Jason Segel in the new Muppet Movie

Okay, so far we don’t know much about the new Muppet Movie that Jason Segel and Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller are developing, but Segel’s promises that it will be a call back to the old school Muppet films has us excited. Soller recently revealed a couple new details to the Defamer.

“It’s gonna be an old school Muppet movie like The Great Muppet Caper or Muppets Take Manhattan. Basically the Muppets have to put on a show to save their studio. And in the intervening years, there’s been a Muppet Diaspora, so the main Muppets need to go off with Jason [Segel] and collect other Muppets from all around the world. We’re in the middle of writing it now. We’re on page 50.”

This is interesting because in interviews Segal had been dodging questions on if he would star in the new movie, but Stoller clearly says otherwise.

It could be like the opening of Star Trek the Motion picture, where they re-assemble the old crew "I need you Bones...Badly!"

just got back from 'sarah marshall'. awesomely funny!!!

if the new muppet movie is 1/10th as good or funny it'll be just what j. henson ordered; a shot in the fuzzy arm.

Im pretty sure the "diaspora" was the basis of Muppets Take Manhattan. It could be my imagination, but didn't they do that at the beginning of that movie...having to go around and collect the various Muppets who had taken up various jobs/vocations across america? And why use the word "diaspora"? Isn't that reserved for the scattering of Jews or religious groups? Although the Muppets may be a religion in and of themselves.

Hmmm, this plot seems almost like that of the Blues Brothers...

As far as future movie ideas go, I REALLY hope they return back to the concept that the Muppets live in a Muppet world with Human guests, NOT a Human world with Muppet guests. I always thought that the best Muppet movies/shows were the ones that let us relax completely in the Muppet fantasy. Although movies like 'Muppets Take Manhattan' had good stuff going for it, don't you think it was strange in a distracting way for everything to be human around them. And don't you think it would have been WAY cooler if the movie was set a Muppet World's New York with human guests? Think of the world created in 'Muppets Christmas Carol'!

Also, I really hope they keep the jokes and material appropriate for all ages, as that has been the point of the Muppets from the beginning, something that everyone can enjoy. While it can take more effort to do this well, it would be worth it. However, from their choice in people working on this movie, I suspect that they may try to make more Adult Muppet stuff, which is frankly, weird. Weird in a bad way, not a Gonzo way.
