Free Comic Book Day

Geek Deals: Free Comic Book Day

Today is the only day each year when you can walk into your local comic book store and walk out with an arm full of free comic books. Sure, most of the selections are probably not worth paying for in the first place, but who knows, you might discover something really cool.

For those of you who don’t know, Free Comic Book Day is a single day when participating comic book shops across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their stores. Free Comic Book Day is held the first Saturday in May each year. This year’s event takes place on May 3rd 2008. Different stores have policies on how many free comics you can receive, but you will receive at least one free comic if you enter a participating store location. Check with your retailer for their policies and plans for FCBD.

You can visit the Free Comic Book Day website to see some of the comic books they will be giving away this year. There will actually be a few great books available like Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman #1 which is loved by most everyone aside from myself (I just find the whole thing way too ridiculous… even for Superman), Mike Mignola’s Hellboy/B.P.R.D., Alex Ross’ Project Super Powers, and many others.

Chadwick: I like my superheroes based in some sort of reality.I like the superhero and supervillains to be the most fantastic thing in the book. When you read All Star Superman there are like dinosaurs destroying metropolis in the background, and all sorts of ridiculous type of stuff like that. It just turns me off big time.

Im with you with the realism aspect of comic books (my fav. being batman: year one, prettay realistic), all star superman definately could of left out those dinosaurs… but I really enjoyed what grant morrison has done with revamping the superman story, especially the bizarro subplot! grant morrison’s all star superman actually has drawn me closer to the superman story, something I really did not think would be possible (I usually stick with batman stories)
