one of the reasons JLA wasnt going to make it…… Anthony

  49. Gravatar

I do not like him as Cap. I have nothing against Mathew unlike a some others do obviously but I just do not see him as Cap as I know the character. Well that may just be it right there … if they change the Cap character enough he may be a better fit than I am imagining.

But like I have said before I highly doubt they can pull off a Cap movie without it being a complete camp fest unless they do some serious overhaul on him.

  50. Gravatar

First off, who cares if anyone outside of the US isn’t interested in Captain America? His name is “Captain America”, not “Captain International”. I’m not a nationalist by any stretch of the imagination nor a film financer, but I don’t give half a crap if the movie is appreciated internationally. Just like they don’t make movies in India with the idea of “I hope the rest of the world like this!”.

Second, it’s a comic book movie. So, blue suit or not, it’ll work because it’s comics. Batman, Superman, Spiderman…name them all…they’re all just as unrealistic.

As far as McConaughey goes…we’ll have to wait and see. I think he could pull it off. The accent? The only people who probably care about his accent are those who look down on people with accents.

  51. Gravatar

Uuuuuhhhh….I don’t know. Downey Jr.’s attitude was clearly a good fit for Tony Stark, but that’s because that’s the kind of character he is. Is Captain America really in McConaughey’s capability as an actor? I haven’t read much Captain America, but my guts are telling me he’s a little more in the muscular, manly, all-American sort of direction. McConaughey would make him way too likable and funny, which honestly is going to get boring from Marvel superheroes. Even if he doesn’t act funny, he looks funny, and when he acts serious, it looks campy. Get someone who can pull off serious like Christian Bale or Edward Norton. Then again….ugh, I don’t know. It’s not like anyone’s opinion matters. Either it will be good or not.

  52. Gravatar

My vote is for Stanley from Jericho to be Captain America!

  53. Gravatar

That guy from Minority Report..Neal McDonough would be fucking PERFECT..looks, physique, voice…he is the real deal, man. Tell me he’s not…g’head…I fuckin’ DARE you!!!

  54. Gravatar

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! MCCONAUGHEY WOULD BLOW AS STEVE ROGERS AND DOES BLOW IN GENERAL.

  55. Gravatar

First off, his classic costume is not his only costume. They can easily go with the Ultimates version of his suit which is much more styled to work in the real world. He’s got the bod, but he’s too tan and smiles too much for my tastes.

  56. Gravatar

    nonono no no no NO.

  57. Gravatar

    oh guys, come on…….

to be perfectly honest, i think, while not perfect for the role, mcconaughey would be a good direction to go for. i think he would give the role some, well, depth. captain america in the comics, is quite frankly, a square. and can you imagine what would happen if they took tony stark straight from the comics? id rather not. its all about portrayal. besides, this is definitely not set in stone. it may not happen.

oh and @ Tabor, they said the same about robert downey jr.

as for costume, i think the Ultimates garb would not be a bad direction (loose the wings, but keep the A (”you think this “A” stands for France?))

    hahaha classic

    keep smiling, people…..

    ;-D

  58. Gravatar

Initially, No. Maybe if he lost the freaking accent. I don’t think it applies to the character of Captain America. I’d say Aaron Eckhart would be perfect except his playing Two-Face. I know that’s A DC character, but still. Gerard Butler? Jesus Christ, No. Aaron Eckhart. Prefect. Nice guy. Blond hair. Square jaw. I don’t care if he is playing A DC character. He’s perfect.

  59. Gravatar

What about Josh Duhamel? Kind of going the whole Downey Jr. route of getting someone who is sorta big, yet not huge and not a douche. I just think the dude is fit for the role.

  60. Gravatar

The problem is the POLITICS of it all. Recall that in “Superman Returns” they completely eliminated the “Truth, Justice, and the American Way!” saying from the script. They didn’t want to make it too “American” even thought the Man of Steel is clearly not a Bangladeshi. But there was significant uproar across the country that Superman could be “internationalized” without much thought.

So what of the politics surrounding a character named Capitan America?

Every little subplot will be rightfully decried by patriotic Americans who already detest the anti-America Left running Hollywood. Should the Capitan fight “global warming”? Should he fight Muslim terrorists? IMAGINE the uproar either way!

The only solution would to turn it into a period piece where the Capitan is fighting the USSR, and that would get old. AND, we still have to see how the Russians feel about Indy fighting the Soviets… they may not like it.

