Matthew McConaughey as Captain America

CinemaBlend is reporting that Matthew McConaughey is Marvel Studio’s top choice to play the lead role in Captain America, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 6th 2011. I’m sure that a contract has not-yet-been-signed, especially considering the project was only officially announced yesterday morning. What this all means is that nothing is set in stone.

McConaughey has been one of the names that have constantly popped up in fan polls over the last few years. He certainly has the physique and look to pull off the role. I’m convinced that Marvel will almost certainly have to update the look of the Captain America costume if they expect the character to be taken seriously.

Discuss: What do you think of Matthew McConaughey as Captain America?

  • Happy_Evil_Dude
McConaughey would actually be avery good choice for steve Rogers...btw, FIRST! (always wanted to do that, sorry)
  • M&Co
Does anyone outside the U.S care about this character?
  • Captain Awesome
And Shia LeBouf as Bucky. People outside of the US are going to laugh at this character.

    Marvel needs to stop.
  • RaulZ
Man thats a terrible choice for Steve Rogers - get the guy that played Stanley in 'Jericho'

He's not a big name but I don't think that would be such an issue.
  • Toaster
I think gerard butler would be good, but more importantly, i think the whole comic book movie phenom is starting to get out of control
  • Nitram
This movie will be released 2011, so I think things might change. A year before Matt Damon was rumored for the role. We have to wait 'till the official announcement 'bout who'll be in this role. BTW I think McConaughey would be good for the role.(Downey Jr., Ed Norton and Matthew in the Avengers movie WOOT!)
  • Tabor
I think he's too old. Steve Rogers is supposed to start out as a skinny nineteen year old kid. Even at the end of World War 2 he wouldn't be older than about twenty-three. They probably shouldn't go any older than a young looking thirty.
  • Captain Awesome
I just can't imagine what they can do to ground this character in reality in film form. He'd have to go through a complete re-design outfit wise. And we all know devout comic fans will lose their shit if that happened.

Just thinking about some dude running around in a blue costume (with scales), a giant "A" on his forehead and a big round American flag shield is hilarious. It's such a jingoistic "American" thing that I don't see this working outside of US waters.

    What about like this?

    OH GOD NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just yelled that outloud and woke up my girlfriend. For the love of GOD, I'm willing to go through her bullshit instead of seeing this douche play Rogers. NO NO NO!
  • DREW
    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
  • Wow...a shirtless Captain America. Thats Hot!

the current 'wolverine origins' comic series deals precisely with the issue of how silly the costume can appear. the writers used wolvie's humor to comment on the fact that the costume can look rediculous, but they put a spin on the way it's observed and it totally worked. it was some really good writing.

i'd be cool with matt mc as cap america, but its still far off and im sure we'll see some more names.
  • Seems like a good choice to me, not that a Captain America movie is really up my street..........
  • EFQ
    Matthew McConaughey. Sucks.
  • As long he keeps the WOODERSON accent!!!
  • Ben
I think anyone who has read The Ultimates will tell you there is a way to updated Captain America's uniform for a modern audience that pays respect to the old and the new. Check it out, of course they'd have to change that a little but it could work. Especially if they made it practical like Batman's costume in the Nolan movies.
  • Indytim
I think Matt could do justice to the role. He's one of those stars that's always looks 'young' to me, and I think he could pull off Rogers very easily.

As for people outside the US caring about this film - who cares? Most production houses look at domestic sales when deciding on sequels and whatnot. Do you think non-US residents cared about Mr. Truth, Justice, and the American way Superman when it was released? If it's released and does even close to Iron Man's domestic performance - I don't think Marvel will give two cents what non-US moviehouses do.
  • Matthew Mc. is a huge dope-smoker. Do we really want that playing the role of Captain America. I know I sure as hell don't!!
  • Azure Trayl
Most definitely Yes! My friends and I here at the office were kicking around names just a day ago and he was never consider for Cap. I did mention he would have been a great Matt Murdock for Daredevil. You have my vote for Matt as Cap; this might prove a chance for Matthew to show us more dimension in what he could bring to Steve Rogers first and Captain American second. I wonder what he'll look like as a dirty blond?

theshieldman2000... are you kidding me? Don't confuse the "art with the artist."

