Touchtone Pictures (aka Disney) has released the first trailer for their upcoming Kevin Costner Summer comedy Swing Vote. The film actually has an interesting but totally unrealistic concept. Basically the events of the presidential election come down to the vote from one man. Of course the execution of the idea looks like the usual sentimental feel good Disney-level story. There’s nothing like combining a family film with politics… Watch the trailer below and tell me what you think in the comments.
Official Plot Synopsis: “Bud Johnson (Costner) is an apathetic, beer-slinging, lovable loser, who is coasting through a life that has passed him by. The one bright spot is his precocious, over-achieving twelve year-old daughter Molly. She takes care of both of them, until one mischievous moment on Election Day, when she accidentally sets off a chain of events which culminates in the election coming down to one vote…her dad’s. SWING VOTE is a comical look at the journey of one father and daughter who discover that everyone has the power to change the world.”
Swing Vote hits theaters on August 1st, 2008

Wasn’t this scripted by the guy who played Jonathan on Buffy? Looks kinda fun.

“Everyone has the power to change the world.”
No. Wasn’t this filmed in New Mexico?

Execution makes this look better than the synopsis would have you believe. Good cast and polish. Decent film that you may have to see while visiting your parents and not completely hate.
I still stand by statement that if Dennis Hopper was running for Prez, I’m pretty sure it would be to take over the world and harvest souls. He’s Creepy man.

Okay, just checked IMDB. Seems I was wrong. He wrote the similarly themed ‘Recount’.

I’d say the premise is cool. Nice to imagine how you could get people to bow to your whims if you were in that situation. But I have to say that for me the final verdict will rest on whether Bud goes D or R and the reason that finally tips the scales. Depending on how that situation is handled, there could immediately be 50% of the electorate turned off immediately. Would be easier to just bash W for 90 minutes as he’s got the highest disapproval rating EVAR.

Looks like Costner might have put a leash on his ego and is actually a little charming in this. I’ll probably watch this on DVD.

I don’t really care for the story, but it could be an OK family film I guess.

looks cool, and i’m hoping for costner to re-establish himself as an A-lister.
i’m going to use this moment to continue my own campaign to get costner cast as the lead in qt’s inglorious bastards (if and when…), i see him as the tom hanks-like character from private ryan. i think qt+kc+ig= another great tarantino resurection.

Sounds like crap. Yep, complete crap. This film should be listed as a fantasy because it’s impossible for an election to come down to one person, even if they are a loveable loser.

Well, the Democratic candidate will be decided by some very regular folks who are superdelegates. Once upon a time, being a super delegate was a completely pointless, random job that had zero clout or recognition.
Sounds like a fun premise that is kind of relevant. Plus I like Costner.

The trailer seems to be a fun movie. Since this is election year and neither Democrat can get enough delegates to be the nominee without the superdelegates, I think this film is going to fit in wonderfully well. It is almost like Kevin could see into the future when he signed on to do this movie.