The film would be impossible for any Hollywood Leftist to make. And it will not happen. But perhaps if a semi-conservative like Mel Gibson made it, then there’d be a movie worth watching…

  61. Gravatar

I’m with Sean a few responses up: As happy as I am that Nolan snagged Eckhart for Dent, he’d have made one hell of a Captain America.

  62. Gravatar

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO

  63. Gravatar

    @Hunter

yeah McConaughey is a horrible choice, I can’t picture Captain American smoking a bowl and playing the bongo in the nude..lol

Matt Damon is slightly better, but I’d rather see Gerard Butler or
Mark Wahlberg…step into the Marvel Universe

    @Cap

I agree the first Cap America movie looked horrible because both Rogers and The Red Skull didn’t fit into reality. It would make more sense if he lost the shield and just wore some blue/greenish military combat gear…

I just pray they keep the Red Skull as the villain…the whole WWII aspect was great…they could even hint to missions working with Wolverine (Avengers-wise)…

  64. Gravatar

    @ JD:

Captain America is a brilliant movie to make now, given the political climate.
It’s a great story: Guy who was Gung Ho America in WW2, wakes up in today’s America, and it’s a whole different place. Bush, Iraq, companies control politics, etc. (See: Reasons why Brubaker killed off Cap.) But being Cap, he still fights for America, and doing so, finds things that are still true to what he believed in.

  65. Gravatar

Do we even need a Captain America Movie? I have the feeling that they use his name to seel Hurra Patriotism.

  66. Gravatar

    I meant “sell”.

  67. Gravatar

Ah yes, Captain America - The Political Film

  68. Gravatar

Sean Bean! aka Borimir as Captain America!
    Ya think?

  69. Gravatar

I thought Brad Pitt was rumored to play Captain America?

  70. Gravatar

    @YoungZe

That’s kinda the whole point when Captain America was created back 1941 it was all about patriotism because it was WWII. The character was more about fighting for justice, there was a bunch of underlined propaganda like everything had back then. Hell even Bugs Bunny cartoons had anit-Nazi and Japanese messages. I think it would be cool to watch a superhero fight Nazis. They really haven’t done a superhero movie that wasn’t in present time. At least it would be better than a Ant-Man movie. I love Edgar Wright, but that kinda sounds like a flop unless it’s a comedy.

  71. Gravatar

Marvel - don’t ruin one of my childhood hero’s! McConaughey does not have the acting chops to pull this off. Agree with others mentioned like Butler, Damon, or Wahlberg. MM would be a tragedy to a great American icon.

  72. Gravatar

@Christopher Marc: Yeah, it would be awesome if the whole movie would play in WWII, but i don’t really want Cap to fight Talibans ‘n stuff. :?

  73. Gravatar

    @YoungZe

Who said he would fight Talibans? Iron Man fought terrorist but they were Mandarin’s group. So they really haven’t gone that route yet, and I’m sure they wouldn’t. It’s still a fantasy universe.

  74. Gravatar

@Christopher Marc: Nobody said that he would fight Talibans, but i still fear it. :?

  75. Gravatar

Indiana Jones already beat Captain America in fighting Nazi’s

    ;)

  76. Gravatar

    @Captain

Indy never really beat Nazis, just stopped them from antiquing…lol

  77. Gravatar

    ha, touche’

  78. Gravatar

FUCK NO. NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO.

  79. Gravatar

Personally I love the idea of a Captain America WW2 movie in the style of Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan. That’s when Cap made the most sense and beating the crap out of Nazi’s is something that no one can really be against. It worries me however, that in this age of PC thinking and touchy-feelie, that Cap is an idea whose time has come and gone.

It would be a very interesting challenge writing that script. So far I have to say I trust Marvel to do right by their character, until proven otherwise.

  80. Gravatar

McC is a bad choice. Plug in someone like Josh Duhammel. Whoever came up with that is a bloody genius. he’s got the mid-west likability and a dash of conservative swagger. He’d be excellent.

Also it would be great if the first act set-up was him getting thawed from the ice and waking up in modern day.

  81. Gravatar

why dont we have Triple H pla Thor, too

  82. Gravatar

Ok, I can guarantee you this, the film might tell the backstory of him fighting nazis and starting there, but it will almost definitely end up in the present. I mean they are making an Avengers movie you all. He is one of the leaders, and unless they time warp everyone else to the past then guess what, he will be in the present fighting terrorist. Probably not taliban but it will be on the order of Iron Man. Suit will definitely change. Probably not all black like they have ruined many other characters in movies, but it will change subtely. As far as Aaron Eckart is concerned, and I must say I like Batman but I am a Marvel fan through and through, not going to happen. He is DC, Marvel will not get him for two reasons, A) he is with Batman and they have another movie planned and he probably will be one of the villains, B) he works for DC, Marvel has built a production company now and they dont want anyone whatsover to think that they had to get someone from DC to succeed. Plus, he dont look all that Captain America to me sorry, I know most of you all that are commenting on this are all holy Batman fans. It aint going to happen you all, just drop it.

