Uwe Boll

Ladies and Gentleman, we finally have a chance to rid the cinematic world of a cancer. Uwe Boll, the German director behind such horrid video game adaptations as House of the Dead, BloodRayne, Dungeon Siege and Postal, has recently admitted that he would retire from making movies if enough people want him to stop. When FearNet mentioned to Boll a petition online signed by 18,000 people requesting that he cease making films, Boll responded that “18,000 is not enough to convince me.” So how much would be enough?

“One million,” Boll said. “Now we have a new goal.”

Indeed, now we have a goal. All we need is 980,000 more signatures on this petition and we can rid the world of future Boll-directed/produced cinematic atrocities. as my friend Scott Weinberg on Cinematical points out, Tunnel Rats, Far Cry, Zombie Massacre and BloodRayne 3 are already in production. So we might not be able to stop those productions. Be we just might have the ability to prevent a BloodRayne 4 or House of the Dead 3. So sign now!

This is childish. If you don’t like his movies, the best way to petition is to just not see them. It’s that simple.

  5. Gravatar

signed, but i have a feeling he wont honor it if there are one million signatures.

  6. Gravatar

Hey, dont sign to fast. i dont like his films too, but if we make him stop filming, he probably will find another hobby, that could maybe harm us more … and besides, if he wont do films anymore, we wont have anything to laugh/cry/be upset about. and you know - he is insane - if there are a million people voting for this, he will understand it as a million people knowing/appreciate him

I’ve done my good for the world and signed the petition. Can we get this emailed around to other film sites so we’ve got the maximum chance of reaching the goal?

  9. Gravatar

I would rather sign one to ban the meet the spartan date movie epic movie guys from ever touching a camera again

  10. Gravatar

There’s only a little over 19k! Where’s the hate, folks?!

  11. Gravatar

Lets sign a petition to get a group of kindergarteners the money and a crew of obedient slaves to make a movie instead.

  12. Gravatar

i dont understand why im not allowed to write anything negative in the comments section of your website but then you go ahead and endorse this petition…no he’s not a good filmmaker and his movies are terrible but who are you guys to make him stop? if you dont like it so much dont see his movies…if nobody buys tickets he wont be allowed to…stop this nonsense, its childish and lame

  13. Gravatar

It ISN’T Slashfilm who made the petition I believe doobie. I believe they just found it and the interview.

  14. Gravatar

can we get a list going for Bret Ratner?!?!

  15. Gravatar

i never said slashfilm made the petition, i said they endorse it and are encouraging people to sign it

Um, no offense seriously you all. But like some of the people above me have said, this is kind of foolish. I whole heartedly love this site, but this is a little to much lol. I know his movies more then often tend to suck, but we are the people that really keep him in business. If you just dont go see his movies he wont be able make enough revenue and no one would let him make movies. As being fans of movies, you all should know, that it is kind of wrong to do that to the fans that do like his movies. What if someone decided to do that to a director that you loved? That would suck, and I know it is hard to believe but some people actually do like this guy lol. Plus, I think it is kind of selfish to take the man’s job from him lol. But I will agree that his movies are not all that great. Just my two cents…… Anthony

By the same token… I have recently tried to make several posts merely stating that Slash Film (Peter) is deleting posts that Slash Film (he) doesn’t like. Where can I read “the rules” about what to post here so I know what is okay that I say, Peter?

Eric: He really was quite clear. You should read things more carefully before you attempt to correct others or provide a statement of your viewpoint.

this is a mans passion were talking about it here! Why in the world would we want to stop him from being able to to what he loves? Even if his movies are bad, just imagine how good his biopic movie will be i.e Ed Wood. Just dont see the movies. Without bad movies in hollywood, how will we ever proctor what is good and bad? Watch interviews with him, he seems like a truly nice guy, I dont think its anyones place to repress to someone in this, or essentially any manner. Everyone here loves something, any the cynics do, this is where sympathy is born from, innately. Why cant we sympathize with him? What if peter was no longer allowed to have slashfilm.com, because millions of people sent hate mail to him, and started a petition online. I dont understand, why people arent able to put themselves in his shoes. What if people had never told us we couldnt do something? This concept maybe a little farfecthed to say, alot of art which is hated in a contemporary situation, is acclaimed in the future. This is an odd concept to apply with film, because relatively it has been around for so few years. But there are examples Ed Wood, Andy Worhal (sp?), THE WHOLE FRENCH NEW WAVE CINEMA, those movies are totally shit. But I like them, maybe thats because the subject matter is appealing to me being a young adult. I mean its bad to say that the new wave is shit, I know, because they were obviously functioning on a totally different level than Boll. They had things they wanted to talk about, or images the wanted to share. I dont know…I need to get back to my homework. I just urge people not to sign this petition.

