Crank 2

Earlier in the week it was reported that Corey Haim had been cast in Crank: High Voltage. And now we have our first look at Haim in action, at the receiving end of a beat-down by Amy Smart, who returns as Eve, the girlfriend of Chev Chelios (Jason Statham).

Meanwhile, Collider has a huge scoop: Directors Neveldine/Taylor have decided to film the entire movie using consumer grade video cameras. Since the duo used the new RED camera to shoot their last film Game, everyone just assumed that they would also be using the same technology for this film.

“We love red cameras, we’re going to shoot with them again, but it’s like shooting a 35mm film and you need a ton of AC’s and it takes a lot of time for set up,” admits Mark Neveldine. “With the cameras we’re using we literally can point and shoot and we have the same image quality that we had on Crank 1.”

The two cameras Neveldine/Taylor have employed for Crank 2 are:

Canon HF10

Canon XH-A1

Canon HF10 ($890.19 on Amazon)

  • 1/3.2″ CMOS Sensor, RGB Primary Color Filter
  • Capture high-defintion video to 16 GB hard drive or SDHC cards
  • Dimensions (WxHxD) 2.9 x 2.5 x 5.1 in
  • Weight 13.4 oz
  • Pictured Above

Canon XH-A1 ($3,298.99 on Amazon)

  • Three 1/3-inch 16:9 CCDs (1440 x 1080)
  • Tape Recording
  • Weight 5 pounds

“We can put these cameras in places that people haven’t and we can put 10 of them in places where people haven’t,” says Mark Neveldine. “And one of the things it allows us to do is we’re doing this moving bullet time camera rig where we take 8 HF-10’s and we put it on a light weight piece of speed rail and I can roller blade and skate around Jason Statham as he’s blasting down the street with a weapon and capture just rad images.”

Brian Taylor added “This is an ADD movie so we should have ADD cameras, so you know the idea of like moving the camera in outrageous ways and being able to destroy cameras without blinking an eye is more important to us than, you know, sort of having this filmic image.”

And just because they are shooting the movie on the same digital video cameras you can buy at Best Buy, doesn’t mean that the film will look like your home movies.

“We have tricks and methods of shooting with them to make it look better than you would think for a camera like that,” admits Taylor. “It doesn’t look like Cloverfield. It’s not supposed to look like home video. It’s going to look like a movie, but it’s going to look like a movie you’ve never seen before.”

Sounds pretty f’n cool.

the red camera isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. the thing needs constant software updates and will never be “fully” completed. and just because you shoot hd or digital, doesn’t mean you need less AC’s. sometimes it may even involve more. either way, you can make excellent hollywood visuals using “indie” grade cameras. when it comes down to it, shots and lighting are the real strong points in terms of quality.

i swear to god neveldine and taylor crawl into my head and steal my dreams at night.

He look like a crank addict wait he is. I know his hair is not really in a mullet they just made him look like that.

  4. Gravatar

I love that picture of Amy throwing him onto the car!

Damn. That ass shot is frickin amazing.

Crank was underwhelming to me, except for Amy Smart getting railed in front of tourists. I’m surprised people care about this. Or Transporter movies. Or Jason Statham starring movies.

    @ kfizz

If that wasn’t a mullet I’d have Haim scalped and wear it in a newly posted Slashfilm photo before I went to jail.

Jason Statham should never work again. The guy has the acting range of a cucumber.

  9. Gravatar

    @Jimbo Stewart

Statham may well have no range.

His one look is “You’re about to get your ass kicked.”

Which, frankly, is what I want in this kind of film.

Awesome. Brings hope to indie film makers around the world who are “embarrassed” by their Best Buy bought cameras. As mentioned above, it takes more than just the camera to make a movie look good — lighting being a key element.

    Don’t diss Statham.

I didn’t like the Transporters, but in the realm of action stars with hair troubles he is up there with Willis. Good point Peter Simpson.

Honestly, the only thing good that came out of this article is the revelation of Amy Smart’s ass. Kudos for posting it.

  13. Gravatar

Amy Smart’s ass is quite sweet indeed

  14. Gravatar

I agree with the all the Amy Smart Ass comments. But Crank was the only movie I’ve ever stopped watching half-way through.

  15. Gravatar

    Sounds awesome.

no i mean did that to his real hair im saying its a wig. His real hair is under the wig the short part.

    @hunter
    maybe named “mullain’t?”

And I think you might need to change this sentence:
“And now we have our first look at Haim in action, at the receiving end of a beat-down by Amy Smart…”

If you look close, he’s sitting in the background. I recommend this:

“And now we have our first look at Haim’s inaction, enjoying the sight of his double at the receiving end of a beat-down by Amy Smart…”

I, for one, liked Crank. It was a no holds bar, adrenaline fueled (pun intended) action flick. Jason Statham may not be able to act his way out of a paper back, but he sure can kick it’s ass. And in years full of people trying to pull off the oh so serious “I am an amazing actor, look at how amazing I AM!” I am looking forward to a film where you just see people get the shit kicked out of them. A lot. And Amy Stuarts ass. Jesus christ the things I would do to that ass. :)

Amy Smart* Sorry. Invest in edit. Please.

I hope this movie will be positif for Corey and not the opposite.
Already the hair cut is not really great, if ithere is a person who try to fuck with him. I wish him the worst and he will lose a lot. because Corey, beside his past, he is just the only one who made the lost boys.

*****PS : Corey Fieldam did what johnyy depp did with poenix river., they are just batard, to destrye thoses other brilliant actors******

I could not possibly agree more with whatever the hell Shirley said.

  24. Gravatar

So he’s got hair like dog the bounty hunter(it’s a character DUH!). Corey’s always been a good actor.I never miss a a Statham movie.
    Good Luck to you guys.

First off I thought the 1st Crank movie was amazingly captivating..super-duper intense.[amy smart is a given for any movie] My thoughts on this new movie really have no baring on wat it will turn out like..So I will wait and see!I do like the fact that Corey Haim is in it;even if its possibly a small part?I have been a Corey fan all the way thru and its nice to see him working again..its funny how easy it is for people to be judgemental ..when despite every difference that we share as human beings..we all should be given another chance to rise above the things that bring us down.Movies are made for our entertainment and like music and art it is all in the same.We open our minds and the vision makes the message comprehensive, like art can depict.Hopefully this movie can represent something more than our money in their pocket?

Can we just refer to it as “Smart Ass” from now on? Ohhh see what I did there?
