To anonymous - I understand what you’re saying about distractions to the theater experience, but I’ve got to tell you, there is nowhere in the world I’d rather see a film than at the Alamo. Unlike in most theaters, the patrons at the Alamo represent the most respectful and educated moviegoing audience in the country. I recently attended a Kurosawa retrospective at Lincoln Center and was more bothered by the person in the row behind me who was always asking what was going on than I have ever been at the Alamo. It is a truly unique experience. No matter what else goes on, the owners, managers, and staff respect the viewing experience above all else. If someone in the theater is causing a distraction for anyone, they will be removed without warning, and without refund. If you haven’t been there, then you have no idea what you’re missing.

As an Alamonian, I must say that the Alamo BOUNCES the fudge outta people who talk and are distractions during the movie. If you’re worried about a raucous crowd during No Country For Old Men…you’ve got nothing to sweat about. Even in a theater full of people eating and drinking, you could hear a pin drop. That has something to do with the fact the Alamo plays the movies LOUD and BRIGHT enough…unlike the crappy sound and dim-bulbs (literally and figuratively at chain theaters)

And the Alamo will probably NEVER work outside of Austin…sorry guys. You have to come visit…just don’t move here.

That has got to be the best theater I’ve ever seen. Theaters these days blow and they are so god damn expensive. I find it funny how this Alamo Drafthouse has a CHEAPER admission price, and is at least 1000x better than any other theater.

I would GLADLY pay to see a film, and eat there. It would be an ENJOYABLE experience. I think that is extremely important when it comes to theaters…And today’s theaters just don’t provide that. They provide a bunch of stupid kids with cellphones, over-priced food, over-priced admission, and just an overall lousy atmosphere.

I wish all theaters were Alamo Drafthouses. I REALLY hope they build one out here one day.

I live in Austin and this is the best place to see a movie hands down! We saw “Beerfest” there and they sold Spaten in the authentic glass mugs shown throughout the movie. They also had a beer tasting contest a brat eating contest and played beer trivia for prizes.

They also do on sight movies. One example is a showing of Jaws at Auditorium Shores in the water with the blow up screen floating in inner tubes. Another one was Big Lebowski night at the local bowling alley. The rented the place out and you get to bowl and drink white Russians while watching the Big Lebowski.

Studio Movie Grill in Dallas copied Alamo but they blow. It might as well be a regular movie theater with food.

Oh, and really really cool… when UT went to the Rose Bowl, the Alamo offered up free seats first come first serve… best blasted football game I’ve seen in all my forty years!

Dude, you guys missed the best no talking PSA… former Gov. Ann Richards (may she rest in peace) threatening to kick your ass if you talk during the show.
I miss the Alamo on Lamar something awful! Houston got an Alamo a few years ago, but we need more! We have a copy-cat here, but the feel isn’t the same and they let the kiddies be dropped off for a bit of movie baby-sitting…
COME ONE ALAMO! Expand in Houston!

ed: They have a new downtown location, in the old Ritz Theater. It was completely redone — seats, screen, sound system, etc. are all brand new, and very nice.

I’ve never had bad service at any of the locations. Though I do find that the food itself can be hit or miss.

it’s been more than 5 years since i left austin, but the people and community are the best things about it. the seats (cushion deflated by too many butts over the years) & service (worse than just being “laidback”) OTOH, were very run-down and far from comfortable.

Oh, and two nights ago I was at the Alamo Drafthouse for a St. Patrick’s Day screening of “Miller’s Crossing” with feast (the food and wine were actually quite good), and after the movie was over STEVE FREAKING BUSCEMI made a surprise appearance. I actually cried. And hugged him in lobby later.

I might marry the Drafthouse, if it were legal, based on that alone.