  23. Gravatar

I signed, but I bet he won’t stop even if 1 million is reached. He’ll probably say he was just joking and go on making crappy movies.

  24. Gravatar

While we’re at it. Can we create petitions to stop Kevin Smith and Diablo Cody from creating any furthur work?

    That’s right…I said it.

  25. Gravatar

Sorry Peter, but whenever i post something disagreeing with Hunter it gets deleted. you should probably look into that.

  26. Gravatar

That’s actually kinda sad. If you don’t want them don’t watch them. Don’t ever let anyone tell you about yourself unless it inflicts on the lives of others. Somehow I doubt he’s holding a gun to your head to watch his movies.

I lost faith in you Uwe. Sucky or not, I respect that you physically beat the crap out of critics.

  27. Gravatar

wow. this is gonna be so easy.

  28. Gravatar

tin man: did you attack him or did you intelligently express a differing opinion? (ie “your wrong and everyone hates you” or “I think you’re wrong and here’s why…”)

  29. Gravatar

THANK GOD SOMEONE ENDED HIS REIGN OF TERROR, NOW FOR THE MILLIONS OF OTHERS!!!!

  30. Gravatar

i intelligently told him he was wrong and why i disagree with him and that he needs to learn how to write better because he comes off like an annoying douchebag.

  31. Gravatar

agree that its childish and not seeing his movies is more effective but I signed it anyway

we should just kill the parody movie guys

atleast Boll’s movies have some funny moments though I would never fund any of them ever

  32. Gravatar

The problem with Uwe Boll is that he takes licenses that have potential and the churns out crap movies. After the success of the first Resident Evil the studio was able to rake in the money with sequels because it was half way decent and had a built in audience. With Uwe Boll films he basically alienates the built in audience that is a fan of the games simply because of his reputation for making crap.

  33. Gravatar

Doobie: Boll keeps making films because he and his investors can write off financial failures under German tax law. The worse his films do, the better for him. Not buying tickets to his movies and not buying the DVDs would therefore not work at stopping him from making new films.

  34. Gravatar

Tubman: no need for name calling… I’ll look into it

  35. Gravatar

    Michael,

That German Tax law loophole was done away with some time ago. People can only use that excuse for so long. He’s used other investing groups to fund his films.

As much as I dislike him and his films. There’s no need to sign a stupid online website to have the guy stop making his crap. Theres tons of creators from various mediums who continue to produce utter shit. I don’t see you guys throwing up petitions for those people? That’s the point of giving people creative freedom. It lets you compare and see what you like and what you don’t. I don’t need a group on the internet telling me what sucks. I know my personal tastes.

I’d sooner sign a petition to stop the guys who make those “step” films than I would Boll. You can’t solve everything by signing it away.

  36. Gravatar

  41. Gravatar

    @thats (apr 6 11:56am)

Boll’s movies have considered BOMBED at the box office, so not going to the movies is clearly not enough to get him to stop. If he’s giving us an out, we have to take it!

Boll gave us an out before, by challenging people to knock him out in a boxing match… unfortunately, nobody beat him, so he went and made Postal. He must be stopped by all means!!!

  42. Gravatar

I am not going to sign, I find his movies some of the most ridiculous I have ever seen, and I have seen all of them in theaters, video games dont make good movies in general I mean look at Doom and well every Video game movie, Mario brothers anyone. Any who if he wants to make movies let him, its his right, besides you don’t like it don’t see it.

  43. Gravatar

signed. Sorry Boll, you lost today kid. But that doesn’t mean you have to like it.

  44. Gravatar

    SIGNED. Quit now.

