I dunno, Peter, maybe we've been visiting different boards or something ;-)

Whatever the fact about the initial internet reaction, I think it's evident that the film is garnering more and more positive anticipation as time goes on. It even bookended Jonathan Ross's 'Film 2008' series above all the other Summer releases (Indy, Batman, etc). 'Empire Online' has it as the third most anticipated film of the year, trailing only Indy IV and the new Bond film.

Most of the negativity I've seen seems to be stemming from a residual resentment of the Wachowskis after failing to deliver them satisfying follow-ups to The Matrix. Which is a shame, because I think this movie could really end up being something special.

Hey, even you've started coming round to the idea of a truly unique cinematic experience, right? Who knows...it may end up being the next Toy Story :-D

Yes, I hate to admit it, at first I was annoyed that they should adapt Speed Racer in the first place. Then first trailers came out, and though exciting showed very little in significant content. But it makes me wish I was a kid again. I mean these posters, the trailer are very exciting, even for an adult like myself. The Wachowski's have a certain style and flair that captures your attention and compels you to want more. Even if its' targeted for youth, I'm going to see it in IMAX. w00t w00t

Manfred, I surveyed message boards, comment sections of other blogs, and the response on /Film, and the amount of positive response to the original trailer was about 1 out of 5. Those 1 out of 5 were very local making a lot of posts/comments trying to defend the film.

It should also be noted that the only early screening report (that I've seen at leat) seems to be a studio leak. At least that is the concusses. I wouldn't trust it completely.

I'm afraid you're mistaken, Peter.

Most of the internet did not dislike the first trailers. Rather, it was a case of the Marmite Syndrome - you either loved it or you hated it. There was very little in between, and the internet seemed split pretty squarely at 50-50 down the middle.

However, as more and more promotional material was released, it seems that sentiment is becoming more and more positive. I'd say that the ratio of positive to negative feeling about the film has reached an average of about 70-30.

And that's a conservative estimate.

Personally, I think the posters look fantastic. They do what posters are supposed to do - excite you about the film and give you a sense of the style involved. And that style is camp. "Cheesy", if you will. Which is the whole point.

Early screenings apparently suggest that the film is absolutely riveting, and given the huge audience appeal across genders and across the ages (Indy 4's marketing will only really appeal to over-25s, and Iron Man will no doubt exclude its female audience), Speed Racer has the potential to be the biggest blockbuster of the Summer.

Perhaps even the year.

"What Character Posters don't look Cheesy?" Oh, I don't know... The ones that The Wachowski Brothers released for The Matrix Reloaded for starters.
