I’m sure Rose can carry a movie. In this job, nobody can never be sure of what will work or not. Of course the cast is very important for a movie but sometimes there can be good surprise. Cloverfield worked very well and the actors were unknown. Of course, there was JJ Abrahms but Robert is also known. There was a big buzz online but with a $ 100 000 they will do a lot of things to promote it. People were skeptical about Daniel Craig to portray James Bond but it worked well (at least in France but I’m sure that’s not the only country). When James Cameron worked for Titanic some people thought he was totally crazy… I don’t know how you can judge something you still didn’t even see. We’ll see.

Robert Rodriguez has been known to make movies on the cheap. If Barbarella is modestly budgetted, which any sensible financer demand it be, then it should recoup. I don’t expect it to be a blockbuster but a sci-fi flick with some sex tossed in should surely have a ready market, right?

Yeah, I don’t equate quality with box office at all. But when a filmmaker/studio is setting up a $100 million sci-fi blockbuster, you can’t ignore the obvious. In order for this movie to be a success, McGowan will have to unleash some appeal we haven’t seen before now. She’ll need to pull a Will Smith in Independence Day.

And if RR’s Barbarella remake flops, I can already see it going down with Waterworld in Flop Hell Infamy. That would not be good for RR’s career, one I’ve followed with great interest since I read his fantastic Rebel Without a Crew waaay back when. Stakes are high with this one.

Can RM carry a film…. Hmm, yeh. Hard to say. The only film I ever really liked with her in it was ” The Doom Generation”
I didn’t care to much for Planet Terror either…I still have a hard time associating RR with having to make Box office successful films. He’s still just a step or two above Kevin Smith to me. I don’t care if there films are hugely successful..If I like it, its all that matters. I really hate that films are measured by box office receipts..
So yah, Odds are, it won’t do much better than Grindhouse did. The core geeks will go to see it, a few perverts and maybe some hardcore Duran Duran fans…and then it will disappear and go on to be a cult classic dvd rental. As it should.

It’s not a matter of effing up the original: can Barbarella can be a creative/boxoff success with McGowan in the lead? I’d like to think that RR will deliver the soft-core goods here, and I can imagine what his vision for it looks like, but after Planet Terror he’s overblown his mark a few times now.

This will be the most difficult movie for RR to pull off, more so than Sin City (my favorite film of his, followed by oldies like Desperado and FDTD), in terms of attracting an audience. McGowan would presumably be in nearly every scene, which is a big risk for a budget over $100 million. She’s not proven at all.

If the budget was, let’s say, $30-50 million, and carried an R-rating (or even PG-13), then she’d be a better fit. I’d prefer to see that film actually. It would be like RR’s Barbwire (remems that? haha) but, you know, Pamela-free.

Rose did a great job in Planet Terror so I’m confident she can surpass Fonda’s Barbarella. Plus from the sound of things this could be the biggest budget Robert has had. Seeing what he can produce with a fraction of these huge budget movies, I think this will be amazing. Can anyone confirm a rumor that Rosario Dawson is playing an amazon woman? I’d love it if they came out with more casting news.

I’m all for this film being made. If done right visually, it could be a lot of fun. It’s in the right hands….and, given Rose, I wish those damn hands were mine.

i think she’ll connect the same way uma did with kill bill. especially under the eye of rr. this will be succesful, not insanely big, but definately big.

How can you fuck up an already bad movie? With that on the plate, RRodriguez can only improve. Barbarella is epically stupid in every way,shape and form. I hope RR kicks up the soft core porn element a notch or two… and turns a campy cocktease into a bukkake-ball-pounding-hand-job.

What would be cool is if Tarantino remade “Beyond the valley of the dolls.” and they released them back to back like grindhouse.