  45. Gravatar

What’s so bad about his movies?
They are so terrible they’re actually somewhat entertaining.
Honestly, the worst time at least I, could have watching a movie is if it’s neither good nor terrible enough to be interesting in a bad kind of way.

I’d watch a Boll movie over your very average or pretty bad but not terrible releases like The Bucket list, or Hostel that constantly flood our screens any day.

  46. Gravatar

If only there were a petition I could sign to stop d-bags from posting articles online. Seriously, he likes directing, let him direct. There has never been a video-game movie that has been any good. Well, maybe 1. Also, a lot of German movies are terrible. This poor guy’s just a product of his upbringing, lets not ruin his career. I mean, Oliver Stone is still allowed to make movies, right?

  47. Gravatar

As much as I don’t appreciate Boll’s movies, signing a petition doesn’t guarantee him stopping — he could break his word. Furthermore, it looks like it’s just a grab for attention… which you’d be giving to him by signing a petition about him.

  48. Gravatar

Cmon, those were really bad scripts to begin with. Not everybody can be a Spielberg.

Now if this was a Michael Bay petition, I’d be going door to door to collect signatures.

  49. Gravatar

This guy earns top-dollar by making sub-par movies that only because they exploit well established intellectual properties and a lot of people, including myself, have a problem with that.

Sure we can all not choose not to watch his movies. However, you can’t solve every problem by just being passive. That’s like saying if you have a problem with child pornagraphy, just don’t watch it and it will go away. For the people who are fed up enough to do something about it, simply deciding to not watch his movies will not do be sufficient, there are still those other millions of people who just go and see movies not knowing who the directors are or if the movie will be entertaining or not. They might think, “hey this trailer looks pretty neat, maybe the movie is just as good” or “I’ve played that video game and it was great, that must mean the movie is good”.

A lot of people don’t know what to fully expect and they shouldn’t have to as long as they feel entertained by the end of the movie. The problem is, that’s not what is happening here.

    1. Man consistently over-charges for a poor quality service (i.e. crappy movies) 2. People get really fed up
    3. Man loses his ability to provide such a service
    4. Justice is served and the people rejoice.

  50. Gravatar

Im just kind of curious though, this guy has to get good right? He has to make at least one good movie, doesnt he? After all that time spent on making films, he would finally have to make one. arent you curious what that film would be? If a million is reached we’ll never find out.

  51. Gravatar

Ehhhh not signing this is lame……………….

  52. Gravatar

If you sign this online petition and if we reach our goal of 500,000 signatures. We will do away with world hunger forever!!

Our next online petition will tackle the ever rising popularity of online petitions. Stay tuned internet!

  53. Gravatar

i’m gonna go ahead and stick up for postal, the movie was actually alright. it could have had alot more chaotic things going on though.

still i agree all his movies are terrible, and yes the guys making all these spoof movies, all the new national lampoon movies, all the college drunk/drug humor movies should stop and die. (i’ll also throw in the low budget ripoff movies such as omega man, 10 million bc, war of the worlds 2: the next wave, etc)

  54. Gravatar

listen, if we don’t have guys like uwe, we’d have nothing to measure quality. there can’t be good movies without bad ones. the world needs uwe boll.

    Guys, Seriously.

If you stop him from making movies, who will inspire the next Ed Wood (Ed Wood 2: Bloodrayne!) or MST3k show?

This guy is just making movies. He’s not trying to solve world problems. He’s doing something he likely loves. Why is anybody asking him to stop? Put yourself in his shoes…

Hollywood is pretty damned frugal. If he’s making money, than there’s a reason to keep him making movies. When he stops making money, then he’ll go away. But do NOT make him go away until then… Do you hear me?!?

    PLEASE DON’T STOP, Mr. BOLL!

  60. Gravatar

While I want to say “Dude no more GTFO”, for him to do this and put his career’s fate in the hands of the internet - he just gained a lot of respect from me.

  61. Gravatar

    @Ryan M,

Uwe is not good at what he does IMO. Just cause you love something doesn’t mean you’re supposed to do it. Someone has to say ‘Stop, you’re awful at what you do no matter how much you love it, please let someone better do this instead and find something else that you love and are good at’.

