Warner Bros has released three minutes of Wachowski Brothers’ Speed Racer online. Think you’ve seen the crazy cinematography of the wacked out action sequences in the trailers? Think again. This new clip shows how it’s all cut together with insane non-stop transitions and I’m actually surprised at how much it actually plays like a cartoon. Check out the clip below.
Discuss: What did you think?

DAMN
C..A..N.. N..O..T.. W..A..I..T

* Note to self…score some mushrooms for Friday night..
May 5th, 2008 at 1:11 am
That was horrible
I expected more from those guys, the clip is just… too cartonnish, even the transitions seem loaded. Overall, it seems to have to many distractions and very little content. Just like the last two matrix movies.
I actually liked animatrix a lot, and was hoping for *that* type of cartoonish instead of this.
Bahhh…

I must be high, I thought this was out already O_o

Not too keen on Australian actors, that being said I’m from New Zealand.
Anyway, Sparky… He seems about dry. But At the same time its frogivable. Still going to see it. Looks great.

“Not too keen on Australian actors, that being said I’m from New Zealand.”
haha, okay.

This is going to be Tizight. because all the cool people say tizight.
Fail.

I wasn’t impressed at all. I going to wait for the reviews before I see this one.
May 5th, 2008 at 4:42 am
Meh!
They really want a video game from this one eh?
Still looks like a terrible film.
May 5th, 2008 at 4:55 am
Seeing it in context made me want to see it even less. Looks like Spy Kids 3.
May 5th, 2008 at 5:11 am
Captain Awesome:
Austrailians and New Zealanders have this weird rivalry thing going.
Also from the beginning I have said this will be the suprise of the summer. I think people are gonna love it!
I am very happy this clip shows Scott Porter’s character Rex Racer. I am a huge fan of his since his superb acting job on the television series “Friday Night Lights.” I cannot wait to see more of him in the film!
“I give this movie clip 5…. out of 5 stars” what happened to sexman by the way
May 5th, 2008 at 7:43 am
I will wait for the dvd

1. That kid is annoying as shit.
2. That first scene looks like that man is a pedophile
3. This looks really stupid
4. This looks really stupid
5. This looks really stupid
Nobody will see this movie, biggest flop of 2008.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:18 am
I wish they were releasing it in 3D Imax. Oh and if hunter doesn’t review this movie on some sort of psychedelic he has no cred.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:22 am
Looks kind of lame.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:49 am
“Insane non-stop transitions”?
This is the biggest pile of suck that I’ve seen in quite awhile…
May 5th, 2008 at 10:10 am
Like peoples’ reactions here, the reviews are pretty clearly split between those who love it and those who hate it.
Here are a few of the more positive reviews ranging from 3 to 5 stars:
“Thrilling” and “triumphantly visual”. (Empire)
“Visually astonishing…groundbreaking triumph”. “The Wachowskis back on groundbreaking form”. (IGN UK)
“The term ‘rollercoaster ride’ was all but invented to describe it.” (Den of Geek)
“The kind of visual spectacle that demands to be seen - and preferably on the biggest screen you can possibly find.” (Film4)
“An awesome, heart-thumping super-kinetic spectacle which will have you gripping the sides of your seat in terror and exhilaration.” (The Telegraph)
“Speed Racer is a blast from start to finish. Five stars.” (Cole Smithey)
May 5th, 2008 at 10:16 am
Wow, talk about split opinions! I have been in on this since the first trailer. I liked that clip, but the computer screen didn’t do it justice, which is why I will see this movie on Friday, or maybe Saturday.

