We have a winner! Columbia Pictures’s 88 Minutes has been voted one of the worst films of all time by movie critics. Metacritic.com, which compiles reviews from movie critics around the world, has ranked the film at #3 on their All-Time lowest review scores - a 2 out of 100. Currently only Pauly Shore’s Bio-Dome and The Singing Forest have garnered worse overall review scores. It should be noted that Matacritic’s database consists of mainly of more recent releases (virtually every film since the beginning of 1999). 88 Minutes stars Al Pacino as Dr. Jack Gramm, an FBI forensic psychiatrist who has… wait for it… 88 minutes to solve his own murder. I know, sounds like one hell of a story…

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film is getting a 14% on the tomatoemeter. It should be noted that Rotten Tomatoes allows a larger amount of non-print critics into their tomatoemeter group of critics, and that Metacritic rates each review on a sliding 100 point scale, while RT uses a thumbs up or thumbs down approach. So if I understnad this correctly, the 2% on Metacritic is the overall average critic rating for the movie, and the 14% on Rotten Tomatoes is the percentage of critics that enjoyed the movie. And to be fair, both of these numbers will likely improve as more and more critics are tallied into both respective rating systems. Or at least the producers of 88 Minutes would hope…
Discuss: Any chance 88 Minutes could be one of those movies which is so bad it’s good?

I watched an advanced copy of this movie last Summer, and I actually liked it. It’s no “Scent Of A Woman”, or “Godfather”, but it’s an entertaining movie.

Peter, I recently watched the movie, and sorry to say, it isn’t one of those “so bad it’s good”. It’s just flat out terrible.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:01 pm
I just love when you watch the previews and you see “The best movie of 2008″ and then in small print it says “Chicago west international post” or some newspaper that 3 people read.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:11 pm
I actually thought this movie looked ok from the previews, not great, but watchable. Also, Bio-Dome was a sweet movie, I dont care what anyone says.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
I guess I might like it considering I thought Bio-Dome was fucking awesome.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
Worst movie of all time?
I haven’t seen it and I can name off hand a fucking treasure trove of shit on film before this has a chance of ever getting on the top 50.

Bio-Dome makes me laugh. It’s not exactly the best comedy i have ever seen but hey it had it’s moments.

@ jason sadler
It was hilarious how fast the newspaper quotes shot up and then off of the screen to hide that they were from some random newspaper. They probably only said they liked it because they knew they would be the only ones saying it and hence have a chance of getting their name part of the TV spot to impress the 3 people you so astutely mentioned read their paper.

Its already up to 5% and 6th place. I doubt it will stay at the bottom for much longer. I guess everything has to be a masterpiece now in order to get a good review from Critics. When movies score low I usually end up loving them, so when a movie scores terribly with critics I make a point to go and see it.
April 17th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
I say it last week, it’s bad, it’s really bad, but far, far away from being one of the worst of all time. Either the critic has only seen other 10 movies (all of Pacino’s best) either he’s an idiot.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
I didn’t think it’s worthy of 3rd worst film ever, thats a bit of a stretch. Yes it was a bit silly and the thriller genre has been done to death. 10,000 B.C. or Jumper were both a lot worse even for so called blockbusters they were just awful. Bio-Dome I even call into question being on that list. Those straight to DVD National Lampoon movies are unwatchable. At least you can watch Bio-Dome just to make fun of Shore and Baldwin. There are at least a few gags that worth laughing at. I may have been in middle school when I saw it, but when they get into the nitrous oxide I couldn’t stop laughing. Son In Law and Jury Duty were bad movies.
April 17th, 2008 at 2:46 pm
I also though Biodome was awesome, just so stupid and random funny (Mom, Let me out! or atleast slide another pancake under the door!). I hired that movie enough to buy it 5 time over. There are much worse movies out there (a few of them in Pauly shores stable…Jury duty? ugh)
April 17th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
… wait for it… Bio-Dome is better than hundreds of other movies I can name.
Atleast I laughed and was entertained… get real… it’s not meant to be Oscar material. Who’s voting on this crap? I’ll watch Bio-Dome again before I sit through “The Pathfinder”… or “Little Man”… please.
April 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
Plan 9 from outer space is the worst movie ever but I love Ed Wood
Prom Night is pretty close too
Bio Dome is hilarious
April 17th, 2008 at 3:35 pm
Why isn’t Gigli on that list? Pacino was in that as well…
April 17th, 2008 at 3:51 pm
It’s easy to make a bad movie, but it’s actually pretty hard to make a truly offensively horrible movie that hurts you so much that you are driven into fits of anger and depression upon just seeing the dvd in Barnes & Noble years after seeing it.
I just don’t think 88 Minutes has it in it to be that type of truly awful movie.
What I don’t understand is why is Al Pacino (or DeNiro for that matter) making a forgettable piece of junk for a quick paycheck news? Just look at all of his uninspired choices in the last 15 years (though I’ll admit there are a few exceptions). Everyone knows that those two guys were in legendary movies when they were younger and have the ability to put something good together now, but have just been making cash grabs and having fun being whores for a long time now.
What would be really interesting is if someone like Daniel Day-Lewis came out with a movie like this or Hide & Seek, Two for the Money, or Showtime, etc. Now THAT would be newsworthy!
April 17th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
I really really disliked this movie.
It was cookie cutter and not very suspenseful. Pacino is a great actor, but the plot and the writing didn’t bring out anything special in him.
I gave it a 3/10 on IMDB. That’s about all I could muster.
No chance that it’s so bad it’s good. No chance at all.
April 17th, 2008 at 4:19 pm
I was just about to go on a rant in defense of Bio-dome, but I was beat to the punch. So I’ll sum it up with this: That movie ROCKED… HARD.
April 17th, 2008 at 5:12 pm
Hey, I was a child of the late-80s and early-90s, so I get the love for Paulie Shore, but christ… his movies were god-awful. There just isn’t denying that.
As for 88 Minutes, it really is offensively bad. I honestly cannot understand how anyone read that script and thought it would be interesting. It’s one of those movies, much like Meet the Spartans, that depresses you, because it gets made into a big-time Hollywood movie, when we know we could write our own script a million times better.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
its up to an 8 now…
April 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
I really don’t get all the hate on this flick. Ok, maybe I do as most reviewers are pretty “ivory tower.” My review will be popping up later and I actually am giving it 3.5/5.
Sure, it was pretty absurd, but it actually had my attention and I found the experience entertaining. I think the total exceeded the sum of the parts and Al Pacino is always great to watch on screen.
Peter, I’m curious what YOU thought of it?

Benjamin Mackenzie? Helloooo. Ryan Atwood anyone? No!? No OC fans eh? well….
April 18th, 2008 at 7:54 am
I didn’t think this movie was bad at all. It is better than a lot of films released these days.
April 19th, 2008 at 7:05 am
I turned off my advance copy half way through, bad acting bad story booooring, could give a rats ass if they all died.
April 19th, 2008 at 7:46 am
That’s quite a lot of ass.