I’m tired of seeing good game concepts being ruined when filmed by someone like Mr. Boll, the games and the original ideas and creators do not deserve it!

Of course we can’t have everything in life, but that’s why people voice their opinion and try to change things into what they feel and believe is for the better. That’s what’s happening here.

Getting 1M people to sign sends a very strong message about what people think about his movies.

You know? I used to think this guy was just an idiot, and I still may be right, but everything he does seems to be a carefully considered PR move on behalf of self-promotion. He seems to be aware that his movies suck and he almost seems to thrive off the bad publicity.

He’s like an internet-troll with a camera, a script and ridiculous budgets.

  70. Gravatar

i dont undertstand why you all take this so personally! oh my god! uwe boll is making another movie! this offends me so much i feel the need to quash his dream because my opinion is so much stronger than his…and for all of you who keep saying things like “why sign this petition? its lame…now if there was a michael bay petition…” you guys need to stop this madness… if you dig the franchise, the games and all that, it doesnt automatically mean you should see the movie…just stop going…just stop going…let him do his thing, it has NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING to do with you…

  71. Gravatar

    “A cancer”. Wow.
I really can’t grasp the immaturity of this thread one iota.
There’s a lot of replies proclaiming simply “signed” as if this were something to brag about.
Do I personally like Uwe Boll’s films? No.
I do, however, reckon that writing and directing a series of films, quality regardless, is far more of an achievement, a bragging right, than putting a name to a ridiculous, and ultimately meaningless, petition.
If you don’t want to see Mr. Boll’s films do what I do. Simply steer clear.
I have no interest in seeing his films yet that doesn’t mean he should have his livelihood, something he blatantly enjoys doing, taken away from him.

  75. Gravatar

I’d rather watch another Uwe Boll movie than most of the stuff that wins an Oscar each year. Some people need to learn to relax and not take themselves so seriously.

  76. Gravatar

I’m sure you have a talent, Mr Boll, but please just accept the fact that directing films isn’t your speciality…

  77. Gravatar

The only talent this dope has is in cracking the skulls of people who don’t like his films.

  78. Gravatar

  80. Gravatar

    Signed…looks like it’s up to about 54K.

  81. Gravatar

I seriously do not understand those people who say they dislike him as well as his films….How many have even met him? Uwe Boll may not be the best director in the world, but he is not the worst.

He has the desire, intelligence and fortitude to find a project, finance it totally by raising the money, then, produce, market and distribute. He does this on his own, without major studio assistance. That in itself is remarkable.

He is well liked by his crews, each project gives employment to 120 -200 Union members, to whom he pays a decent salary.

Uwe is a pleasant man work with, not like some of the Award winning directors and producers with whom I have worked. We actually have fun on his projects.

I do understand that the editors of these internet bitchfests are bitter little wannabes and they haven’t the ability, intelligence or guts to go out and try to make a film on their own so they find a source on which to focus their animosity, and the internet public buys into this.

If you don’t like the films Uwe makes then don’t go see them…but on the other hand keep up your prattle, because it does bring people into the theaters.

Uwe boll makes shit. We are not Forcing him to retire; he offered. So what happens when you open your big fat mouth with an offer like that? You get just what you asked for, 1 million sigs for your shitty career to be put on the shelf, nay, im the garbage!

Every movie this man has ever made was for money. He doesnt listen to the fans at all. He may as well go join The Asylum gang.

  83. Gravatar

Well this is certainly a worthwhile venture. If you’re going to sign a petition, why not sign one that matters? This particular one is irrelevant because:

    - Uwe Boll will not stop making movies because y’all signed this one. It’s probably just another play for attention.

    - If Uwe Stops making movies, someone else will step up to fill his place.

However, if there is a petition to get those Epic Movie/Meet the Spartan guys to stop making movies, I’ll sign it with all 16 of my secret identities. Twice.

  91. Gravatar

Every that says he’s not hurting us personally is wrong. He’s taking franchises that we have nurtured and loved and destroying them I don’t hate every production he’s done just the ones where it’s about a game I care about. It would be better off if they weren’t made rather then if they were dragged into STV hell.

