Judd Apatow, get out of the way. Paramount Pictures has purchased a spec screenplay by Andy Richter Controls the Universe producer/scribe Jay Dyer for JJ Abrams to produce via Bad Robot. But this isn’t the typical JJ Abrams project. And by typical, I mean to say typical of the last few years which have been filled with sci-fi, spies and genre projects. In this post-Cloverfield world, many people forget that JJ Abrams began in the business with scripts for Taking Care of Business, Regarding Henry and Forever Young or Abrams first critically acclaimed television series Felicity. I think most writers would agree that Abrams strength is actually in the personal interaction between his characters.
Back to the news story: Abrams will produce Hot For Teacher, a story about three high school boys who vow to have sex before they graduate (Superbad meets American Pie); one of the teens plots to seduce a hot teacher (Dawson’s Creek?).

From explaining the “Mystery Box” to making a teenage sex crazed high school movie? Bah. Don’t make me lose respect for you J.J. What “new” material can come from this? I hate to be a downer, but this story line is getting tired. I guess I would just expect a little something more from J.J. Maybe there is some vortex or worm hole in the school locker room that allows them to time travel and explore sexual encounters across time and space. Wooooosh

I am a huge fan of JJ Abrams and Bad Robot. Although I’m very excited about hearing about this project I hope Abrams does not go too much into the comedy/romantic comedy genre. He has two more movies lined up that are comedies/romantic comedies. That is too much comedy from Bad Robot. If you look at JJ and his production company’s record their sci-fi/genre stuff is what has been the biggest critical and commercial success. 4 of his biggest hits (Lost, Alias, Cloverfield, MI:3) are all genre projects where his relationship/comedy stuff has flopped (What about Brian, Six degrees were both major flops) Felicity was an exception . My point is that JJ and his production company knows how to do genre stuff, they get it. They should not be wasting their talents on comedies. One comedy every once a while is fine but I hope they don’t go overboard with it. I’m much more looking forward to the Untitled Josh Marston/JJ Abrams supernatural thriller, Fringe, Star Trek, Aladygma (if it exists) and the Dark Tower movie.
