Right now, there are two beloved /Film readers at opposing ends of the MacGyver spectrum. One is planted in a computer chair bathing in the brain light of the largest makeshift explosion known to man and the other is thinking “EPIC FAIL” and then typing it in the comments with the eerie calm of having just completed a hate manifesto. Gizmodo reports that MacGyver creator/writer/badass Lee David Zlotoff is planning a big budget MacGyver: The Theatrical Movie. Zlotoff managed to retain the rights years ago, no doubt using duct tape, wire and a Pabst can in the process. I need a nap.
And no, I’m not leaving the fans of Richard Dean Anderson hangin’ with a box of tissues, but Zlotoff didn’t specify whether the man who inspired SNL’s MacGruber would be back as Angus. My guess? Haha followed by a sigh. Then again, Anderson has his long running, geek-centric Stargate gig and starred in an unbelievable seven seasons, letting his signature character rest after 1994’s TV movie MacGyver: Trail to Doomsday. Zlotoff said he’ll have full control over the film’s direction, so expect a similar tone to the series (not really sure what that tone was to be honest) and not a tepid summer comedy starring Matthew Broderick. More on the new MacGyver as it develops; ignore that loud ticking sound in the meantime. Thanks to /Film reader Jonny of the web famous love nest RedandJonny for the tip.
Discuss: Yes, MacGyver is too good for Page 2. Who should play the mulleted, manly wiz in a feature film? How about Tom Selleck? Anyone have a good MacGyver joke/pun? I clearly do not.

Isn’t Tom Selleck actually older than Richard Dean Anderson?? How would that make sense?

another homerun for nostalgia, after x-files,indiana jones.
(its keep getting better innit?).
I doubt that not many young generations knew how cool richard mullet fix do anything dean anderson was.

Richard Dean Anderson could still do it. He kicks ass in NCIS.
go MacGyver!
May 4th, 2008 at 4:30 pm
isnt it mark harmon on ncis?
May 4th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
More like MacGAYver, who’s with me?
May 4th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
Mathew Broderick would make a pretty good MacGyver. I have no idea where that came from for me, but it’s solid.
THink of the gadgetry involved in order for Ferris Bueller to get the “sick boy in bed” ruse just right.

If fox and mulder got to remain as fox and mulder. Its only fair that macgyver get to remain macgyver.

MacGyver is on NCIS????
Patty and Selma are stoked.
May 4th, 2008 at 6:10 pm
im pretty sure they tried a remake of this not too long ago on tv with jared padalecki
May 4th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
frank, they were making a spin-off/sequel series about Angus MacGyver’s nephew.
I’ll only see this movie if it’s set in continuity with MacGyver now and stars Richard Dean Anderson. Making a remake would be a mistake.

I’m sorry, but I think they already made a new MacGyver and that was the Super Bowl commercial.
May 4th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
Matthew - I consider the commercial proof that it still works. Bring on the RDA-fronted movie!
May 4th, 2008 at 8:37 pm
TBH… I’ve never seen one episode of MacGyver.
May 4th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
jonny, if you’ve seen one you’ve seen ‘em all.
May 5th, 2008 at 1:06 am
Thanks for the warning.
May 5th, 2008 at 5:41 am
How about a young MacGyver - the early years. Shia LeBouf anyone?
May 5th, 2008 at 5:55 am
Dan, that’s so true. They were so great when I was a kid, I’d be scared to watch one now for how cheesy they must be. Remember the one where he made the ruby laser? That was cool. :-)
May 5th, 2008 at 6:49 am
lol I’d definitely go see this. I love that show.
and yea Selleck is 5 years older than Anderson…

Dear Hollywood,
Please stop taking my treasured and beloved childhood memories and turning them into embarrassingly crappy movies that lose money.
Thanks!

I would rather see a big screen adaptation of MacGruber. MacGuyver was always a good concept, even though it was spoofed and joked about by every comic during that time. I just don’t think it is Movie material. A comedy, Austin Powers-ish, MacGuyver like MacGruber would be better. With the help of some Laser Cats “Lock and Load!”
May 5th, 2008 at 8:38 am
@ Quenfis
Please keep all Laser Cats comments within the bounds of Page 2, thanks. ;)
@ pat
I wasn’t really suggesting that Magnum P.I. play MacGyver in a big budget feature film in 2009/10, but thanks for the background check on Selleck.
May 5th, 2008 at 11:14 am
@valerie Shia LeBouf?? Uh, never! Richard Dean Anderson is the only one for this role. Unless if they take a new Actor for this role.
May 5th, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Dear Bob,
All your treasured and beloved childhood memories (including every season of MacGyver) are available on DVD, perfectly preserved for your enjoyment. We even took out all the commercials for you! Feel free to stay home and watch those instead of seeing our “crappy movies”. Nobody’s twisting your arm.
Even if we make the crappiest of crappy movies, it does not alter the original episodes you love so well. Those will always be there, just as you remember them. In light of George Lucas’ recent work, you should be happy we actually released all the source material on DVD without tinkering with it first! The temptation was there, believe me.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a meeting about the new “Manimal” script to attend.
Respectfully yours,
Hollywood

yeah! MacGvyver movie!! Murdock better be in it or there will be hell to pay!
May 5th, 2008 at 7:08 pm
the only thing better than a MacGvyver movie would be if Chuck Noris played the role of the antagonist.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:06 am
never watched it

Richard Dean Anderson would have to play MacGyver otherwise I wouldn’t go see the movie.