  92. Gravatar

    What the hell?
    Are you people high?
His movies aren’t great, but they’re far from the child pornography that someone saw fit to compare them to. (I think that probably counts as a Godwins Law varient)

You have no right to insist that an artist - even one as bad as Boll, stop creating their art. What will a million signatures prove?

At best, that there are a million douches on the internet (congratulations on that by the way; anyone with anything approaching common sense could have told you that).
At worst, it’s that a few folks who think that they have the right to dictate what other people who have done nothing to them beyond making a bunch of movies that they didn’t like, and likely didn’t see anyway, have collective access to amillion email accounts; Hell, I could sign up with a million here myself if I wanted to!

Are you going to insist that the folks at Troma stop making movies? Last I checked, they were pretty damn awful too, only they didn’t use some concept that a community held up as an undeserving sacred cow; ruined good concepts? Not a chance; good concepts are a dime aa dozen in the movie industry (and they usually result in bad films anyway; check out your straight to DVD section for where most of these concepts end up in the rare instance that they actually make it to production)

The trick isn’t making a good movie; it’s getting one made at all, and Boll can actually do it better than almost anyone who tries. Once you’re actually making a movie, then you can start worrying about whether it’s good or nor. Up until that point, the question is “Will this ever even get made?”, because if you ask yourself about whether it will be good, you’re wasting time, because it’s impossible to know. Might it be good? The answer is always; yes it might.

Could everyone here who signed the petition, please quit their jobs if the work that they do isn’t of extraordinary quality please?
It’s only fair that it should run both ways.

  93. Gravatar

    Don’t sign this. Fucking pussies.

  94. Gravatar

Are people going to demand that games companies that have made movie tie in products also stop making games? “Ruining” franchises isn’t something that the games industry is free of guilt from.

However bad Boll’s movies are, they’re better than Lost; the computer game, which is an abomination no matter how much of a fan of the show you may or may not be!

  95. Gravatar

You gotta believe I signed this, talk about sucky movies, it’s a good job uwe boll never teamed up with actor bela lugosi, as he sucked too!

Oh, can Klaus Kinski’s movies be unmade, I know he’s dead, but can we burn the negatives?

  96. Gravatar

It’s nice to see what will happen. Nobody should say words like “I will do something if enough people will ask” without consequences. So I *signed*.

  97. Gravatar

I´ve signed. But why, some of you ask me. Well becouse Uwe Boll isn´t just making bad movies, he has made it to his mission to make bad movies based on video games. Video games, some with good stories or ideas, that he completly re-writes with no respect for the original game and their creators. If he just wrote his own movies instead of ripping the souls out of video game stories, then I wouldnt have signed the petition.

I don´t think Uwe will stop making movies. I signed becouse I wanted to make a statement. And yes, I´ve stoped paying to look at his movies (yes i still watch them, but only becouse I havent given my hopes up)

  98. Gravatar

    Signed. Up to almost 72K.

There have been some passionate arguments made here about “not paying to see the movie” and “just let the guy do what he loves”. In rebuttal: Nobody I know and nobody I have contact with over the internet (this number reaches into the hundreds) has ever payed to see a Uwe Boll movie. According to them, none of the people they have contact with have ever payed. This means that in one small corner of the internet there are at least 1000 people that have never payed to see a Uwe Boll movie. From the way his movies have performed at the box-office, this number is indicative of a larger trend - he has never made a movie that has made a profit. There should be no way he should be capable of raising the money to purchase rights to a property, nor should there be a way for him to raise the money to produce a film. Yet he manages it, even though it’s been proven to be a rather poor decision for anyone ever involved.

As to just leaving the man alone… The positive economic impact of the employment of the film crews is offset by the massive waste of capital that is a Uwe Boll movie. Sure, he employs 120-200 *UNION* workers per film, but if a film costs $20M to produce and only brings in $1M at the box office, that is a net loss for the investors (and the production company) of $19M - this is a massive hit to the economy that more than offsets the *SHORT* *TERM* employment boost of the production process.

Who gives a shit that some shitty director is making shitty movie versions of videogames that were going to be awful anyway?

