JJ Abrams is a hack. I was an idiot for falling for his stupid viral campaign, and all I saw was the same mysterioso-dripping-with-emotive-meaning bullshit that he hawks to anyone with cash to throw his way.

Hand-held camera is a valid style? That's like saying that filming a movie with the lens cap on is a valid style. There's a huge difference between trying to create a realistic effect and inspiring motion sickness from the first frame.

And we're supposed to believe that the slacker walking around a major disaster zone with a hand-held camera isn't more annoying than than it is a service to anyone who improbably would find the tape? Even the loser hero at the end says it: "You probably know more about this than we do".

A sequel isn't going to be any better, unless it really tells a story.

I finally convinced my partner to see it (she hates "scary" movies) and we both thought it was brilliant. Having a more realistic take on alien movies is a breath of fresh air - don't anyone dare compare this to Godzilla. "Realistic" takes on "unrealistic" events are what's lacking in many of today's sci-fi/horror films... I think the fact that this movie was created using a normal person's perspective, not your "traditional" cinematic one, made it all the more terrifying to watch, and tends to scare audiences just because they don't find out what's going on until the guy holding the camera does. It basically appears to be a home movie - shot without a script - which is incredibly effective in Cloverfield, and I believe would do just as well in a sequel.

As for doing "something unique" with this shooting style, well, he could give the camera to a journalist, but most people hate listening to journalists for too long. Good luck with making this decision, Abrams!

Dude, screw you all who are saying nobody cares who didn't like the movie. I've got to ask one question; if you didn't like the movie why are you looking stuff up like this one it? Cloverfield was an amazing movie. Great acting and visuals, and it made you seem like you were watching footage of someone who was actually in the movie. I'm not sure how many options there are for a sequel, but they would need it to be amazing to hold up to the first.

I think John Carpenter said it the best years ago when he said : "the american public has become brain dead when it comes to viewing films" I cannot stress enough that CLOVERFIELD was one of the most exciting and realistic films i've seen in years. I grew up watching a lot of TV in the late 70's and 80's and most of my favourite films come from that era. I've never been a big fan of special effects...always felt the acting and story should carry the movie. But i was wrong with this. EVERYTHING about this film was stellar. I love the story....the monster was very creepy (anything that walks with its arms like that....maaaan.) the characters were believable and the special effects were mind blowing. The humor was done just right without overdoing it ( * think: Will smith from independence day...ugh!) and overall I have to say...one of the best movies this year. Looking foward to the sequel although not getting my hopes up. CLOVERFIELD is a movie for a person that is intelligent and still has a little of that magic called IMAGINATION left in their minds....

I really loved Cloverfield, just watched it again and waited for the bit right at the end, filming form the 'big wheel' very interesting. I think it would be great to see a sequel, would be great to see how the other guy got on with the video camera on the bridge! But also to see who the millitary planned attacks on the monster. Would also be cool to maybe start with the end of this film... 'Classified...blah blah blah' then focus on the people watching it, maybe (very likely) the monter is still alive and they think the 'film' shows some way for them to kill it. What ever they decide to do, im sure it will be great, if they dont do a sequel, I would be dissapointed but they have done a great film anyway!

first 15 minutes i was going to bin it, then i realised what the hell are all these trailers about so i waited - some students having fun then " WALLOP", it really kicks in. The scene where the statues head comes crushing down, then the roar which by then you know this aint no explosion baby. The camera action was cool but i got a bit dizzy at times as if i was running with them. i would of like to see more footage of the beast and his freaky parasites, but i think the sort of love story was quite cool. i hope the next one moves on from the camera idea, unless they can make it that special who knows. maybe 2 or more of the beasts next time. I still think the beast could of come from the explosion in the sea ( the tanker),or maybe thats just me. anyway excellent film, different and a shit hot twist to it.

Okay so I've been stuck in Iraq and finally came back on R&R to see my family. I picked up Cloverfield just out of curiosity. I loved it. I didn't take it seriously at first and thought I had wasted my money on some crap B film about college brats and such... so I was really surprised when the story took a hardcore twist. If there is a follow-on to this, which I'm sure there will be as good a film as this is, I'll be in line. I just hope to get a little more storyline next time.

read Tyler G. comment :
he is right the bridge scene with the two POV's
but then if you notice there is someone else filming behind the head of the statue of liberty (when it falls out of the sky)
it seems like the same person that would be cool if it were that perspective to intersect the movies twice rather than once

i'd love to see a film that pulls from everything that went on in the viral marketting. It would also be pretty cool to see a different POV or to see a different city get ripped up.

How long would it take that monster to tromp all the way to Chicago?

Oh and btw the studio might have been a bit apprehensive about the sequel after the boxoffice dropoff in the second week but after solid international gross and if the dvd sells well there is no doubt that they will want a sequel.

I really hope they make Cloverfield 2 soon. Cloverfield was the most fun I've ever had at the movies and the build-up to its release was the most exciting ever. I've read rumours on fansites that it was going to be released in the summer of 2008 but that is not likely now since apparently Matt Reeves is first going to make the movie he was going to make before when JJ pulled him on the cloverfield bandwagon. But whatever they do, whenever they do I hope it suprises us.

I really hope they make Cloverfield 2 soon. Cloverfield was the most fun I’ve ever had at the movies and the build-up to its release was the most exciting ever. I’ve read rumours on fansites that it was going to be released in the summer of 2008 but that is not likely now since apparently Matt Reeves is first going to make the movie he was going to make before when JJ pulled him on the cloverfield bandwagon. But whatever they do, whenever they do I hope it suprises us.

yea that is one of his ideas about the sequel. i read on comingsoon.net that during Cloverfield, u briefly see a man on the bridge filming something. HUD turns to see what it was and films it a little bit (its the burning oil tanker) and when hud unzooms and turns away, you can see that same guy only now he is filming Hud. he said that to him "that is two stories intersecting right there." it could be pretty awesome to see someone elses point of view on it. maybe the guy could be there to film the creature emerge from the water and tear off the Statue of Liberty's head. and maybe at the end he could be in central park, or near it to see the bombing happen and the creature (supposedly) die. but then again so would the character with the camera....
