The good, and potentially great, news? This is just crazy, let me catch my breath. One of the best actors working today, Daniel Day-Lewis, is in talks to follow-up his Oscar-winning role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood with yet another award-caliber epic. So, what’s the sort of off-putting (but not necessarily bad) news? If it pans out, Day-Lewis’s next film will belong to Hollywood’s current remake pantheon, though this one sounds more like a bold and careful “re-envisioning.”

Director Peter Weir (Master and Commander, The Last Wave) and Warner Bros. are fast-tracking an $80 million remake of Fitzcarraldo, Werner Herzog’s classic and quite deranged 1982 film about an ambitious man who strikes out, against all rationality, to construct an opera house deep in the Peruvian jungle. Day-Lewis will star as the aforementioned man, a role originally made famous by the German nut Klaus Kinski.

If your gut reaction is to decry a remake of Herzog’s film, that is understandable, but know that Herzog is on board to produce the remake. No word on how Weir will tackle-slash-update the original film’s infamous and signature scenes, in which a steamboat was gruelingly pulled up and over a steep hill by natives, but it’s being reported that this version will be set 50 or so years in the future. Guess that eliminates the steamboat. Mick Jagger, who was originally supposed to star in the ‘82 film, is said to be in talks to contribute to the remake’s score. Obviously, it’s unknown whether Day-Lewis would rock his intense ’stache, but The Hollywood Reporter reports that the main character is quite fond of a monocle, a futuristic monocle.

Discuss: Is Day-Lewis the monocled saviour of the modern remake? If it’s not a steamboat, might it be some type of flying contraption? Would you rather see Weir’s remake, or TWBB with Klaus Kinski as Plainview (a very living Kinski)?

It's been April Fools overkill on the Internet today so i don't know if this is a joke or not. I just want to curl up in a ball in the corner and wait for the day to end.
  • Alex
    happy april fools
  • Steve
Man I wish this was real :(
  • CinemaMaster
    @ Alex

Believe it or not, this isn't an April Fools prank like the Spiderman/Superman artiice. I heard about this project happening over the weekend and it's just hitting the trades. It's the real deal.

I agree with Chris, the April Fools Day reports on other sites are a big turnoff to readers.

i hope this isnt real.. daniel day lewis is awesome but he doesnt have the madness that kinski brought (because well..he was a maniac)
  • CinemaMaster
    @ tommy

    Believe it. It's happening.

I didn't know Herzog would be involved, that came as a big surprise, but my friend and I discussed Weir and Day-Lewis over lunch at the Ivy Saturday.

If I had to guess? This will be a classic film, better than Kinski's. Kinski was good, I agree Chris, but his mood swings actually hurt the film in parts. Day-Lewis is a consummate professional, he'll do a better job.

    April Fools!

But I just want to say that in case this is real I think Day-Lewis would kill in this role.

He is the greatest living actor right now. Seriously.
  • C
Please let this be an April Fools joke.

Daniel Day would never do this. No way. Out of respect for Kinski.

    Good one, Hunter.

And Kinski would have rocked as Plainview. Just pull up some clips of him from youtube and watch in awe at the depths of his rage. Or watch some of the films he made with Herzog.
  • CinemaMaster
    @ The Jezzus

It's not. Weir has floated this script around town for months. This is funny. For the last time, Peter Weir and DDL are really doing Fitzcarraldo.
  • Vicinus
Is Kinski so well known in America? Or are just so many germany, like me, writing here?
  • The Jezzus
It's fake, how come the only other source leads to a "Stuff White People Like" blog? I need sources. Not just speculation.

Plus a futuristic Fitz? Come on...

Kinski is the man though, I don't speak a word of German.

    @CinemaMaster

If it's real, then why doesn't The Hollywood Reporter article cited in the post exist? The idea of remaking Fitzcarraldo as 50 years in the future is just too bizarre to consider. What's the point?
  • CinemaMaster
    @ Reg

Gohd, you clearly don't live in L.A. or work in the business, otherwise you wouldn't second guess it.

The Hollywood Reporter is probably holding the article until later today.

It's only bizarre for those who lack the vision of Weir and DDL. If one can successfully set Shakespeare in the world of urban school basketball and the projects, a remake of Fitzcarraldo can transcend the heavens, as I and so many others working here in L.A. have heard.

Don't be a lemon wedge gone bad in this glass of uplifting news!
  • JFK
Does not need to be remade. Use The DDL for original material only...
  • Fred
How many april fool's are you guys going to post for christ sake's?
  • Reg
    @Cinema

Thanks for the condescension pal. My point was this: the original post says "The Hollywood Reporter reports...". So whether the Reporter is holding the story or not (which I'll admit is plausible), how could the /film post cite an article that doesn't yet exist as proof of the story's veracity?

I rest my case. You don't need to live in LA to spot bullsh@t when you see it.
  • REAL6
Don't get me wrong, Daniel-Day is a dope actor, but he's not touching Klaus Kinski or coming close. STOP WITH THE GOD DAMN REMAKES!!!
  • Not Jesus
I thought by the title that this was Daniet-Day Lewis doing a remake of Breakin 2 Electric Boogaloo. Darn :(
  • Arthur
Wait is this for real? I hope it is, even if it is set in the future (which sort of makes it sound fake) but Daniel Day Lewis playing Kinski's part sound great and Peter Weir is a great director. I'm about 50/50 if this a real project but I would be glad if it's made.
  • I'm a HUGE K2 fan but have to admit FITZ isn't one of my favorites. Yeah, it has some moments of greatness but they're too few and far between for my taste. The mind reels at the idea of FITZCARRALDO 2060 but so much s**t gets announced and thrown out there these days that never happens (like, sadly, HOUSE OF RE-ANIMATOR) that I'm not holding my breath.