Making this Boll guy retire won’t solve anything. Shitty movies will continue to be made. It’s not like House of the Dead was going to be turned over to Martin Scorscese if Uwe Boll quit. It would just go to the next cheap hack down the list.

The war on bad movies is like the war on drugs. Taking out the suppliers doesn’t work. Suppliers will be replaced. You have to eliminate the DEMAND.

So how’s this for a solution to horrible videogame adaptation movies that are such a bane of all of your lives:

Every one of the 1,000,000 people who sign the silly Uwe Boll petition goes and kills himself.

There! Now nobody on Earth even WANTS to see a Bloodrayne or a Postal movie and they never get made!

    Problem solved!

Andrew: The Troma films *AIM* at being bad and are hillarious for it.

Uwe Boll doesn’t even have the sense to try for humor - his making of movies started as a scheme to make money. It’s not an “Art” to him, no matter what he says. When he started making the movies there was a small loophole in the German tax laws that meant it was *EASY* to make money by making a movie that was a complete flop. The loophole basically said “You write off the investment, lowering your tax burden, and only pay taxes on the profits.” ‘House of the Dead’ cost $22M to make and grossed $16M at the box office. ‘Alone in the Dark’ cost $32M to make and grossed $6M at the box office.

Calling people “Douches” because they think that a movie based on a video-game could be done as well as those based on comic-books (see ‘Spider Man’, ‘Superman Returns’, etc…) if given to a competent production company and director is idiotic. (and they’d be right - see “Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children”)

If they feel that one man is responsible for creating/upholding the stereotype that “A Movie Based on a Video Game Must Be Terrible” and have a chance to stop that man from continuing to perpetuate that myth, then they should seize that chance. Doing anything else would be stupid.

For someone who sports the name Doobie, you demand to be taken very seriously. If you feel sorry for this man, you should see what he has to say about the people who watch his movies. This is also a man who thinks it’s cool to hunt up people on the internet who think poorly of said movies and beat them up as if it proves his films are any better or makes him more professional.
This is someone who is not mature enough to take the high road when asked how many votes it would take to make him stop and instead offered a challenge. I say make him eat his words. He’s not going to stop anyway even if there are a million. That is just how he works. If he’s a big enough boy to do what he’s already done, than I don’t see the point in calling other people out for stepping up to his very large plate as well.

To those who tout creative expression in his defense: If a director made Western-themed movies so terrible that millions of people ceased to watch Western-themed movies altogether, cutting off the industry’s willingness to fund such movies, then isn’t it up to the fans of Westerns to oust him?

By sullying the genre, this director has participated in CURTAILING freedom of expression to the point that not even Microsoft can get a video-game movie made! This has to stop.

We’ll still have a lot to laugh and be upset about, Jack Thompson is a good example ;)

I work on Uwe Boll movies and though they may be shit, there are hundreds of hard working people who make their living working on his films and other projects in Vancouver. So if you don’t like his crappy films, nobody is making you watch them.

  120. Gravatar

And to anyone spitting out bullcrap figures like 32 million to make house of the dead… you are dead wrong! Far Cry was his biggest production to date and had a budget of 30 million which was cut down to 18 million, which is HUGE for an independent low-budget film.

And back in the old days, some critics would express their viewpoint by dueling and killing artists - this, at least, is a democratic process, and Boll opened himself up for it. Anyone who says ‘just let him make his movies’ or ‘he’s doing what he loves’ or ‘who is he hurting’ - bear in mind there’s a lot of signatures already that stand against him. And, more importantly, he opened himself to that. While I don’t suspect he’ll follow through on his promise, there are two important things about art. One of them is this: First is that art should not and cannot be censored. This has been observed. Second is that if an artist opens themselves up for criticism, they’d better be willing to take that criticism, because real critics don’t pull blows.

This isn’t a freedom of speech issue. It’s not an appeal to the state to legislate against the creation of appalling films, it’s a request that he desist. Perhaps without Uwe Boll we could have something better occupying the same space.

For John’s football player analogy, if the fans want to voice their displeasure at the performance of the manager and demand his retirement that’s fine. They’re not attempting to impinge upon his “right to express himself” throught the medium of football, but prevent him from activity they feel is damaging for the sport or the club.

Furthermore, a petition is a pretty potent means of (free) expression.

