Just a heads up, this is another non movie related post. I spend 70+ hours a week Blogging the Reel World, during which time I listen to 25+ hours of The Howard Stern Show on Siruis Satellite Radio. Like millions of others, it helps me get through the daily grind. I turned on the show this afternoon, and was shocked to hear a repeat from April 7th.
As it turns out, on today’s show, self-destructive Stern sidekick, comedian and actor Artie Lange (Dirty Work, Beer League) got into a physical confrontation with his personal assistant Teddy, who he claimed was stealing money from him. After the altercation, Lange resigned which Stern accepted. “I Love You,” Lange said to Howard as he left the studio.
Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate said that they managed to talk Artie down in the green room but the he was afraid while he was talking to him. Speculating about if Lange could return to the show, they might be putting future guests in jeopardy. The show usually replays throughout the day on channel Howard 100, but Stern himself decided to pull the replay from the rotation.
Artie Lange was seen getting onto a plane for show line-producer Jason Kaplan’s bachelor party in Amsterdam. His assistant Teddy, also a friend of Kaplan, was also on the plane, but traveling separately. No one knows the future of Lange on the Stern show.
Artie’s breakdown has turned up on YouTube:
Discuss: Will Artie Lange return to The Howard Stern Show?

April 10th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
I hope not. Artie’s been going farther down this spiral of his and im tired of him turning the show into his own Jery Spinger episode.
Boo-fucking-hoo.
Just like when Jackie left. Howard will truck-on and keep the show going. Artie used to be a funny addition to the show but he’s not the same guy anymore. I got tired of his emo bullshit a long time ago. And he ruins the show when he has these childish sessions. I also like how he tried to blame Howard for it. You don’t go to work and bring your personal shit and fight about it in the COMPANY HALLWAY for everyone to see.
Good riddance Artie.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:47 pm
You know, a couple Playboy issues ago Artie gave an interview, talking about his anger, and his parallel acts that are compared to Belushi. Artie is a great guy, he has a great mind, and adds an extra essence to the Howard show.
I understand that people snap sometimes, and although Artie resigned as well as other problems. I hope that he will come to his senses and work things out. I think Artie needs to get Teddy another job and then get himself a new assistant. I can sell from Artie’s frustration that he is just so threatened and he feels violated and he knows that there is no good way around it, and it just blew up.
Peter, I don’t have Sirius, but keep us updated on this situation dude.
April 10th, 2008 at 7:49 pm
Really agreed… Howard, being the best radio ringleader ever, handled the conflict very well in finally challenging Artie on his bullshit. I only started liking Artie when he came to Sirius, but his repeated absences, sleeping on-air, and fighting (w/ homophobic slurs) have more or less ruined it for me. He appears to be on that Belushi/Farley path of self-destruction and the show doesn’t need that.
Yeah this article is a non-movie related post. But it DID affect Howard’s interview with Juno’s Oscar-nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman.

April 10th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
It was a bit. Just to create some buzz before a week off. Tune in on the 28th and all will be well.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:15 pm
People still quantify Howard Stern as entertainment? Or relevant? Huh.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
Good. He’s an obnoxious and unfunny human being.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:32 pm
In defense of the “this isn’t about movies”, we post television stuff on a somewhat regular basis. Plus, Artie Lange is a comedy film actor and his departure from the show could mean a boost in his film career. I know the reasoning is very loose, but /Film has always been an extension of what I’m interested in, and this story is no different. :P
April 10th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
I hope this is how Artie Dies.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Jojo,
Yes he is. If anything Sterns show on digital radio is tons better than his old free radio show. I didn’t think it would outdo it, but he’s managed it. The guy brings constant laughs to my day.
Artie’s time is done at Howards for me, even if he comes back. I’m going to just get progressively sick of him as time goes on. He’s on that same train Jackie was on. Tired of their shit. The guy needs to get help, but I know he wont. Pretty sure this guy is going to die soon.
