In a remarkable turn-of-events, the result of the presidential election comes down to one man’s vote. Swing Vote stars Kevin Costner as Bud Johnson, a working-class single father who has the ultimate decision to elect the next President of the United States. Disney chairman Dick Cook called Swing Vote, “a timely and heartfelt story that is sure to touch and entertain moviegoers in the same way that some of the classic films by Frank Capra have done in the past.” Yeah, a little bit skeptical over here. Frank Capra? really? Joshua Michael Stern, the writer of the 2007 direct-to-dvd Wesley Snipes action film The Contractor, helmed this project based on a script he also wrote with Jason Richman, writer of the very forgettable 2002 action comedy Bad Company starring Anthony Hopkins and Chris Rock.
The cast also includes Paula Patton, Kelsey Grammer, Dennis Hopper, Nathan Lane, Stanley Tucci, George Lopez, Judge Reinhold, Mare Winningham, Richard Petty and Willie Nelson and introducing Madeline Carroll. Hopper and Grammer play the Democratic candidate and Republican incumbent, while Lane and Tucci will play their respective campaign managers. Lopez is the local TV station manager of the town which is transformed the political world stage.
Touchtone Pictures will release Swing Vote on August 1st 2008, up against The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, He’s Just Not That Into You, The Rocker, and the New York and Los Angeles release of Choke.

I don’t even have to look into my crystal ball to know that will get killed it’s first weekend. A waste of that cast as well. Well, Costner and Petty can stay, but let’s make a fun movie with the rest of those guys.
Second, Dennis Hopper? Way to Creepy to be President. Love the guy to death, but he gives off the hebbie gebbies.

I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. I’m excited to see what this will end up being.

There was this short on atomfilms or ifilm (before they became a viral site) about this guy being chased by two groups. In the end, the group that successfully captured him forced him to cast his swing vote for their party. I seem to think it was in French perhaps.
I’ll see if I can find it.

Bad Company is in my top five worst films ever, right behind Nic Cage’s Ghost Rider and The Wicker Man.

Costner’s movies haven’t been inspiring for a long time.
He’s not a great actor, but he got lucky with a few
earlier films and the fact he used to be a lady’s man.
His fan base (older women) still swoon over him, even
though he’s proved himself less then honorable with
his actions over the years. I don’t think this movie
will be that fantastic, although there are good actors
in this film. After listening to the nightly debates and
pot shots candidates are taking at each other, a
movie on the same subject doesn’t appeal to me.

People are so sick of politics already, they’re going to run away from this movie when it’s released.

I have loved all of his movies and can’t wait until 8/1 when this movie comes to our local theater. Barbara Nemec

Kevin Costner is a one mode actor. No emotional range to the man. Politics is upsetting in general with the debates going on between real presidental candidates. It’s in the newspapers, TV and spread across the Internet. What I don’t want to do is spend money to watch politics in the theater.

Great casting of principals with some nice surprise background actors. I think it will be well recieved in this election year as a great escape from the realities of this year.

Sorry Rob, but I disagree. No one will want to see more politicing on the big screen when we’re drowning in political war fare in real life. This is bad timing for this film. Our nation is pretty fed up with it’s current President and dying economy and now we’re enduring the electorial process to elect a new President which is already taking it’s toll on Americans. I can’t see people flocking to the theatre and paying for more political nonsense.
