In light of the recent coverage of director Steven Brill’s e-mail replies to Star Wars fanboys, I thought it might be time to finally share a story I’ve been sitting on this since August. When the first Drillbit Taylor movie trailer was released, I was highly critical of the preview for being unfunny, and sarcastically referred to director Steven Brill as “the ‘genius’ behind Little Nicky”. And then one night, about a month later, I received this angry e-mail from Steven Brill (note: I have censored one of the words to make it safe for work):
—-
you are a bitter f**k and you deserve all the unhappiness and frustration that I know you feel.
Peace
the genius behind Little Nicky
—-
I laughed out loud when I got this e-mail. And to be fair, Brill later apologized, and is as it turns out, he is really nice guy. Just don’t insult his past, present or future work.

Wow. Steven Brill needs to chill.
March 26th, 2008 at 9:30 pm
Well isn’t he chipper?
March 26th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
Rule number one: If you can’t take criticism well or put up with crazy fanboys…don’t read the blogs. Rule number two: Just because you can email someone who runs a website doesn’t necessarily mean that you should. That said, there’s crappier films out there than Brill’s, even if I haven’t like any of his.

Yeah, there’s worse movies. I’m not a huge fan of his work either. I guess its the material? I’m not sure. The Adam Sandler/mainstream comedy flicks are not my thing, so who am I to criticize.
March 26th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
I honestly think this whole thing’s hilarious. He’s a TAD touchy, isn’t he? When you’re putting something out for the public eye, you have to expect criticism, constructive or otherwise.
Well…Peter DID say he was a nice guy, after all. To me, he sounds like the John McEnroe of the directing world.

Who here would watch a movie about Stephen Brill?? Let the bidding war for Asshole: The Steve Brill story begin. Stiller could probably play him (in Dodgeball, Heavyweights mode).

If you’re going to get butthurt about anything and everything negative, you’re in the wrong business, Brill.
March 26th, 2008 at 10:15 pm
Yeah, that was immature. But he apologized. A fact I think many folks are going to ignore…
March 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
Honestly, if I had received this from P.T.Anderson, a Coen, Mr Scorcesse or someone of that calibre - i’d be hurt.
Steven Brill on the other hand is a non-film maker who makes non-films. (If he’d be prepared to fly me to the U.S I’d be more than happy to say that to his face too.)
This arrogance is utterly bizarre.
March 26th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
How are you any better busting this out now, months later?
March 26th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Big John: With all the funny Fanboy email responses, it seemed more relevant now than ever.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
don’t insult his work…or don’t forget that he’s 45 and says shit like “u r a tough guy” via film web blog.
honestly, little nicky and the majority of this clown’s movies sucked serious ballioz, but the fact that this mother fucker finds it necessary to personally send everyone emails about how he thinks “ur a bitter fuck” when fiscally, he CLEARLY has it better off than the most of us, really…REALLY makes me laugh.
here’s to you, steven brill. I love you.
March 26th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
What a fuckin’ pusbag. No wonder his fuckin’ movies suck, he can’t even write in grown up english…
March 27th, 2008 at 12:27 am
Little Nicky was hysterical.
March 27th, 2008 at 1:06 am
Maybe we should change his name to Steve-O.
This guy needs to learn how the internet works.
@Ciji
If I say I’m going to do something horrible and violent to the president, and then later apologize, I’m still likely rotting in Guantanamo.

Steven Brill- This country’s answer to Uwe Boll!
March 27th, 2008 at 6:18 am
Hey I actually liked Little Nicky! I’m gonna look up his work on IMDB, I kinda feel bad now.
And Peter, is it really cool to post an email a guy sent to you? I mean, he meant it to go to you right? Not us?
March 27th, 2008 at 6:21 am
Whoops, this is the guy responsible for “Heavy Weights” and “D3: Mighty Ducks”… Sorry I ever doubted you, Peter.
You have my full support in poking harmless fun at this guy.
March 27th, 2008 at 6:56 am
well, you are sort of a prick yourself for deleting all my comments that I’ve ever posted here…but I keep coming back because I’m a prick as well.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:17 am
You really are a bitter f### peter.
March 27th, 2008 at 7:48 am
this guy is pathetic especially in the last post where he’s ripping on them for talking shit over the internet lol kinda like he’s doing too!? Big words for an overweight 50 year old
March 27th, 2008 at 7:49 am
I’ve learned to take criticisms with a dash of salt. Sure, it may hurt. But always look at it, pull form it what you can to improve yourself and your product (if that be a film or something else). Words hurt, but you should just strive to improve yourself and out shine a critic.
March 27th, 2008 at 8:07 am
Personally, I’d like to thank the man behind Heavy Weights.
I loved that movie, but I was also thirteen and way into the teen fat camp genre.

Was the character from Little Nicky based off of his face?
March 27th, 2008 at 9:13 am
All you motherfuckers are gonna pay. You are the ones who are the ball-lickers. We’re gonna fuck your mothers while you watch and cry like little bitches. Once we get to Hollywood and find those Weinstein Co. fucks who are making that movie, we’re gonna make ‘em eat our shit, then shit out our shit, then eat their shit which is made up of our shit that we made ‘em eat. Then you’re all you motherfucks are next. Love, Jay and Silent Bob.

I think him and Owe Boll should get together and go bowling. Not because Brill’s films are anywhere near as awful as Boll’s (a few of them I quite enjoyed), but because they have the same hilarious reactionary tendencies to anyone who doesn’t bow down before them.
March 27th, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Once again, this makes me love Steven Brill even more. I think it’s great that he calls out obnoxious snarkiness in a completely immature, but truly hilarious and petty fashion. And unlike the people who go out of there way to rip him, he seems to be having a fun time, making movies that people enjoy. He’s not calling himself an artist. I’ll save my bitterness bitterness for the people who made Crash and Atonement.
Check out his cameo in Mr. Deeds.