April 10th, 2008 at 8:55 pm
artie is the best part of the show. the show is a bore without him.
April 10th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
gegfd,
It’s the same sentiments with others who have come and gone. The show has tons of other people are just as funny. The problem is Artie has passed that time when he was actually “the most” funny dude in that crew.
But as time has shown, he can’t handle it anymore. He’s too fat, too angry, and he’s turning on people who helped him. He should be kissing Howards ass for giving him work. He can go back to making another shitty movie like Beer League to support his gambling and eating habits if he wants.
April 10th, 2008 at 9:16 pm
Once again, Howard’s passive-aggressive behavior causes another Artie blow-up. This was just like the “Bro” incident a while back. Artie takes the bait and then he’s the one who ends up feeling like the asshole in the end. Something was definitely wrong with Artie today and once Howard heard Artie bellow “SHUT UP” to Teddy, he should have backed off immediately and let them settle it on their own. Over the past few weeks, Artie has had to endure high-pitch Mike’s Anti-Artie public service announcements, had a charity refuse his cupcake proceeds due to supposedly homophobic remarks, and being publicly ridiculed for falling asleep on the show. Instead of backing off today, Howard pressed on. Now we all get to suffer. I guess nobody was paying attention to the “favorite Stern Show cast member” survey a few weeks ago. Artie surpassed everybody, including Howard. Also, I don’t believe for one second that Gary felt “afraid” when Artie was going through his tantrum today. Artie’s not a threat to future guests’ safety. Whether Artie comes back or not, the show will never be the same after today.
April 10th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
Loved the audio. lol
April 10th, 2008 at 9:31 pm
I love when people make Artie out to be this caged, abused, animal who has no idea of his surroundings.
The guy is a grown man and brings his issues to the radiowaves all the time. He’s constantly sharing his personal life and issues, his heroin addiction and any other crap thats bugging him. Howard has to fish it out of him because he sits in his corner moping like a little girl. And ruins the show. It’s not until it gets out that things get settled. Yes, everything else is fine to share, but money issues? NOT TO BE SPOKEN ABOUT!
He’ll have a sulk and come back. It’s not like his stand-up is taking off.
April 10th, 2008 at 9:34 pm
4-9-08 artie falls asleep on the show!!!!
4-10-08 artie blows up on teddy!!!
you fucked up , you baby gorilla !!!
the show will be better without the
fat fuck!!!! bring back GEORGE TAKEI!!!!!
April 10th, 2008 at 9:55 pm
Howard provides 25 plus hours of entertainment a week, with or with out Artie. He is the King of All Media
April 10th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
artie lange is the cancer of show,
i hope you fucking learn your lesson
you fat piece of shit!!! your comedy act
sucks and those two horrible weak ass
excuses of movies suck too!!!
IF ARTIE COMES BACK- WE RIOT
i will cancel my service if i hear your
fucking sob story , he is only famous
because of STERN !!!
April 10th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
@ theresa, of all the posters here, i think yer the only one who actually listens to the show. yes artie is responsible for his behavior, BUT anyone who listens knows that howard absolutely goads every single person in that room to freak out, because its great radio for his show. i love howard more than most, but he knows how to push peoples buttons, and he does it quite often so as to create intruiging live radio - thats the point of the fucking show!
i love it, but the show will take a massive dip without artie. it will make more time for sal & richard and they are the downfall of the show. homophobic /erotic pranks are only funny for so long, and their material is absolute shit. hopefully a reconcilliation and some rehab are on the horizon for artie.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Takei would be a great replacement for Artie. That dude kills me everytime he’s on.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:19 pm
Orange douchebag, many of us listen to the show. And you’re missing much if you single out Sal and Richard for homophobic pranks while overlooking Artie’s blatant use of the word “faggot”. The show can go on without Artie, as it did with Jackie.