Matt Damon is cool, but, unfortunately, nothing against the man, but this aint Batman and Robin, ala George Clooney being to short, Damon is to short to play the character.

Someone above said Brad Pitt, yeah thats cool also, but lets see, the price tag to bring him along, and yeah theres the deal of him being in Avengers also, and possibly a sequel to Captain America. Its to damn pricey people. Way to much, I think he is demanding somewhere in the 20 mil plus range now. Not going to happen neither.

Lets see, Gerard Butler….. I cant see Marvel spending that much money on a person that really aint that well known. Sure we know him, but not alot of other people do. And if you read my above post earlier you will see why it willbe a more popular name. Sure maybe not a better actor then Butler but a more popular name to establish Captain America and build off of him. This is also why it rules out almost everyone else that you all are just throwing names out there to do it.

Mark Wahlberg is probably about the best possible candidate that anyone has even mentioned that could do it. But honestly, if you think he will do a better job then Mathew then I think you all are mistaken. Honestly you all, Mark Wahlberg aint that good of an actor. My opinion I know, but look at his movies and just watch him. Everyone thinks that Mathew cant act should watch some of Marks movies, he aint much better if any at all. Sure got the build, possibly to short, but has the build, and might be able to have the look, but I dont think he good for the part. The best movie I HAVE SEEN HIM IN is Shooter and that movie pretty much sucked at the box office.

Look around, ask some people, especially women what they think about Mathew. He is on the fronts of magazines all the time in the grocery stores. Word of mouth will make this movie popular whether the acting sucks or not. We need word of mouth to build this franchise like I have also said in previous post. Avengers doesnt do good unless the box office for Cap does good. Period. Someone, whether you dont like his at home spot smoking or whatever habits he has had in the past, like Mathew will make this movie sell with the right director. I mean, as far as that is concerned, Downey Jr has had a past way more recorded the Mathew when it comes to drugs and alcohol you all. No one is knocking him now are we. No we aint. And as far as whether he can handle the part, anyone here seen him buff up for Reign of Fire. He did a good job in that movie. Acting was a little bland, but the almighty god Christian Bale was in that movie also and his acting wasnt up to par neither, he acting will depend on the director. I cant stress that enough. Accent easily fixed, he will work with a acting speech coach, not bring a huge price tag with him, and can build off of him a future that will also contain Avengers….. Think about it you all….. Anthony

  83. Gravatar

    NOOOOO!!

While he has the physique, he’s doesn’t have the acting chops to pull off what I hope would come out of Marvel’s film adaptaion.

They should just skip the whole awkward early 50’s storyline.

Ther perfect adaptation for me, would be half-wwII and half of him being discovered frozen years later, and coming to realize that American’s biggest enemy isn’t NAZI’s anymore, but its own governemnt.
He doesn’t fight for “America” anymore, he fights for the people, and their rights, thereby pitting him against not just foreign baddies, but the baddies within our own society (crooked politicians, military, etc.) But it’s of course a very rude awakening for him.

  84. Gravatar

No, lol, Triple H will not be Thor. Yes he looks like Thor… ALOT, but I am sorry, if Triple H comes then so will WWE, its part of the deals they have now with tehre wrestlers. Sorry I do not want to see another damn WWE film. They all suck, everyone of them. Terrible acting, terrible directors, terrible marketing, just terrible everything. Plus I really dont think Triple H could actually act. Let him stick to wrestling and running WWE, which I think he really is in real life now from marrying Vince’s daughter. He has the look totally, but WWE and his acting skills are why we havent seen him in a Conan movie yet. Which, I think would be a btter movie for him. I guarantee you that Marvel will not make that mistake…. Anthony

About Gerard Butler well look at 300 and he’s also head lining another soon to be blockbuster “Game”. So don’t dismiss him, he’s more well known that Kevin McKidd (Thor) is.

    @AnthonyWC

Mark Wahlberg: you might want to go back and rent Basketball Diaries, The Corrupter, The Yards…and the movie he got an Oscar nomination for The Departed….

