Just to give you an update, Guillermo del Toro is not yet officially attached to The Hobbit. Recently the director provided this update on his message board:
“There has been a lot of movement. And for the last few weeks there has been a lot of creative / cast / crew / visual talks and agreements and we have witnessed great progress in areas,” said del Toro. “I have to be patient and wait until the papers are done and my attachment is real. Nevertheless- a LOT of progress in defining the films, their cast and crew. And, may I add, we are all happily in synch about all creative aspects so far and all willing and eager to move forth.”
Guillermo also discussed the possibility of helming a video game adaptation. Since it’s release in August, rumor has it that Hollywood is eyeing a big screen adaptation of BioShock, the popular first-person shooter from 2K Games. The visuals are certainly cinematic enough for a big budget film, and critics have praised the game for it’s story, something not common in the video game field. But would del Toro be interested in making a Bioshock movie?
“I love BIOSHOCK from a design point of view,” says del Toro. “But Unless its a HELLBOY sequel I am not that eager to engage in another action-oriented movie. Even if the other elements are right. BUT… if I found the right pitch on the material, who knows - the BIOSHOCK universe is indeed wonderful.”
Guillermo was almost attached to the Halo film a couple years ago.
“I actually flew to [New Zealand] for HALO,” revealed del Toro. “I had design meetings at WETA, we talked about concepts and parameters etc and came very close to doing it- very close - But it was not meant to be. [Hellboy II] was part of the reason I didnt do it - There’s great movie to be made, read the novels… Check out the added Mythos in HALO3.”
As you probably know, Neill Blomkamp was brought onto the film as director, and the project fell into development hell. I think many gamers would agree, del Toro would make the perfect director for a Bioshock movie. And while Guillermo clearly isn’t interested in future action/adventure films outside of the Hellboy franchise, he seems to be open to hearing a pitch. So Hollywood, let’s make this happen!
Discuss: Which movie would you rather see Guillermo del Toro make: The Hobbit, Halo or BioShock?

Wow that’s a tough call… but in the end I’d have to say The Hobbit.
Is all three an option?
April 13th, 2008 at 3:30 pm
Definitely the Hobbit. Especially with Peter Jackson behind the overall project? And Weta Workshop?
Fuck Bioshock.
April 13th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
The Hobbit > Bioshock > something else > Halo
April 13th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
hellboy 3
April 13th, 2008 at 3:46 pm
Bioshock should not be made into a movie, there is no need, it would add nothing.
Go get your own ideas hollywood.

If a videogame property is to be tackled in terms of Jackson’s involvement. That would have to be Halo, it’s a great, rich, backstory, and a smart design to it’s origin.
Reading Del Toro’s comments on Bioshock. It shows he only likes the “look” of the game, and that’s it. Del Toro is like this though, he’s a kid in a candy store and would love to make many properties into films. Like Otomo’s “Domu” which he said he would love to do, and that was years ago. It’s just outloud thinking from him as usual.
Pretty sure it’s going to end up being The Hobbit for him.

I’m usually against videogame movies, but Del Toro for BioShock?
YES YES YES.
April 13th, 2008 at 4:07 pm
The Hobbit. Then that Frankenstein remake by Universal Studios he mentioned back when the writers strike was underway. One last sequel to Hellboy. Then maybe Bioshock…
April 13th, 2008 at 4:14 pm
I’d love to see his take on Frankenstein. He also spoke about wanting to do Creature of the Black Lagoon.
But I think he decided on Frankenstein :)

I would love to see del Toro make a Bio Shock movie. He is one of the only directors in Hollywood that could pull it off. The Hobbit won’t be as cool as most people are expecting anyways.
April 13th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
BIOSHOCK WOULD BE SWEET!!
April 13th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Halo… Just because I am a sucker for intense action. As well, Jackson’s ability to create vast, intriguing CG worlds could play well in that space.
The Hobbit is just boring…
Bioshock would be cool as well, though, but doesn’t yet have the same mass appeal of Halo.