I have long felt that by far the most interesting (and least cheesey) Captain America storyline was when Rogers resigned and became The Captain with the black suit, going against the nasty war-machine corporate bureaucrats of the 1980s, who, in turn, get a dumb piece of meat to fill in as the new Captain America.
  • the only thing I can think of he's done are Rom Coms. I just dont think he's a good choice, aside from his age.
  • Ryan
Please god no, don';t ruin what could be a fantastic movie with this man in the suit.
  • pat
can something be done about his accent...
  • NOOOO!
Dear God, NO! McConaughey plays lightweight himbos. He has no dramatic depth or grit. Can you even imagine this oily male model in WWII?
  • Albert Brodsky
What's smoking pot have to do with anything? Using an ex, drunk heroin user didn't do too bad for Iron Man. Seriously, pot? I laughed out loud at that. We all know smoking pot leads to communism, right?

I think you could start with a 1940's costume based on the original, and then with some snazzy writing, you could bring him into modern day society, and upgrade the suit. When I say snazzy writing it would have to be 15 times better than that lame Avengers cartoon I watched with my kids the other day.
  • Lloyd
Not my first choice to say the least... I would say go with Matt Damon if they could. Hell, even go for an unknown as Cap.
  • Joel
No. absolutely not. regardless of looks (which by the way, i don't think he has for the role), he is not the type of actor for this role. if people are worried about the suit looking ridiculous, imagine how much more so it will be with him behind it. I think an unknown actor would be a better choice, as they have a sort of clean slate, and it worked out pretty well for Star Wars.

if this were the Universe X series, i'd say bruce willis. but as it's not, i'm not sure who'd be best, just not matthew mcconaughey.

i'll be very sad if he is the final choice.
  • As for the guys thinking an unknown actor would be better: Batman, Iron Man and Logan.

Now Captain America is one of the silliest superheroes, do we really want a movie about him? It can surely only please those all-american-types out there.
  • Anonymous
As for non-romcoms, I guess I liked him in Frailty.

And it's not like this requires much acting. I think he could be more than adequate in the role, though clearly not a great grab.

And the "clean slate" did not work out for Star Wars. The prequels were horrible and that guy was the biggest reason in front of the camera (though the real blame goes to Lucas).
  • Whoaaaa that will soooo cool if Matthew is Captain American I would defiantly watch for sure if he's in it. He freakin' rocks!!!!
  • Matthew McConaughey Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't wait to see him as Captain AMerica. If they decide to choose him. I hope they do!!
  • Joel
    @ Anonymous
i guess i should have specified, i meant the original trilogy, and i agree that the prequels were bad.

Anyway, if they do something with the character of Captain America to make him more believable, i.e. batman, then i think it would be a good movie. i'd just like to see it done with the same care and intelligence of batman begins, and soon the dark knight.
  • Jason
Captain America movie? I agree that the whole superhero movie thing is getting crazy now.... Mcconaughy would be ok I guess. I agree with the person abover me.... he was really good in frailty.
  • matt
meh he would be alright but i think matt damon would be good too
  • Hunter Stephenson
Captain America likes surfing and the Doobie Brothers?
  • The Jezzus
Y'all are TRIPPING balls on acid or soemthing.....

First off, Captain America is far from silly you unpatriotic Americans. Cap America kicks major ass. I just hope they make his character dark and troubled.

The brighter the uniform the more cheesy it looks, but I hope they don't make huge changes. And to hell with all of y'all who think a Wolverine costume can't look cool. Give GDT or someother capable creative team a crack at it and you guys will be eating your shoe in anticipation.

As for McC as Cap America. DOPE. I'm sure these are all the same people who cried foul with they picked Downy Jr. to play Iron Man. Pull your shoes up, and realize you guys know nothing about casting.
  • david
NO NO NO NO NO. McConaughy is terrible terrible terrible. capt america is a great character and this douche is one of the worst actors ever. he is a laughing stock. don't fuck this one up marvel. i have a bad feeling iron man is going to be the only good marvel movie. i refuse to see either a capt america movie, or an avengers movie is this douchebag is cast as the Cap.
  • Kip
all right all right all right, I am going to throw this here shield at yall. No disrespect meant, ya know it's just my thing. Ha ha, ya let's do this okay I hope your ready for it.

    FAIL
  • lee
    HELLS TO THE NO!!!!

    I REPEAT, HELL Fckn NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

don't do this marvel. It would destroy all the new found respect that you've earned. This would be the worst casting decision since Clooney as Batman.

For the Love of god please don't ruin Cap. And to anyone who would dare compare Downey's acting ability to that of McConaughey I can only say this: Downey was Chaplin, McC has been in 2 movies with Kate Hudson.

    nuff said
  • Robert
Alright alright alright...this is craptastic news!
  • JFK
As super heroes go Cap does not really have a silly look.