April 10th, 2008 at 11:28 pm
Artie was the only funny thing on that show. It sucks that he left, but hopefully he’ll find a better outlet for his comedy.
O&A for life.
April 11th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Sorry orange,
You site Richard & Sal for being homophobic and ignore Artie’s? A These guys have the easiest jobs in the world. All they have to do is sit around on their asses for 2-3 hours a day and talk shit to each other or about other people. Artie isn’t doing anything special here. Like I said, I’ve been a longtime Stern fan before his digital move. And Stern “is” the center of attention and he does orchestrate things, but thats what Stern is Stern. And Why I love him.
But to lay blame on him because he somehow made Artie behave like this? Just like when Artie threw something a Sal? Howard was just mediating between the parties to get them to calm the fuck down. But Artie can’t control his anger. And it’s fucking obvious Artie can’t control many things in his life.
I loved the old Artie, this new one sucks. He shouldn’t bite the hands that feed him (no pun intended)
April 11th, 2008 at 3:42 am
The show went on without Jackie because Jackie sucked, plain and simple. Artie is/was an asset to the show. Don’t even try to tell me that you don’t laugh hysterically whenever he sings that Anne Murray song or when he imitates Jeff the Drunk or Blue Iris.
The guy is naturally funny. Unscripted. Jackie never came close.
April 11th, 2008 at 5:00 am
O&A PARTY ROCK
Ron and Fez noon to 3!
April 11th, 2008 at 5:15 am
So glad Artie is gone. I hope really hope it’s for good. He’s funniest bit was falling asleep during the show.
April 11th, 2008 at 5:16 am
I canceled my Howard TV and Sirius subscription last night. The show is going to suck ass now. Artie was the best thing that show ever had (remember the Q ratings?).
I know others will follow my lead. Who the hell just wants to listen to Howard and Robin’s banter for hours on end without Aritie there to mix it up?
April 11th, 2008 at 6:42 am
Artie has been getting more and more unfunny as the months go on. His rants are full of anger and seem to be unprovoked at times. I dont give a rat’s patootie if he’s got ‘problems’ with his assistant, home on the shore or whatever. Sometimes, I turn down the raido when he’s on because he can become so obnoxious…Sorry Artie.
April 11th, 2008 at 7:36 am
I think it’s hypocritical for howard to have pulled the show. It’s a paid service and this shows he’s totally about censorship when it suits him to protect his stock.
April 11th, 2008 at 8:25 am
BeeBee,
From a lawsuit standpoint. I’m pretty sure the people at Sirius are going to sit on the replay for a bit until they know for sure Artie isn’t going to get sued, moreso the station. Especially anything involving a physical altercation. From what I heard they fear that someone like Teddy could easily go for a case.
But that’s to be heard of. Guess we’ll find out when they come back.
April 11th, 2008 at 6:26 pm
I love Howard and have been a fan for over 20 years. I dig Artie on the show but it’s been like watching a slow death. He REALLY needs help but it’s not up to Howard. If he leave the show after this in a couple of years people will be saying Artie who????
Howard made him what he is and he can forget about those $ 20,000 plus gigs… they will soon go away.
Artie has always said he leaves jobs on a bad not and I guess this is just history repeating itself.
So sad…….
April 11th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Satellite radio… where talent goes to die.
Seriously, who the hell pays for radio anyway?
April 12th, 2008 at 6:43 am
If you lunge at a buddy, it can be resolved. If you lunge at someone at the office, you get fired. No one more then me wants Arty back, but legally…I don’t know if it’s possible.
George Takei may be coming in more then once every 3 months
April 12th, 2008 at 11:24 am
I hope that they decide to let Artie back, but I do think there should be conditions for it. Like for one he needs to sign something that states he will not attack physically anyone on the show. Also, he needs to go on a health regiment.
Also, to address another issue, I am gay and it doesn’t bother me one bit that people use the word faggot. So, get over it, yeah?
