Paramount has released a new video clip from Iron Man featuring Tony Stark’s first flight in the Mark II armor. I got the see this clip and five or so more minutes of footage at WonderCon in February, but seeing the clip in full 1080p on my MacBook Pro makes me just as excited. And I love Jon Favreau’s Battlestar Galactica-inspired in flight documentary style cinematography. You get to see this towards the end of the clip. Hopefully the in-helmet shots won’t be overused as I enjoy seeing Iron Man in action. Check it out below and tell me what you think in the comments!
Watch the clip in High Definition on Apple.com.
Discuss: What did you think of the new Iron Man clip?

Oh, thank God! When you said “BSG style”, I thought they would use the drunk camera effect…

This looks better than I ever thought it would.

That looked great. I also really like the inside helmet UI sequences. Sort of the point no? Since he is just a regular guy in a tech suit.
Not sure what “Battlestar Galactica-inspired in flight documentary style cinematography” means. I’ve never watched that show. Are you talking about the camera shots outside of the suit while flying?
April 8th, 2008 at 2:35 am
Captain: Yes, I was talking about the shots of him flying outside. They are done in a way that feels like they are being shot from a plane flying around Iron Man picking up the action, almost news or documentary style. Favreau has talked about this in interviews, and I tend to agree that filming the sequences this way gives the whole thing a more real feeling. Like him I feel that a lot of the computer generated shots in films are way too smooth allowing the CG characters to stick out like a sore thumb.

Big BSG fan myself and I completely agree that this is right on the money. A lot of it is based on how the human eye and head move when you’re watching something like that. Absolutely brilliant shots. Throwing in the Air Traffic patterns was a keen insight. If they’re that insightful and put that much thought into keeping it reasonably realistic for the whole film I’ll be amazingly happy.

I love the way he sorta clicked his heel before starting the engines. Looks cute!

I dig it.

What I loved was Downey’s portrayal of Strak, and the nervous giddyness of a first flight. To me, it was believable. Too many other movies have ruined a scene like that, where it is like a newly acquired power comes with the knowledge of how to use it.

Man that was awesome can’t wait for this movie and TDK
April 8th, 2008 at 8:17 am
this looks good.
Somewhat unrelated, but I always liked the first flight portrayed in The Rocketeer.

The Rocketeer - now that was a great flick !!

I’d like it… if it didn’t smell of box office cheese… “sometimes you gotta run before you can walk”… what’s that all about? And the music… one step away from 80’s montage. I really WANT to like it. But I can’t yet. Too often lowest common denominator catering murders otherwise good action movies. I hope this isn’t one of them.

Yeah, Stark’s dialog was a little bit cheesy, but easily leveled out by the zomg cool of the flight itself and JARVIS! Jarvis is awesome.

Awesome.

If getting me a suit like that requires a collage education than I’m going to collage, but what Courses? Damn You Ignorance!!!
April 8th, 2008 at 10:15 am
Looks great, and I want more.
And if possible would you mind buying me a working Iron Man suit? It would be much appreciated and I would repay you in any means you find fit.
April 8th, 2008 at 10:19 am
I want one!
April 8th, 2008 at 10:22 am
Nothing about that video is impressive. Looks like Fantastic Four: Rise of Iron Man to me.
April 8th, 2008 at 10:52 am
Nothing great. That music was terrible.

gocitizen,
You said it. I would love a “new” Rocketeer movie. Not a reboot, just a new film taking off from the last one.
:)

Love it. Cheesy lines and music or not, I’m still going to love it. I can’t nitpick this movie.

That clip was amazing on all but one level. I didn’t mind the dialogue, the camera work was spot on, cgi looked amazing EXCEPT they used the same giddy/surprised sound effect twice, right after each other. So either Downey Jr. really did do the same noises twice or they stuck them in on purpose. either way it annoyed me.
I can tell it’s going to be good when the only problem I find is a small Sfx error.
April 8th, 2008 at 2:28 pm
You find dialogue like that in comics all the time. I liked it.
April 8th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
This is going to be so bad ass. I can’t wait.
April 9th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Presumably the cheesiness of the “Run before you walk” line is the build-up to the flameout and impending crash we’ve seen in the trailers. So it makes it ironic and funny when he crashes because he was being too brainy. Which to me, is suitable super genius humor.
April 9th, 2008 at 12:40 pm
it was deliberately cheesy line, clearly. looked cool to me, i for one am shocked at the lack of backlash to robot jarvis, it’s like people are being open minded or something…
April 9th, 2008 at 10:25 pm
Woooooo! lol so corny
April 10th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
The thing I don’t like is his voice when he’s inside the suit. In the comics, when he’s in the suit, his speech bubbles look different than when he’s outside of it or the mask is up. I was hoping his lines would have some sort of filter of then when heard from outside the suit.