I think what most have a problem with in reality is his very silly name.

I like Gerard Butler for this much much more. Gerard has already proved he can bring extra dimensions to a comic hero. I think if McConaughey played this role he'd actually sap dimension/scope from the Captain.

But you know, his name on a marquee is nearly all their thinking about at Marvel...
  • ryan
    no way!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Chico
Maybe the proposed title gives us a hint to the storyline.

Calling it Captain America the "FIRST" Avenger may mean it's set (at least partially) during WW2. 'First Avenger" may imply he was around along time ago fighting the bad guys and not the literal first member of a modern day team of super heroes called the Avengers.

Something could happen either at the end or maybe even in the middle of the movie where we see how he comes back in the present day setting up the Avengers movie later that year. Kind of like Austin Powers.

Casting???....I would still prefer Matt Damon...or maybe even Mark Wahlberg.
  • Matt is a great actor. Hard to picture him in the tights. He could be any worst than Ben Afleck as the Red Devil
  • artgood
Captain America is going to be a hard sell, and a difficult movie to make. The realism of Iron Man and Batman would be hard to duplicate. Captain America as a character would have to be what he started off being - a soldier. His "costume" would have to be somewhat functional. The red/white/blue costume would have to go. The shield would have to be some hi-tech weapon. It could be done, but it would have to be different in some respects from the comics.

Matthew McConaughey could pull off a gritty, soldier/hero character. I like the suggestion of Mark Wahlberg too.
  • Dr_Mecha
People were pissed when Heath Ledger was cast as Joker...

McConaughey MAY have some dramatic acting skill somewhere that we've never seen yet. I hope so. Because he does at least LOOK the part.
  • AnthonyWC
Ok, First, I love some superhero movies. Now, I know alot of you all are going to get mad about what I am going to say. But honestly, if Iron Man didnt have Downey, you think it would have been as appealing to outside people that dont know much or care about comics or superheroes? Same goes with Hulk, especially after the failure that was the first, without Norton no one cares. Now there are some die hard comic fans but unfortunately there are not as many as you think. Without big names for these movies, Batman, Iron Man, Hulk, X-Men, Spiderman, these movies wouldnt succeed. Sure they would sell some tickets but not enough to keep the string going of Comic flicks. Unfortunately some of Marvel superheroes, outside of say X-Men, Spiderman, and Hulk, no one really cares about except for die hard fans. So in order to attract new people to the stories or franchises they have to use well known names. In America people know Mathew. He will attract more people to the fold to watch outside of the regular fans. I know what you are thinking, he is not that good of an actor, but I think if you give him the right director, which will be the most important part of Captain America, then he will do a good job. Don't get scared people. Cap is one of Marvels favorite characters, they will do him right. But in order for Avengers to happen, which alot of people want, or for more Comic flicks to be made, and there alot more some people want to see, you need a known name like a Mathew to be in it. I think he is a pretty good choice. He has the athletic build, and could pull off the hardcore action we need. He has also shown brilliance in acting at times. Just wrong movies and directors have plagued him in the past. Give it a chance. Avengers with him, Norton, Downey, and Jackson as Nick Fury would be pretty cool. All top names, will sell tickets and bring more fans to the stories. In the end, everyone wins, Marvel and fans who want to see more movies. Now if they can only get Thor straightened out with someone with an actor with as big a name as others then they will be straight. Remember, this is one of the reasons JLA wasnt going to make it...... Anthony
  • some_dude
I do not like him as Cap. I have nothing against Mathew unlike a some others do obviously but I just do not see him as Cap as I know the character. Well that may just be it right there ... if they change the Cap character enough he may be a better fit than I am imagining.

But like I have said before I highly doubt they can pull off a Cap movie without it being a complete camp fest unless they do some serious overhaul on him.
  • First off, who cares if anyone outside of the US isn't interested in Captain America? His name is "Captain America", not "Captain International". I'm not a nationalist by any stretch of the imagination nor a film financer, but I don't give half a crap if the movie is appreciated internationally. Just like they don't make movies in India with the idea of "I hope the rest of the world like this!".

Second, it's a comic book movie. So, blue suit or not, it'll work because it's comics. Batman, Superman, Spiderman...name them all...they're all just as unrealistic.

As far as McConaughey goes...we'll have to wait and see. I think he could pull it off. The accent? The only people who probably care about his accent are those who look down on people with accents.