No offense have you ever watched one of his movies?

  87. Gravatar

    @AnthonyWC

The only decent job McConauhey has done acting-wise was in A Time To Kill and Dazed & Confused…both movies were ten years ago…he really hasn’t done one good movie since…

sorry for so many responses to your post…just pissed me off I guess..lol

  88. Gravatar

Adam Sandler would be great as Captain America and they should cast Pauly Shore as Bucky, Now that would make a hell of a flick!

    @ Christopher Marc

Haha no probs, like I said these are my opinions, read above if you want, so dont get mad lol, but anyway, I own, The Departed, Basketball Diaries, Dazed and Confused, and A Time To kill, and have seen the rest you mention, but like I said my opinion, and The Departed was good, but was really carried by the others in cast in my opinion, and Basketball Diaries is as old as the Mathew flicks dude, lol, so that shouldnt be a comparison, I never said he wouldnt be a good choice, I actually said he was the best choice others had said, but is acting is on par with Mathew, sorry if you dont want to accept it but it is. Look at like Planet of the Apes lol. He is a good actor just not great, and so is Mathew, but they will not be there for the acting because the director in the end will make the acting great if it is a great director. That has been my point throughout my post. As fas as whoever you named above as Thor, nothing is comfirmed, and yes he is way more well known then that guy. I think that is a terrible choice also for Thor. He wont be Thor when it comes down to it. Thor has to be well known also, especially with the budget they are throwing around right now for that movie, like 250 mil, they dont want that one to bomb believe me lol. But, back on topic, Mathew will be MY choise for Cap, if not then yes Wahlberg, as long as there is a great director for either of them, if not movie sucks, will sell tickets either way but yes it will suck. But please read my whole post ok lol, These were my opinions and I have said so above and I didnt knock Wahlberg like I did the others lol….. Anthony

Oh, and The Departed is one of my top 5 favorite movies ever. Actually a movie I like to watch pretty often. But that movie wouldnt be what it was without Leonardo or Damon. My opinion also sorry….. Anthony

    @AnthonyWC

right on, good points…don’t get me wrong, they’re my opinions also..lol..but come on what acting ability does McConaughey really have?….you didn’t really defend that, just how people know what his name is and what he looks like with his shirt off….I’m more interested in who the hell they’ll get to direct to be honest…

thanks! respectful banter is very rare here

Yeah I know, same to you dude, I appreciate the same gestures, thank you, thankfully this place isnt as bad as my other fovorite movie site, or at least was AICN’s lol. If it was I wouldnt be here. But Mathew was pretty good in that other movie that I can not think of the name of right now…. Frailty thats it. That is a good movie also, and I think he did a good job of acting in that one. Thats a movie if you havent seen then see that one. I also think that he just hasnt had the right directors in movies, the same with Wahlberg except for the Departed, but like I said, I like Shooter, was surprisingly good lol. I need to buy that one but like I said I think Mathew could have a break out role with this movie. Just directing has to be the major part of it. My opinion….. Anthony

Matthew McConaughey cannot play anyone other than Matthew McConaughey and a Cpt. America movie would require slightly alternate reality that would be disrupted by his presence. Also, he is one of the most grating actors to watch that I can think of. There are other big stars that don’t inspire such hatred among sentient people, why not choose one of them? Hell, Dane Cook would be better.

Captain America is no less ridiculous than any other superhero - he just has to be done correctly. It’s absurd to try to make these things seem plausible in reality - all that matters is that they are plausible in the reality that the film supposes.

One thing I love about super-villans, I get older… they stay the same aaaaggge~~~ Yes they do. Wait, what?!

  95. Gravatar

please dont give him the part look around a bit ,i kind a leaning toward aron eckhart or nathan fillion

liike shia as bucky good idea

  96. Gravatar

Remember when Sam Raimi said he’d back over Freddie Prinze Jr. with a car before he’d let him play Spider-Man….. we need that car over here for McConaughey. NOW!!!

  97. Gravatar

If he can get rid of his “Southern” style of acting, then he might be good for this role not to mention this guy is 38 years old, but I do reckon a recognised actor needs to play this role someone like: Mark Wahlberg, Jensen Ackles or even Paul Walker could fit the role of Captian America.

  98. Gravatar

that would suck. it would also be box office ppoison because the target audience for a matthew mconawhatever movie is completely different to one for a superhero movie. he’s like the american hugh grant.

    they should pursue matt damon.

  99. Gravatar

    HELL TO THE NO!!!

    BULLSHIT!!!

