I think they have to market Iron Man this way. Most of the potential audience had no idea who Iron Man was until a few months ago. Where a comic adaptation is concerned, that's a big difference from something with the universal character recognition of Batman or Spiderman....or even The Hulk. Ask yourself this question - Did my girlfriend know who Iron Man was 6 months ago? does she now?

Captain:

I also agree with many respects that the marketing for Iron Man is overblown, and that Hulk has been neglected. For instance, driving down Sunset Blvd in Hollywood recently, I saw a number of Iron Man ads, some were huge and took the whole side of a building. I saw no such treatment for the Hulk. I just thought it was a little funny how we complain either way and wanted to point out that we're partly responsible for the spread of Iron Man material since we're (initially, at least) so eager for any tidbits.

I agree about TDK as well. The viral marketing has been brilliant, because it doesn't just show us clips from the movie. I haven't personally seen much in the way of clips and it's kept me on the edge of my seat waiting for it. As an unrelated side note, I can't help but wonder how different the marketing would have been had Ledger not passed away. It seems the focus has been largely on Harvey Dent instead of the Joker, but I guess we'll see in the coming months whether that shifts or not.

Ian,

I agree in some respects. But it also comes down to "how" you market a film to be honest. I love the way the marketing has been handled for TDK, it fits the general feel of the world and the film's theme. It also spills the movie out into the "real" world in some respects and gets people very hungry for it.

The marketing blitz for Iron-Man is your usual...well..."blitz". It's just a borage of tons of trailers, trails of other trailers. And ultimately trailers just showing "too" much of the movie. It bothers me that one of the reviewers who has seen IM said that there's no "secret" or "new" action sequences. That we've seen them all in the trailers at some point.

That's really dissapointing. I know they're afraid of people not giving a shit about the movie. But there's more creative and intelligent ways of marketing your work if you have the money for it.

Iron Man hype is the big lump of cold butter that won't spread properly to the other parts of your summer blockbuster toast.

If only the butter would spread around to the Hulk corners of the toast...

Its not the same Agonoct, somebody discribed a tiny scene of Dark Knight, just that.. with Ironman we have already seen the whole fucking movie lol

Or at least ALL the action sequences, that's just terrible.

What an idiot!

Nobody seams to realize that all this clips are virtually Spoilers, BIG FAT "meh.. I saw this in /Film like a month ago, nothing new" SPOILERS.

Ian is completly right, also the onion got it right. At this point, pretty much they are making a full feature film out of a trailer. I'm kinda tired getting Iron-man vids every five minutes. The same happened with the Batman sequel, hasn't been released yet and people is discussing which scenes are or aren't included... fucking ridiculous, I lost interest after a while.

Damn you JJ Abrams for making viral advertising trendy.

I felt like that after the 5 video clips posted a couple of posts ago. This was actually pretty nice to see. You know movie magic and all.

So we'll complain when there isn't enough marketing (Hulk) and then turn around when there is allegedly too much. Personally, I don't want to oversaturate myself with any Iron Man material so other than the first couple of trailers. I've been avoiding all the other videos. They are obviously continuing with marketing like this because it will still be seen, even in the context of people complaining about it.

Yeah, i am a little over all the marketing to be honest, but i'm still more interested in this than the new Hulk movie, and i'd put that down to marketing for sure.
