I mean, 2 took a lot of the Gremlins world and made jokes of it. I don't think you could easily undo all that and go back to a purely dark film. I suppose you could, but Gremlins 2 would always be in the back of your mind. "Aren't the same guys who had a musical number?" Then again, maybe someone could pull off a purely dark movie and could be fun. I for one liked a lot of the comedy in the 2nd movie, though I wouldn't want a 3rd movie to be a clone of the 2nd one. Maybe a combination of the two, dark but with some humor thrown in here and there. I guess thats kinda how the 1st movie was actually. :P Either way I'll watch it.