April 12th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Artie has been nothing but a cancer to the show. It’s becoming the Artie Lange show featuring Howard Stern at this point. All Artie is at this point is using other comic’s material to make people laugh, laughing before and after his own sentences and jokes, with a smoker’s lung wheeeeeeze to boot, and using the F-word for gay people every 2 seconds.
The Jackie chair should always have been a rotating chair of new comedians, not permanent for one guy. I hope Howard and the crew do the right thing and realize violence in any workplace is not tolerated (and by the way, this is the 3rd time Artie has had a questionable confrontation w/a Sirius employee this year, and the 2nd time he used a weapon to fight - real men don’t throw CDs and water bottles before lunging at you).
April 13th, 2008 at 11:41 am
If this was a bit as some people are saying, then I doubt it would be pulled from the replay rotation. You have to make several conspiracy theory type leaps to believe this. However, howard 100 news reporting from Amsterdam said that Teddy and Artie looked at each other with somewhat of an understanding look. Anything is possible I guess in the world of entertainment.
The conflict makes for great radio — but watching Artie detioriate brings me down. I hope the chair gets filled by a harder working, up and coming comic who acts like it means a great deal to them.
I missed the show, but heard it on the youtube clips. What happened after the fight. Did the show end abruptly, skipping the news?
April 13th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
That show will be terrible w/out Artie.
The only reason I got Sirius was FOR ARTIE.
Man, they all drove him crazy there bothering all the time. Robin thinks she is perfect, Shuli is a jerk…….Hein is a goody-goody. Without Artie the show will suck….I will not be able to stand the show w/out Artie.
He IS THE ONLY ONE WHO IS REAL ON THAT SHOW.
April 13th, 2008 at 5:02 pm
I wish Robin would leave. She is getting more and more annoying as time goes on … she acts like she is better than everyone. I think the ‘little people’ comment was real.
April 15th, 2008 at 11:04 am
If you actually believe this was a real occurance then your crazy. I know the break down. Basically Artie needed time off and since he been taking more then his far share of time, and everyone asking questions he decided to plot a good reason to give artie the time off. This was scripted and arite will be back next week for sure with an apology.
April 15th, 2008 at 4:39 pm
WHO CARES.
Howard Sucks!
Listen to O&A
FFFFRRRRRRUUUUUNNNNNNKKKKKIIIIISSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 16th, 2008 at 12:47 am
Oh come on, Artie Lange was a two bit nobody unfunny cokehead who got a big break by getting on the Stern Show. If he goes away (Which by the way I hope he does) He will probably wind up like the rest of the wanna be’s like himself or worse.
The guy obviously has big problems and refuses to do anything about them. I have been a fan of the Stern Show for ages, all the way from the days of D.C to the rise to sirius, Artie was not a choice I would have made for the chair, but im not Stern so I guess He had His reason for hiring the guy.
I think if Stuttering John had been given the Opportunity he would have been a better choice and would have still been with the Show.
Lets face it Artie is no Stuttering John.
April 17th, 2008 at 6:42 am
As right as some of you are about Artie and his habits to say he is no stuttering john is crazy. Stuttering John is only what his name is. If your a Stern fan you know that stuttering john was nothing more than a stooge. His interviews were funny only because he was handed a list of questions to ask in his funny voice. I do agree Artie is kind of the same thing. Most of his success came from Stern. He is not a great stand up comedian. But he does add some good humor to the show. The man needs help and that should be the bottom line.
April 17th, 2008 at 9:58 am
If Howard thought a Lawsuit was about to hit him in the nose I bet he would more cautious on trying to get better ratings. You will see a more subdue Howard for the next several weeks ..Again LAWSUIT is coming
June 7th, 2008 at 12:16 pm
He’s gotta go. His smoker’s wheeze laugh is like ear cancer.
June 7th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
HA! I thought it was just a fat guy wheeze…
How great was Bigfoot this week it is?!