    This guy’s an ASSHOLE!

    Captain America?? NO FUCKING WAY!

    Kiss my ass!

Paul Walker is teh way to go.

  100. Gravatar

    F*CK this idiot!!!

and paul walker? what the hell… no need for captain america movie anyway, if these are the possibilities, then it’s enough him to be appear in the avengers film…

i don’t know what marvel thinks, it sucks.

  101. Gravatar

My pick would be Ryan Renolds (Van Wilder), the guy is tall and cut and seems to have a serious side when he needs it.

As far as the story line goes: Set the entire movie in WWII, He is a Army Lt. that is picked for his bravery during battle to have the super soldier serium and he becomes Captain America. He is sent to lead a squad on a mission to kill a Nazi who wears a mask (Red Skull) who plans on nuking Washington. As far as his costume goes, a slightly stylized Army uniform from WWII with him using his Shield and a cowl of some sort. The climax of the movie is of course him either being frozen in the artic after riding the missle or somehow being cryogenically frozen by accident. Cut to a funeral and the Bucky saying good bye (played by Pual Walker) THE END.
After the credits, have Cap waking up at SHIELD HQ next to Dr. Banner and Nick Fury and they do a 3 min intro into the Avengers movie. Then in The Avengers Movie you can introduce his modern uniform.

  102. Gravatar

NOOOOOOOO. Please no mathew mcounahay as captain america. He is a terrible actor. Captain america is the key character in order for the avengers to work. NO MCAOUNAHY!!

  103. Gravatar

This is just getting ridiculous…There is a new superhero comic adaptation film every month. What ever happened to people coming up with their own shit? Hollywood sucks. McConaughey sucks.

  104. Gravatar

Neal McDonough is the ONLY way to go with Cap.

  105. Gravatar

I don’t think McConnaughey would be terrible. But he wouldn’t be _awesome_. Downey Jr was awesome. Ed Norton is going to be awesome. Whoever they cast needs to stand up against that.

What about Daniel Craig as Captain America? Or does it need to be an American actor?

  106. Gravatar

    Hi Guys!

I’m not an American and I don’t even live in the USA; but I love Captain America. I grew up reading this comic book along with the rest of the Marvel Universe when I was a kid. In fact, now, I’ve started reading the Ultimate Universe titles as well.

So, if you want to know if it’ll do good overseas… the answer is… YES!

As for Mathew Mc playing Cap… I’m still trying to absorb that idea. But then again; I didn’t think that Robert Downey Jr. could pull it off as Iron Man… How wrong I was!

  107. Gravatar

i hope the pick a tough guy and not a pretty boy…and they better not ruin the movie and make it liberal trash!!!

  108. Gravatar

I loved watching Cap America when I was a little kid back in Mexico. So I do believe there will be major interest from crowds outside the US. As far as M. McConaughey playing Cap America…. NO WAY! Matt D. Would be a better fit…

  109. Gravatar

If anything why would the people want to choose some one who talks like they’ve just had a stroke. Second. I don’t ever recall Cap talking out the side of his mouth like Massy. If it were anything like that it would be just like casting Nicholas Cage as Ghost Rider. You can’t teach old tarts how to be good actors. It just comes naturally and unfortunately for these guys they just blow a**. And unfortunately for Steven Johnson, his movies suck a**. He’s the Uwe Boll of comic films. I mean first you make one bad film, Daredevil, then you try to redeem yourself with an even worse film, Electra, and then you finally ruin your career with Ghost Rider. Thank god. I hope he never touches a comic film again, especially this one. That is pretty much a little bit of what I ‘d have to say about this film. So far I think Marvel is on the right track and we will see how things go with the Incredible Hulk and Ant Man. If they are anything like Iron Man I think I will have faith in their studios with who ever they decide to choose for directing and casting.

  110. Gravatar

I like the guy, but I just can’t picture Captain America. But then again, who would have thought Downey could have pull it off in Ironman?

  111. Gravatar

2011 umm matt’s getting a little old i mean don’t get me wrong he has a nice body but come on there has to be some one else

  112. Gravatar

OMG. Matt is One Sexy Papi & can watch him do just about anything he wants to.

  113. Gravatar

Matt may be able to pull it off in my opinion, But if they want the perfect cap they should cast me, I can’t act but i am captain America. And to all who are hating on cap, he defeated the nazi. And the costume….. shit is legit. All Americans should be creaming their pants for this one, i know i am. I gladly say if you don’t like Captain America your a fucking communist.
