The Spirit Movie Poster. Sick!

Update: Watch The Spirit Teaser Trailer Here.

Lionsgate just released the new one-sheet for Frank Miller’s The Spirit featuring the film’s signature catchphrase, “My City Screams,” spelled out in noir-ish sooted city brick. Really well executed, don’t cha think, and this is merely the early lead-up to the movie’s January 2009 release. I’m sure the marketing department won’t like to hear this, but I’m getting a slight Darkman vibe from the materials so far. You see the similarity? Hopefully an inescapable line of “Who is…The Spirit?!” buttons are not planned for theater employees.

Head over to AICN to bask in their monolithic high res version of the poster above.

Official Plot Synopsis: Adapted from the legendary comic strip, THE SPIRIT is a classic action-adventure-romance told by genre-twister FRANK MILLER (creator of 300 and SIN CITY). It is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the SPIRIT (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the OCTOPUS (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he’s going to wipe out Spirit’s beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City’s rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront … all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill our masked crusader. Surrounding him at every turn are ELLEN DOLAN (Sarah Paulson), the whip-smart girl-next-door; SILKEN FLOSS (Scarlett Johansson), a punk secretary and frigid vixen; PLASTER OF PARIS (Paz Vega), a murderous French nightclub dancer; LORELEI (Jaime King), a phantom siren; and MORGENSTERN (Stana Katic), a sexy young cop. Then of course, there’s SAND SAREF (Eva Mendes), the jewel thief with dangerous curves. She’s the love of his life turned bad. Will he save her or will she kill him? In the vein of BATMAN BEGINS and SIN CITY, THE SPIRIT takes us on a sinister, gut-wrenching ride with a hero who is born, murdered and born again.

Oh yeah...this suits it. The Spririt title looks similar to 300 and Sin City which will get intrest from people who don't know about this. I am a happy man !

Um, I saw this THIS morning in the New York Times on the back of the Weekend Movies section. It was sorta big, sorta small but was awesome. If you get the paper, check it out

I'm rabidly awaiting that trailer tomorrow, this poster just increases the impatiences.

You're getting a slight "Darkman" vibe? Are you also getting a slight "The Shadow" vibe? Or maybe a "Philip Marlowe" vibe? Or maybe a vibe for anything that contains a Man, a Fedora, and a Trench Coat?
  • McFly
It's so painfully obvious that the majority of the fanboys have never even laid an eye on WILL EISNER'S THE SPIRIT comics. This poster is NOTHING like the SPIRIT.

It's too bad that so many have yet to experience the comics; because if they did, there would be such an uproar of protest how Frank Miller is mucking this up.
  • Captain Awesome
    OBVIOUSLY, YOU FANBOYS!

    @ SalD

Oooh, good one. And no, just Darkman.
  • I can just see the tag line...

" From the makers of SIN CITY......"

Poster is just ok. Kinda reminds me of a 1st year graphic design project.

I hope the whole film isnt at night time.. I hate that.

needs more character/art - less big words. I think that it's probably a good choice to use the similar red lettering, but c'mon, if Frank Miller is the man on this one, this thing should feature some "sick" Frank Miller art.
  • fanboy d
that'd totally go on my bedroom wall. iconic looking poster and it's a good sign that the marketing team is adopting the tagline/title as part of the scenery schtick eisner was known for

I have to agree with McFly,
I also grew up reading the comic book "The Spirit" and had this followed the comic book it would be a hit.
I doubt it will follow the comic book much if any other than the title so it will be a flop in my opinion. Too bad. :(

By the way..."IRON MAN" will prove to be the next BIG HIT once it comes out.
If Lions Gate wants a head up on what would be the next big COMIC BOOK to bring to the big screen that guaranteed to be a solid hit here it is for them and all readers to check out...Its; "DEAD MAN" and he's a ghost, formerly a circus trapeze artist named Boston Brand who performed under the name Deadman, a stage persona including a red costume and white corpse makeup. When Brand is murdered during a trapeze performance by a mysterious assailant known only as the Hook, his spirit is given the power to possess any living being by a Hindu goddess named Rama Kushna, in order to search for his murderer and obtain justice. It is established in Green Arrow Vol 4, #4, that Deadman believes Rama is the supreme being of the universe.
Now here is a story screaming to be made and who would be the ideal actor to play him...???
    who else but Nicholas Cage.

    Oh, one more thing.
If Lions Gate wants the next comic book hero to bring to the big screen here he is..."DEAD MAN"
Guaranteed to be a box office hit just as I'm sure "IRONMAN" will be once it hits theatres.

If the movie can capture the essence of the Spirit's recooperative physical prowess (Nobody took an asswhipping like the spirit and bounce back to return the favor) Then we will have a winner. The Spirit's appeal was his Mike Hammer/Everyman cool.