Looks so corny :(
I love the original show, I wish they had kept a little more of the 60’s style in the race track, costumes, etc. It’s actually kind of a strange sci-fi 80’s thing. Looks really tacky. Perfect casting, bad production design choices.
If I wanted to play a video game I could just stay home. That’s probably what I’ll end up doing. I don’t like the world they created for this. It’s just super corny, way too Spy Kids, like someone pointed out above. I hope they targeted this toward a G rated audience, because I doubt it will appeal to older folks.
May 5th, 2008 at 10:55 am
I want my three minutes back.
This isn’t even going to be worthy of putting on my Netflix queue. I’ll happily wait for it to arrive on basic cable where it belongs.
May 5th, 2008 at 10:57 am
The acting is terribly broad. I guess they are truly playing to the kids. Smart move WB since Iron Man has already won the older audiences. Might be this years Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
May 5th, 2008 at 10:58 am
This is bad, very very bad. Only thing that could save this film is computer generated imagery. Pretty colours though.
May 5th, 2008 at 11:19 am
It’s going to be crap if you’re over 5 years old.
I doubt I will see it.
May 5th, 2008 at 11:34 am
GO GO MARIO KART!
May 5th, 2008 at 11:46 am
YAAAAAWWWWWWNNNNNNNN, cant wait to see it on fox or abc
May 5th, 2008 at 12:27 pm
Again, I don’t see why people are so negitve about Speed Racer. I think the clip showed that we are in for a wild (popcorn) ride and should be enjoyable to watch. I’ll be watching this on the big screen for sure.
May 5th, 2008 at 12:36 pm
I honestly don’t understand the hate towards this movie.
Yes, it’s aimed at kids. It’s rated PG. And I think that decision was brilliant. It’s Speed Racer. Not Iron Man. It’s going to have the same loony, feel-good, family cheer as the cartoon, but blended with a bar-raising, acid trip visual spectacle that will appeal to adults. Kind of reminds me Willy Wonka in that regard.
All the haters here, I’m certain, either have never seen the cartoon, or don’t have an open mind enough to allow themselves to enjoy something kid-oriented.
Fine. Wait till Dark Knight comes around, and let the Speed Racer fans have their movie without your hateful complaints poisoning the fun.

Visuals=Amazing
Content=ZZzzzz…
Bad acting. Corny lines. No humor. Cheesy music.
My review would be “A Crayola box of epileptic seizures…..Fun!”
Holy Canoli…

I can’t wait till this comes out and blows everyone away. I don’t know what everyone is thinking but this just looks fanfuckingtastic. This scene is obviously in the first 15 minutes of the film… IMAGINE HOW FUCKING GOOD THE REST IS GONNA BE.
sorry if the scene didn’t wow you. up to this point people have had an open mind and can see what great potential speed racer has or theyre sour jerks who think it looks gay.
The Wachowski’s created the Matrix!!!!!! COME ON! They’re ACTION GENIUSES. They’re amazing filmmakers regardless of how bland and boring the sequels were… they’re talanted and this looks like it might be groundbreaking. I’m fucking there.
And yes I will be stoned out of my mind.

@ Colecovision:
“Bad acting. Corny lines. No humor. Cheesy music.”
Um, No.
The acting style in the movie is in line with the spirit of the cartoon. IE: fast dialogue and wide-eyed expressions.
Corny lines: Again, spirit of the source material. Which happens to be an anime from the 70’s. To say the lines are corny is like saying the dialogue in Lord of the Rings is too Old English.
No humor: I see you haven’t been watching the clips. There’s plenty of silly gags, like ninjas flying out of windows. Hell, there’s even a monkey! I’d say this movie is not in danger of taking itself too serious.
Cheesy music: Are you complaining about the Speed Racer theme song?? How can you bitch that the music in the movie is the theme from the cartoon?? And as for the score - it’s Michael Giacchino who’s a bloody genius! Haven’t you listened the score from The Incredibles?
Holy Canoli, indeed.

I’m tired of vacillating on this movie. Last I checked I was hating it, but you know what? I’m just going to give it an open mind and the benefit of the doubt when I go. It’s going to be what it’s going to be.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
This is an epileptics worst nightmare.
This is what happens when crayons throw up.
May 5th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
Visually, it looks pretty creative. Pass or Fail, I want to see what they do within this style.
Again, I want replicas of all the cars (and I swear I’m not a toy geek).
Face it, the audience for this is 40+(nostalgia) and their kids. Families are going to line up and, in that light, Speed Racer is going to be a hit.
May 5th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
They turned it into F-Zero! Where’s Captain Falcon!?