Blomkamp is the right man for the Halo movie, but I’m not sure about del Toro for the Bioshock movie. It doesn’t really seem his style. Hobbit > Bioshock > Canterbury Tales: The Wife of Bath > Halo
April 13th, 2008 at 4:37 pm
The Hobbit is all that matters.
April 13th, 2008 at 4:45 pm
Bioshock was meh. The look and design was great but I’d rather him focus on some other more creative ideas.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:03 pm
Fuck that overrated Starship Troopers! I loved Bioshock, and it should be made, but we’ve been waiting a while for The Hobbit. I’d have to go with that.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
I want del Toro for Evangelion! Or an anime live action - a PROPER one - like G.I.T.S
April 13th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
BIOSHOCK = great cinematic story & visuals. Period.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
Hobbit > Hellboy III > Bioshock + Frankenstein > Halo
April 13th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
Harry Potter
April 13th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
bioshock forsure that game was ridiculous i would love to see it done as a movie and by someone with talent. del toro would rock this movie.
April 13th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Del Toro should do you sister!
HOW’S THAT SLASHFILM DOT COM?!?!
April 13th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
The Hobbit, mainly because of those rumors about Sam Raimi possibly directing the hobbit instead. His movies are shit and it would be awful to see the hobbit ruined by him.
April 13th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
halo or hellboy3
world doesnt need a bioshock nor hobbit movie.
April 14th, 2008 at 12:48 am
HOBBIT!!!!!!!!! please hurry up and star making this movie! Jeezus!
April 14th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Why does this guy blow his load on the Hellboy series. He obsessed. Toro, let it go. Its Effing Hellboy for eff sake…
Move on to a different movie..a better movie…if he did Halo, Bioshock and The Hobbit he’d be amazing. instead he thinks about new shit for another Hellobuy movie that no one cares about.
April 14th, 2008 at 11:45 am
As far as which film I would rather see Del Toro make I think it would have to be Bioshock since I think he’d do amazing things with it.
Now if it was just a matter of which of the three movies I would rather see made period it would be HALO if it was a “fall of reach” movie.
April 14th, 2008 at 11:47 am
I have to go with Halo… of course the Flood could end up being too creepy for the general public. Nasty parasitic organisms have not done well since Aliens. As for Bioshock, a prequel might make a better movie. Hopefully, that is what the next game will be.
April 14th, 2008 at 12:50 pm
do both of them
April 14th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Del Toro for BioShock
April 15th, 2008 at 6:25 am
Uwe Bowl should do Bioshock! … Huh? Anyone?… anyone?
April 15th, 2008 at 9:13 am
If it’s really true that Peter Jackson does not WANT to do The Hobbit the del Toro is as good a foil as any.
April 15th, 2008 at 10:19 am
I hate devianretard kids, if you don’t want people using your art then don’t put it up all over the Internet. If you want people to use your art but would still like credit for it then learn to watermark!
don’t come in here and get all pissy about seeing your shit being used, jerk.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Oh, my bad… didn’t realize that you were just a troll.
April 15th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
If he doesn’t get off his ass and make “At the Mountains of Madness”, like he’s been promising for the past ten years, I’m gonna lose about 50 sanity points.

HALO! The mysterious story in the original HALO game (and to a lesser extent, the sequels) is what made the game so incredibly addicting.
Bungie presented an original story that was both thought provoking and horrific in a James Cameron/Aliens sort of way. The film would, however, need to focus upon the relationship of MasterChief and his AI console.
The Fall of Reach would be a great starting point — or it could serve as either a starting point for a prequel series to a successful trilogy of HALO films that are more accurately based upon the games. It could also be alluded to through flashbacks in the first HALO film.
HALO has a story that NEEDS to be seen on the big screen. Unfortunately, the budget would need to achieve blockbuster status in order to display a proper adaptation (especially for the FX of the Flood and Covenant creatures). I’m not sold on Del Toro as yet having that sort of clout in Hollywood. Don’t get me wrong, I am a big Del Toro fan. Yet I am not certain that he would be completely trusted with a $180M budget (even if a studio is convinced that the film would potentially rake in $350).
Whoever they get to make the film — they need to get it just right. We don’t want another campy CGI film based upon a video game. Remember DOOM?

I know it may be hard to read, but try it some time.