  131. Gravatar

Sad getting worked up over story and video games. just story and video games, take care of your own children and watch what they do on your own. instead of being worried about what your children do while your not taking care of them.

  132. Gravatar

I can admit that the fotball player analogy wasn’t the best one. The car manufacturer was much better, you have to give me that? ;)

Anyway, pointless discussion so I’m leaving with some good quotes from above, worth reading again:

“His movies aren’t great, but they’re far from the child pornography that someone saw fit to compare them to. (I think that probably counts as a Godwins Law varient)

You have no right to insist that an artist - even one as bad as Boll, stop creating their art. What will a million signatures prove?
    (…)
Could everyone here who signed the petition, please quit their jobs if the work that they do isn’t of extraordinary quality please?
It’s only fair that it should run both ways.”

  143. Gravatar

‘Bill’: Uwe Boll is a movie director, not a game maker. Postal, Bloodrayne, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead were all games that I had a lot of fun playing. (Hell, Alone in the Dark is one of my favorite games of all time) Uwe Boll turned them into shitty movies.

Xile: As I pointed out to someone else - I have yet to pay to see any Uwe Boll movies. I’ve seen bits and pieces of a couple of them, and I tried watching “House of the Dead”. But despite losing the “tax law ‘loophole’” that let him make money *DESPITE* his films never making money he has continued to make bad movies. He hasn’t gotten the hint that he shouldn’t be making movies by people not going to see them - so I’m hoping this petition shows him the truth.

Koko Kid: In 2005, prior to the closing of the German Tax Law Loophole that was giving him a way to make money despite a movie losing massive amounts of money (Alone in the Dark lost something like $26 million (US) dollars), he was in talks with Eidos for rights to ‘Hitman’. I’m not sure he could have done worse with the property than the people that eventually got it, but I think he could have.

John Anderson: Look at how much money he’s lost on his films to date. The number is staggering - somewhere over $50 million US. That is the result of people *NOT* *WATCHING* his movies. Has this stopped him? And people do run petitions for all your “it’d be even worse” examples - if they don’t, it’s a website against the person. Anyway… you are using a straw-man argument and not even a very good one.

I met Uwe once at a screening of “Postal” and he’s a smart, passionate guy who really loves what he does. Yes, he made “House of the Dead” and I am stilll unhappy that I will never get that 90 minutes of my life back. But if the man is resourceful enough to get the resources together to make crappy films, who am I to tell him to stop?

If there’s one thing that’s clear from this whole petition stunt, it’s that Uwe listens to his fans. And occasionaly boxes them senseless.

  149. Gravatar

We don´t care if he makes bad movies or not, the problem is that he ruins entirely the possibility of good movies with those franchises.

when i first heard that they were making an Alone in the dark movie i waited biting my nails to see it. But when i finally saw it. damn, i died a little that day.

he can continue to make movies, i don´t care, just don´t ruin good franchises.

anyway, the petition got my vote. farewell Mr. Boll.

I do feel for the guy in some way.

I mean, he obviously sucks as what he does. But at least he’s spending his time sucking at doing what he loves, huh?

It’s just that it’s only a matter of time before a really, really beloved video game falls into his hands and he makes a mess of it.

I mean, how many more Hitmans can we really handle?

Yeah, he’s not the only rubbish director out there. But he is the richest out of all of them, and he has the resources to do almost any project he wants.

Okay, so I couldn’t make it through all the comments, but a few posts up, Wh173 finally hit the nail on the head.

I could care less if he wants to make movies. I could care less if he wants to make *bad* movies. What I *do* care about is that he continues to 1) Kill viable movie franchises from video games. Spiderman, X-men and the upcoming Iron-man show that comics can translate to the big screen. There’s no reason to think that video games can’t do so as well. But as long as Uwe keeps turning every video game franchise into total crap, we will never know. And he has done such an extensive job of this, that he, personally, has 2) Turned the mainline movie establishment against making video game movies.

The fact that one man has done so much damage to a sub-genre that I love is sufficient reason for me to sign.

And although it will likely mean nothing in the end, I defend my reasons behind doing so. His one-man destruction of an entire sub-genre of movies needs to be stopped.
